Planet Earth and the public

On Youtube, people have been commenting on the new Prince song "Guitar."

It seems in the past 2-3 years, people's perceptions on Prince are changing.

There are many comments about the song being "great," "sick," "beastly," "his best song ever," etc.

However, as everything Prince does, his hardcore fans either hate or love it.

Objectively, you've got to admit that his career resurrection is quite good. Back in 2001 when "The Rainbow Children" came out, it sold what, 70,000 copies and nobody but us hardcore fans cared. Ever since 2004, he's been a lot more respected. Sold out concerts, 2 hit albums. It's pretty impressive for someone who changed their name to a symbol and was irrelevant to most during 1994-2003.

A fan since '91... got D&P CD at the Supermarket smile
thought the 0(+> album rocked
was blown away by the Hits/B Sides
listened to the bootlegs of Come/Gold sessions religiously

And Prince is still selling out arenas and releasing new albums. Thumbs up, man!

Also consider he has sold 400,000 concert tickets in the UK and sold over 140,000 tickets in 20 minutes for the first dates announced.

All 15 dates were sold-out in a matter of hours.

Concert-wise he was not this popular at his European-peak in 1992-3. Actually, Prince is more popular in the UK now concert-wise, than he has perhaps ever been.

It is incredible, but well-deserved.

But how? The US had the huge Musicology tour, followed by a solid 3121 album. What made the UK public want to see Prince again? Was the Super Bowl that incredible?

Yeah, but back then he was touring Europe almost every year -
1986,87,88,90,92,93,95,98...

He hasn't done a solid tour there since 2002, and even that was a small theatre tour. I think people are worried if they don't see him now, they might have to wait another 5 years!

Anyway, back to the topic:

Prince's "resurection" really started with The Rainbow Children album I think, and has steadily improved since then. Regardless of what some may think of the lyrics, musically it got away from the 'plastic' sound he had been using in the late 1990s and he finally got a great band up and running again (his best since the 1993-95 NPG). Since then, it's all been up hill (in terms of his popularity/status).

The Love4oneanother and Jam Of The Year tours never made it to Europe... only the New Power Soul tour in 1998 (but all three were essentially the same tour, musically).

Well, he toured Europe in 2002 with the One Nite Alone tour... But he didn't play Brixton. He played 3 shows at Carling Hammersmith Apollo in London, an aftershow at The New Marquee, and 2 shows in Manchester. I don't think he's played Brixton since 1998.

I would like for more people (not just us) to take him more seriously.

"has-been" has come to mind... and people who knew of him in the past think of him as weird... and they still probably think that (and they've had kids who have developed that same bias)... but I think a fear of his "weirdness" will always be there... so why did I bother?

I hope that Planet Earth pans out for him, not just among the public, but among us as well.
I listened to 3121 yesterday (I had little other choices cuz my mom & sister were my company in the car) and I saw the unique taste I had for its lyrics and modern music. It's a good chance of pace, newer sounding than Musicology... but I like its vibe of maturity & sophistication. Kinda reminds u how old Prince is and how far he's come.

So 3121 isn't a total loss... but I hope that Planet Earth is perceived better than 3121 was... meaning that more people here like it than hate it.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I was just thinking that the other day. He has evolved into arguably the

greatest live act in the world. I'm not in the biggest Prince market by any

means; but I saw him on the Lovesexy tour and he didn't sell out the arena.
