1. I love that this thread is full of people telling others what is or is not funk. I don't think there is a definition--it's a bit of a subjective term.

2. In my eyes the title track 3121 IS funk.

Black Sweat is an even better funk track.

If you cant find the funk in ICPC, or even Lolita, you don't recognize funk when its in your face. But to the title of this thread; How do you seriously, w/ a straight face, pose this question to Prince of all people? Do you understand who this person is? What on God's green earth are you talking about?

Perhaps the title of the thread shout be re-phrased to say "Can he "leave the really awful, bland, crap funk behind" on this album just once"

I just had to help you out because if these aren't the words in bold that you "MEANT" to say, then, WOW!!! He was great on "The Carter". Hell, he's even doin' alright, now. But, he's a bit overrated. He has still yet to surpass his influence in "Jay Z" when "Jay Z" was at his best (During the periods of "Reasonable Doubt" and "The Blueprint"). I could right his lyrics down. I might even be able to freestyle something in allusion to his style and swagger. In the end, he ain't nuthin' special. AND THAT ESPECIALLY GOES FOR "Mr. BOOSIE BADAZZ"!!! All of them will go in up in flames for this blasphemy of "Hip-Hop Pioneer": Kool Herc".

you didn't need to help me out nor change my words..... confused

I wasn't comparing him to anyone else. I just said he has a nice little flow.

didn't say he was changing the face of hip hop.....

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! You don't gotta be breakin' mah balls, ma'am! I don't mean to disrespect you in any way. I "KINDA" like his flow, too. But, I don't know. He gets repetitive to me. Let's just say that he's an exceptional rapper that hails from within his regional vicinity (In other words, "DA DIRTEH SAHF"). Or, hell, better yet, let's agree to disagree. Like I said, though, if I am annoying you in any way, just tell me. sad

I understand what lastdecember is trying to say. Basically Prince shouldn't abandon the FUNK, but switch it up or make it as stanky as it was back in the 80's. Let's face it the funk we've been smelling on the last couple of albums has been kinda weak. It'd be great if it were by any other artist, but by Prince's standards, he just doesn't bring it like he did back in the 80's. Lastdecember probably thinks it's stale and formulaic due to the his keeping his ear to what's popular today. Come on, would you compare "Head" to "Illusion, Coma..." or even "DMSR" to "Lolita"? No way.

Another thing is that Funk isn't everything. I know the majority of you orgers love it when Prince gets down and dirty, but his music is more diverse than that and he's just as good in (almost) any genre. I'm with Smedley when he says that Prince can do what he wants as long as the music and lyrics are good. I can get into whatever kind of music Prince is doing as long as it's good. It doesn't have to be limited to just funk.

If you want some funk so bad avoid the shower for a week. Sheeeeeit! lol

Exactly what i have been trying to get across. I dont mind Prince and Funk, its a part of who he is. But my worry is his being influenced from things around him, true songs like "Illusion or Incense" or the many others that Prince has done on the last few albums dating back to New Power Soul/Emancipation days, have all had this similar VIBE going on thats really my point, i dont mind Prince playing Funk or gettin down, thats part of his make-up, just as Rock and yes even Pop are to him. I think we have forgotten how good Prince can write when he wants too. I mean even look at the ballads hes done last 2 albums, On the Couch and Satisfied, they are the same song. Once again this is NOT a complaint but merely a suggestion, my vibe so far for Planet Earth is it MIGHT be something like The Truth was, but then again with "Guitar" as the first single, u cant blame a little worry.

prince has to do his own thang foremost but 2 me it has 2 b exciting
now is the time 4 some conceptual stuff again, like 'the rainbow children', prince and 'Gold'... but it seems the next one is goin 2 b just like the previous two, just a bunch of songs put together on a disc... without a real direction
people saying he plays 2 much funk don't know what the funk they talking bout, u feel it or u don't ... don't forget he's almost turning 50, it's grown mens funk, less nasty, more style!! i thought 'Prettyman' was the last really nasty sounding funkjam...

the jazzrock fans should be satisfied with all them instrumental albums over the last years, shouldn't they?
what is jazzrock anyway?

GOOD music is the best smile

Dont get me wrong, i love Princ funkin it up, but for a guy who can do it all, his FUNK is stuck at this point. Its time for a lyric driven album, and Prince playing some guitar, his sampling/programming needs to be left behind just once, not that its a bad thing for him, its just being overused to death on the last two studio albums.

That's Why I loved One Nite Alone!
It was so basic and raw

If Prince wanted to he could even compose a song from a Traffic jam
to the sounds of the Amazon Jungle.

So you make a good point he needs to expand his creativity again!

no no no! You can never have too much funk! He's had a few funky songs scattered here and there over the last few albums, but it's been quite a while since he put out an album that was mostly funk. If anything we need *more* funk.

(Just wait until FuNkeNsteiN sees this thread. lol )

all he gonna do is bitch and moan that he wants another tired ass james brown E major9th chicken scratch guitar bass poppin and thumpin all over the motherfuckin place mindless undeep funk record....Funk is dead
Jazz-Rock is whats happenin
Hip Hop,rocknroll,rap, is whats hot

Oh hell to the damn naw! Anything but shit hop. Yeah, shit hop is what's happening these days, that's why music is so fucked up and boring these days.

True, funk is dead, and that's what's the problem. Prince is the only one still making funk and someone needs to keep it alive because these dull asses in the music scene these days don't have no damn creativity, talent, or rhythm to come up with a new style of uptempo ass-shakin' type music. They are satisfied with making slow ass dull shit from now on.

If you want some shit hop, turn on the radio. There's plenty of it for you to listen to. Let Prince keep making the jams for the party people who have the rhythm and good taste to like ass-shakin' jams. Prince is the only one that makes that type of music and when he's gone, that's it....no more jams whatsoever.....unless these dull asses wake up and get back to jamming again.

Funkenstein is young. He wasn't even born when those styles were going on. His hearing funk for the first time would be in fairly recent years. Apparently, he had the good taste to go looking for something better than what was being force-fed him on the radio. That's called "being an individual with a mind of your own".
