Beating the "Purple Rain Dead Horse"

Are U tired of hearing about "Purple Rain" every time some Prince reference is made? It is sooooo 20 years ago!
I know, I know- that is what he'll always be associated with, the same way people still call Madonna "The Material Girl", But LET IT GO PEOPLE! mad

I was just at the gas station, and since it's a nice day, I had the windows down and the music high- "Xenophobia" from "ONA- Live" was jammin' music
Brotha attendant, came along boppin' his head, and asked me what I was listenin' to. I told him.
His reply: "That's good, but 'When Doves Cry' was the $#!&. Purple Rain was his best stuff. He's been a punk since then." disbelief

I just said, "I was a senior in high school when that came out. I'm gonna be 40 in August. It's time to move on." sigh

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

For me, I'm more sick of "the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince." I mean, I know he kinda deserves it for changing his name, but still.

i just figure, if he didn't want it to be an albatross around his neck for the rest of his life, he shouldn't have made such a great album. it doesn't bother me when that's the only connection some people can make. it's better than someone saying, "oh man, ARMS OF ORION IS MY JAM!!!" shake

And no, it doesn't bother me at all. It was the pinnacle of his fame and is probably the best, most concise piece of work he's ever released. I like other albums better, but none of his albums, song-for-song are as stellar as this.

so basically, you'd rather listen to crap than good stuff that you've already heard a lot? k.

Well, in your profile, it says you're 14, so I can understand that to some extent. We'll see how you feel when you're 20, 25, 30. With me, as I get older, the music I like gets older.

well, there you go.... shrug you like what you like, but you'll have to excuse the rest of us if we remember him best for 1999, Purple Rain and SOTT and not NPS and Rave wink

Like Prince did? I mean, it's not like he's still playing those songs in concert while ignoring just about anything he's recorded in the past decade or so. Oh wait, that is the case. How many "final ever greatest hits" tours have we had now?

if PR and 1999 were never released and only circulating as bootlegs, i bet you'd be screeching along with everyone else about how great those songs are.

If PR and 1999 were never released, Prince would be playing at county fairs and this wouldn't even be a topic for discussion. Not that he hasn't done anything brilliant since then, and I almost never listen to those discs. Just nothing that connected with such a large audience.

Glad to generate discussion... biggrin
Point um, taken.

The point is, I get tired of "Purple Rain" jokes, references, etc. whenever Prince is mentioned.
I esp. hate when people break into their renditions of the chorus for me! shake

It doesn't bother me either ,but as far as it being the most stellar and concise piece of work well lets go even further back to his 1999 album. That was also as you say stellar and concise. Myself I don't concider those who only think of Purple Rain when they think of Prince TRUE Prince fans. Do you?

It bothers me a little bit that Purple Rain gets such a bad rap within the Prince "fan" community. I think it does get that rap because it came so early in his career (6 years in, vs. 29 years now . . .)

Personally, I believe that SOTT is a much better piece of work (and is also my favorite). But I have to be realistic that Purple Rain is more widely considered his masterpiece. None of his projects have been as successful and far-reaching as Purple Rain.

Side note: take the movie Purple Rain out of the equation, I think 1999 is a strong contender.

I sadly disagree with your post. Since your 14(from what your profile says), you obviously missed a great era when P's music was pure genious back in the early 80's. It was fun times to us who are older then you. Im 33 and grew up with P music of 1999, PR, ATWIAD, and that.

I ,at the time of him rising to be a success, thought he was pure genious at that time and era.

Kids, when will they ever learn?

I highly agree with you. I thought the original 1999 album(NOT the remix), was great for that time in the early 80's.

Well, that's "brotha's opinion. If it's one u don't agree with, that's cool, right? I believe I was the only one on this site that hoped to GOD that P wasn't going to play the song Purple Rain at the Super Bowl. EVERBODY as I recall, was swearing up and down, that P was definately going to play that song. Personally, I didn't want him to do it there because, damn player,...play something else. I saw P three times on the Purple Rain tour, when he played the song and it was fresh. Not saying the cat shouldn't play it today at his concerts but at the Super Bowl, I was hoping against hope that he wasn't going to fuck with it there at that setting. Obviously he did, and it was a nice performance. It's just that I"ve seen the facial expressions, I know exactly what P is going to play during the solo. So, I said all of that to say this. u asked brutha to move on. I can ask P that. I don't cuz it's his right to play that song the same way with the same exact poses and expressions untill the end of time.

They're not neccessarily overrated just because they were popular. Sometimes albums that are insanely popular are deservedly so.

And he should be happy to do it. I hate it when the Prince's of the music business complain that people want to hear the old shit. It's not a reflection of the audience that they want to hear the old shit, it's a reflection of his inability to connect with as big an audience contemporarily, whether through his music, or his publicity stunts, or his cryptic "I'm a religious leader" spouting Revelations crap, or the fact that he's still dressing like it's the 80's. That's what we love him for, but to non-"fans" it's pretty ridiculous.

Most people, when you ask them what they think of Prince, will say "He's a musical genius. But to the general public, he's a novelty act doing impressions of a much bigger star.

I mean, I love him still. I'm just saying, that's why people who aren't Prince fans want to hear "Purple Rain." It's not their fault that they don't dig "Get on the Boat" quite as much.
