Dudes, those are not flip flops, those are a pair of "tabis" ( spelling ?) , Japanese sandals, you know ?
They are supposed to be worn like that, with those white socks. Now, I ´m not a 100% sure about the name, since "tabis" can also be those shoes that the Ninjas used to wear ( with that split thing between the toes) but Prince is definitely wearing them correctly and is not breaking the flip flop etiquette. That picture with the real flip flops and socks looks stupid though. And no , it is not fashionable to wear socks with flip flops, neither in Europe, nor anywhere else. Remember that line from 3121 "...take your pick from the Japanese robes and sandals..." They are Japanese "sandals", not flip flops. Like the stuff that Geishas wear. It’s a huge fashion faux-pa in most country’s unless if it is worn in country’s traditional attire. In Europe when on holiday u will see loads of men walking around wearing flip-flops or sandels carrying towels this is why many laugh. . . [Edited 6/19/07 5:01am] | |

this is the THIRD time i've seen him rocking the flip/flop sock combo.
the first time was that pic of him reading a book in the back of a limo, where he's wearing all-white. the second time was when i saw his aftershow on the musicology tour in chicago - he was wearing some hong-kong phooey outfit with flip-flops and socks. 
apparently, it's a look he REALLY LIKES. | |
