Your favourite "obscure" Prince album What is your favourite "obscure" Prince album? I mean, those albums that were only released on the internet, or as released on a limited level?
The choices: 1. The undertaker (rock) 2. The Truth (acoustic / guitar) 3. Kamasutra (classical / instrumental) 4. The Slaughterhouse (dance / funk) 5. The Chocolate invasion (dance / funk) 6. Xpectation (jazz / instrumental) 7. C-Note (jazz / instrumental) 8. One nite alone: piano and vocals (acoustic / piano) My pick would be One Nite Alone: surprisingly subdued but often beautifull melodies, and Prince has improved as a piano-player a lot. In the eighties i did often find him too 'flashy' / to 'Vegas'. On One Nite Alone his playing is more subtle, and it touches me more on an emotional level. Second would be The Truth, nice to hear his acoustic guitar playing, but there are some weaker songs on this album (Dione, Man in a Uniform, Fascination) that weigh it down. | |

Excellent thread, well done. Unfortunately I have only heard half of these releases, but I will give the nod to One Night Alone as well. Beautiful melodies, best left uncluttered. I wish the Truth was more pure in it's delivery.
Have only heard bits and pieces of Expectation and the Madhouse records, but these sound enticing. But I guess I am a thru and thru Prince fan, as I quite enjoy some elements of Kamasutra once in a while as well merf | |

I havent heard Xpectation or C-note myselve, but judging on the 'reviews' here those albums show some very good musicianship by the involved musicians, but the compositions itselve are not very spectacular. That has kept me from looking for those 2 albums for so far.
When it comes to The Slaughterhouse and The chocolate invasion: i have just recently downloaded those 2 albums, and i much say, they confirm while i gave up my interest up in Prince for quite some years (well...1996 to 2004 to be honest): very generic, unspired dance / funk with weak compositions. When it comes to the Madhouse albums i must say i have not yet heared '24' (which i think was never officially released). '16' was a bit of a let down for me, a lot of the songs on that album are minimalistic instrumental funk-jams. Quite boring and monotic. '8' on the other hand is a little gem IMO, some jazz-critics have talked it down (not very interesting coctail jazz) but IMO Prince and the band find a nice balance on the album between really jazzy efforts, more straightforward funky songs and ballads. Princes piano playing is sometimes very impressing. And the drummer (not sure about his name) shows some great skills too. My personal favourite of that album is the 10-minute closing track '8' which slowly builts up to an instrumental climax. Alltough it features Eric Leeds prominently on flute and saxophone, the song also reminds me of the colourfull, psychedelic pop on Around the world in a day (Condition of the heart, especially). | |

It's gotta be ONA - if only for "A Case of U" which gives me the shivers everytime!
The whole delivery of this album is amazing at a time when I was questioning where his music was going. No child is bad from the beginning. They only imitate their atmosphere. | |

I agree, one of his best cover versions: Case of You that is.
He spoiled I cant make you love me, with adding a 'sex verse', and his version of One of us, is just plain awfull (it shows why Prince NEVER should have said: i can simply play the music of The Joshua Tree from U2: because he is damn wrong, technically he could, but when it comes to feeling and timing he could never been succesfull with that kind of material) But when it comes to A case of you, its a 'hit': I mean, he doesnt 'overdo' it, keeps it simple and subtle, subdued. A really nice effort. | |

It's crap! true, half the song is missing - doesn't mean what he did with the other half is "crap". Unless there is another reason why you deem it so poor? No child is bad from the beginning.
