He was a composer. He wrote music for symphonies. His music is some of the most complicated amazing stuff ever. He only picked up a guitar at 18; he was drumming before that. He played piano and bass too but not on most records.

He smokes prince; no question. A better writer, producer, guitar player.

But Prince is about 10 times the songwriter Zappa was.

And I've always contested classic connections giving someone the greencard when it comes to composing abilities. Prince made music relative to his context. Just because he didn't compose for symphonies doesn't mean he has musically inferior mind.

no way.

I am a music fan; not a fantic of anyone(not saying that you are, o.k) I own every prince album and nearly every zappa album. Zappa and prince are my fav artists.

Yes way imo. Prince has written pop culture classics. I reckon at least 10 Prince songs are automatically identifiable by the public at large. I don't think you can say the same about Frank Zappa. Not that that addresses quality of writing but I think that's a mark of greatness nonetheless. Zappa lacked Prince's simplicity and pop sensibility imo, whereas Prince can almost match him on complexity.
Baby, that was much too fast... 1958-2016

FZ was easily capable of writing great pop songs. Who cares about the public? This world is full of mindless sheep. Those that differ are truly unique.
listen to cheap thrills, trouble every day, anyway the wind blows, joes' garage, VALLEY GIRL + many more

Look on youtube; there's so much zappa stuff. Immensely articulated interviews and esquite songs and solos.

yeah that doesn't mean he's not great though.

Reading music is more essential if your playing other people's music

I'm sure he knows about chords, scales and such

I heard that he's dyslectic.
Whenever he reads braille,
his hand always goes the other way.

Fantastic Producer, Arranger, Trumpet player, not the WHOLE package, if you ask me. Prince could wipe the floor with him in many other areas, no disrespect to a Legend.

Music is not Olympics. Music is sound, melody, chords, rhythm, and is about one`s need to deliver feelings and emotions. Wether you do that for your very own entertainment, or to bring joy to others is something else. But basically that`s what i think music is all about. Expression. Turn your inside out.
Obviously a lot of people who like the music by Prince do not really understand that they already share with Prince what seems to be the most important thing which is i believe the
love
for music.
Olympics is : who runs the fastest, who jumps the highest and so on. Sportsworld is a very fascinating world. But again, sport isn`t all about being the best in a certain category.
Prince is very unique, you can hear the influences, yet he created his very own personal sound, he plays his own shit! And.....
It ain`t over.

I AGREE.....IT AIN'T OVER!!

Prince was more recognized because he played up his sexiness to the women and created this "Player" persona with men. Zappa didn't have much in the looks department so there was no major media market ie. videos to tap into so he could reach millions of people and create a large fanbase to work from.

Look at Christopher Cross. Before MTV this guy was all over the charts but they couldn't market him to the fickle MTV market even early on & his career went into the toilet. As talented as Prince is he owes a great deal to MTV for exposure.

not the greatest at anything specifically, yet the greatest combination of talents, the most versitile probably. he ranks very high across the board in most catagories where people like dylan, wonder and JB only rank highly in a few.how many artist are revered in funk circles, as a balladeer/sex icon and killer guitarist (more recently) it's actually amazing. can a guitar god funk? can a funk god seduce? can a balladeer write lets go crazy?. if he aint the best i dont want to try to wrap my mind around who is.

I agree with this. It's really the incredible variety of thinggs he can do well and how he puts it together to create incredible music.

I would like to hear the responses to this question on a general music forum. Since this is a Prince fan forum, many will agree, other suggestions will be shot down as ridiculous.

Music has an incredibly long and rich history, with scores of incredible musicians.

Prince is very near the top and I'm not saying he isn't at the top (considering that there really can be no proven greatest musician since part of the answer is necessarily subjective), but there are many others who deserve high praise.

Is they really true? I have some comic book that says that, but what is the source for that "factoid"?

Even if it is so what takes more musical ability? To be able to play well by ear or to read sheet music?

I know his movies are not real, but in cherry moon Mary makes fun of Chris for misspelling "PARADE." Chris says "I think I have that condition (dyslexia?)" and marry calls it "stupid." Might prince have it in real life? That would explain issues with reading music. I have always heard that people with dyslexia are often creative thinkers.
