He's certainly in the top tier of brilliant musicians. As far as rock 'n' roll goes, I think Stevie Wonder is his only legitimate competition.

It is a pretty broad statement. I would generally agree, but I don't know everything about music. He can play tons of instruments at a high level, produce/compose all different genres of music with great ability, write great lyrics at times, and sing very well.

Who do people think is his competition in this aspect? Someone mentioned Stevie Wonder which seems possible. Who else? Who can do what Prince does at his level or better? Would James Brown be one?

I think Prince's true competitors lie in the realms of jazz. The Coltranes, Parkers, Ellingtons etc. That's when it gets tough.

not the greatest at anything specifically, yet the greatest combination of talents, the most versitile probably. he ranks very high across the board in most catagories where people like dylan, wonder and JB only rank highly in a few.how many artist are revered in funk circles, as a balladeer/sex icon and killer guitarist (more recently) it's actually amazing. can a guitar god funk? can a funk god seduce? can a balladeer write lets go crazy?. if he aint the best i dont want to try to wrap my mind around who is.

Now I am going to get hated on for this response, but if you are saying he is the greatest musician ever, you have got to be on crack. Now mind you he is a great musician. He is also perhaps the best songwriter ever, But musician, you must be 3 sandwiches short of a picnic. Even P would admit he is not the best musician ever. Lets take it on some of his most well known instruments that he plays. Start with drums. Prince hired John Blackwell who is a far superior drummer skills wise. P is dope, but he is no Blackwell. I can name many better drummers. Art Blakey, Dennis Chambers, Dave Ghirabaldi. Bass - His Idol is Larry Graham. He is not better than Larry. P is funky as hell, but no Larry. Technically he could not fuck with Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, or Marcus Miller. Guitar - P's best in my opinion. One of the most under heralded guitarists ever. Technically sound, plus has great sould. He is in my top 5 for sure. But he could never even light a candle to Jimmy Hendix ass. He is nowhere near the level of Craig Wah Wah Watson. Stevie Ray vaughn would woop his ass, and the guy whos name I cannot recall right now but he played the solo on the Parliament Song Maggot Brain is so much better than P its ridiculous. So is he the best entertainer, songwriter yes. Musician. Hell to fucking NO!

yes but you are breaking it down into individual instruments...but is he the greatest ALL ROUND musician alive today ???....i believe he is...everybody who has worked with him and i am including jazz musicians here , says he can nail anything he plays....he is a brilliant guitar and bass player..
.in the top ten in the world for me....he is a wonderful keyboard player and an excellent drummer....if you add his songwriting and live performances...there is noone who can touch him in the music world in my opinion....if anyone can come up with someone else who can come close then i would like to hear it

But then you need to remember people like Sananda Matreya (The former terrance trent darby) or believe it or not Raphael Saadiq. Not to mention Stevie Wonder who play various instruments at a very skillful level. PRince is the best performer of the aforementioned. But these guys are also great all round musicians.
