In the case of You Tube, although I agree mostly with the original post, a profit is being made by a party other than Prince and Universal by having their product on there. I think in the days since Napster, we have become desensitized by the idea of "sharing" music. Music is a product like any other, you pay for it and the producer of the product, in turn gets paid. Like it or not, the companies and the federal government consider "sharing", stealing. For the record, it is.
Now, Housequake had the perfect arrangement. No-one was profiting from the work and they agreed to only post items that were not commercially available. In some cases, this would work towards defeating bootleggers as there was no need or desire to purchase their product. Shutting that down...that was just excessive on Prince and Universal's part.

Thank you ....

1. People always want something for nothing. Copyright infringment is a big deal .The technology evolved faster than the industry did but filesharing has destroyed music as we know it .At least most Prince fans will go and buy the CD, but the extended mixes and B-sides are things of the past because releasing music in that format would be just like giving it away.

2. Agreed ,however I think that has more to do with Prince wanting to do things through his own sites verses another site. I wish that he would contract with the ORG or HQ to do some of those things that he wanted to do.

Filesharing hasnt' destroyed music. It's destroyed the status quo of the music industry. I've got no problem with that. The town blacksmith used to do big business a few hundred years ago, but nobody's pissing and moaning today over the demise of his "industry."

As with all things Prince has objected to:

It's about control.

The way it's shown, treated, etc

It is really quite unfortunate. All that money u can't take it with u. Let see money vs. pleasure. I suppose I would personally rather that no one was denied the pleasure of my music and that perhaps on any given bad day My music may have put a smile on someones face. At our age all that glitters is no longer really gold.

Not for long. I got warned on Veoh too. I only had about 4 videos on there. I just got disgusted and deleted everything.

So I guess from now on, my videos are my own...unless someone finds me on a p2p.

lol yeah discovered that too recently!

You know what, if Prince released all the stuff that's on the web officially on his site and charged a few dollars for it, he'd make a killing from the people on here and HQ alone!

If Prince did just that ,how much bullshit flack would he catch from his fanbase ?

"It's too high!"
"It's about the music so it should be free."
"It's not as good as the Wendy and Lisa days."
"This video is not as good as (fill in the blank)."

So to avoid criticism from a few of his fans, the answer is just to not release or allow anything to be released at all? Um no. The overwhelming majority of his fans would pay for rare gems. For example I would love to see the entire Sign O the Times Tour (not the edited released version). I would love to see the Diamonds and Pearls Tour. Heck, I would have loved to have seen the Musicology Tour on DVD. Many times Prince is just out of touch with his fans, and it has gotten old for a lot of them, including me.

Besides, of course Prince can't please everyone, but some of the things his fans complain about are indeed legitimate. The sound on the "One Night Alone" DVD WAS screwy, not to mention it wasn't the entire show. The complaints about issues with the music club were legitimate. His alienating those who actually put money in his pocket is indeed something to get pissed about from time to time.

Prince goes overboard, and the Housequake and even the Youtube thing is ridiculous.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.
