So Prince is a Rock artist?

I was just at allmusic.com and noticed they categorized Prince as a Rock artist.

What do y'all think his main genre of music is?
PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever

That's one of the perplexing things about Prince. When somebody asks me what genre he fits in, I can only say "Either Rock, Funk, or R&B - he's all over the spectrum."

When it comes to genres I always say he's ambidextrous (spelling?) R&B, Soul, Rock, Alternative, Gospel, Jazz, Techno, Funk, Dance, Pop,but most FUSION!!! He's outside the box and he often stands on top of it.

I consider Prince a rock artist. And in all the music stores in my town, that's where his CDs are stocked at.

If you wanna get literal, Prince is the essence of funk in heels, but the stores don't have a funk section. LOL.

Most stores don't have funk sections, just R&B sections.

It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

But rap = rock 'n' roll

R n' B or 'race music' -> rock 'n' roll (the name given to race music by alan freed in the 50s to make it more appealing to the masses).

Then R n' B + gospel = soul (enter James Brown) -> funk -> hip hop/rap.

I hold the unpopular view that rap is more rock 'n' roll than metal or progressive rock. It can be traced back to rock's roots in far fewer steps than that which is classified as rock today - basically white guys with guitars. smile

So Prince is most definitely a rock artist.

The majority I pick up is Rock/R&B/Funk

Well, FYE puts his stuff under R&B instead of Pop/Rock (where I get most of my CD's). And I gotta go with them. But he does do quite a bit of Rock... I still wouldn't characterize as a rock artist cuz he's not nearly into that as... say, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith... both of which I really don't get into.
