I love the Rave album, and the remix version.

Rave album shits all over The Rainbow Children, Chaos & Disorder, New Power Soul...I like it better than Musicology, too.

ok, so 480,000 copies isn't a stellar hit, but a flop? lol

Many so-called up-and-coming musical acts that get alot of attention sell about as many copies.

Yea, but considering the level of artist P is & the way he promoted the shit out of it, I can see it being labelled as such. He kinda can't win neutral

Their definition of what constitutes a flop is completely inconsistent if you look at the others on the list. For both Prince and Michael Jackson they compare the sales of Rave and History against Purple Rain and Thriller (respectively), ie in each case their biggest selling albums of their entire careers. For other artists they only look at the album that immediately followed the release of a big seller! And with other artists they talk about worldwide sales as opposed to US sales!

For that reason I don't see why Prince is no.5...I mean look at Vanilla Ice, he drops from 7million US sales to 48,000!!!!! Now that certainly IS a flop! Or how about the amazing Stevie Wonder 'Key of Life' (1976), 10 million; 'Secret Life of Plants,' less than 500,000!

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

There's just something about the Rave album that ain't right. Too many tracks, not in the right sequence, too many guest stars. I don't think the album is bad, but some of the material (Undisputed, Hot Wit U) is not up to par. Strange But True! The production is better than Emancipation, though. The album was probably a victim of the "produced by Prince, but I am the Symbol" era. His leaner albums, like Musicology and 3121, are more well-received.

Hot Wit U!

I think they mean "flop" musically... not money wise! Because they paid Prince $10 Million for Rave. Plus he got to own his masters.

Musically I agree, it was a wrong boring move! All those known female talents and Prince made crap with them!

But I think Prince LEARNED from Rave on how to make a great album for the masses when he goes for the big boys. Like the Musicology Project & Tour..

So it wasnt a flop because he learned from it smile

I just don't understand why he didn't pick "So Far, So Pleased" as the first single. It's one of the weaker songs, but let's face it--a single courts the masses.. And that one is the most white-friendly, heavy rotation-friendly cut on the album.

Prince knows exactly what mass audiences want--he proved that during the Superbowl. It may not be music "Prince Fans" crave or want... but for a bunch of drunk, frat guys drinking beer and pizza in their livingrooms, the music delivered.

He just seems to constantly pick bad singles. Rave could have been a hit. Despite being so bland, it was Diamonds & Pearls pt2 to me -- catchy songs that don't stretch too much. shrug
