This is why I love coming here so much... I never feel like I get to talk about Prince very much in reality.
It's hard to bring him up in conversation... because I get the feeling that nobody around me really takes him seriously. My mom always brings him up casually to company, but in a sarcastic way, "she discovered Prince, the artist formerly known as Prince"... today I almost wanted to tell her off and say "he's Prince again... has been for 7 years" I mean, he's more to me than just the "fad" I'm currently into. He's more than my favorite singer... excuse me, musician. I get so much from his work that I could go on forever about it. I want to be taken seriously for liking him and I wish others around me did take him seriously so I could have an intelligent conversation. I come here because I HAVE to talk about him... I can't keep anything about him bottled up... and I like being with people that understand him the way I do. I love you guys. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. My very best friend feels the same, but there is really noone else and I spend a lot of time listeing to his music, watching his movies and concerts and reading info about him and I get very very angry that noone takes it real serious and often make fun of him! So I am glad to hear I am not alone.... Gemini rising on the 7th day.

I've had the same problem.. Some people laugh or poke fun... although if the person is a music enthusiast and is willing to listen further beyond the media and preconceptions, they can change their stance. I've argued with people to look closer at his works, delve into material, the sounds, creation process.. their eyes starting getting bigger. Of course I'm jumping down and doing fanatical hand motions at this point...
Some have turned around.

i've brought up Prince before, but mostly because i have a big music oriented group of friends. i'm always up for talking about one of the best modern day musicians around.

Yeah, I feel the same (though slightly less these days as I'm getting older)...
But yeah, most people just don't get it, and I don't get why they don't get it! But that's the way it is, it seems. Places like the org and HQ are like an outlet for us. Regardless of our differences, we are all here for the same reason - Prince and his music have been a major influence on our lives. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

aw Dreamy... i kno how ya feel. I luvs ya! It is kind of hard to talk about him with others, especially if they don't know that you like Prince music. And my mom thinks any music I listen to is a fad, she's also the same way abt my WW II research (which I've been doing for 13 yrs. btw). When it comes to music, most of friends just assume I only listen to the BSB, so its hard to bring up another artist. That's why I'm constantly on the org. It feels like havin a bunch of online friends. I love u guys!! "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

haha... you guys are great... its good hearing from the many friends I've made here. I'm glad I haven't heard anyone say that I'm insane and sound "needy." Heh, I AM about more than just Prince, as hard as that is to believe... but he kinda connects to me as a person more than anything else I do.
This kinda reminds me of a theme in the book "The Giver" where they said "memories are meant to be shared"... and they have this utopian society where one person has to hold all of the memories of the past in a world where there's equality, no war & no pain. It's the same with Prince. It's almost as if he dares his listeners to share his work. Not that he'd say it out loud in his music, but its like one of those subliminal suggestions he gives. It's impossible to keep things bottled up. My past fads have defined me and it seems that I never take anything seriously, especially when my "fads" have been either cartoons or God knows what... nothing applicable to reality. Prince creates an alternate reality with his music, so in a way, I'm in my own little world with him as my guide. But at times, I wish I could openly discuss it. Say "today I was up in my room listening to some Prince songs people have sent me" or "I was listening through an album and I can totally relate to this"... but at the same time, I feel like I can't say those things w/o coming off the wrong way and get a reaction like "you need to do better things with your time"... I like referring to listening to his stuff as giving my soul a makeover... which I think it has needed for a while. I want to know myself a little better so I can improve on myself. I believe he can help me achieve that sort of "enlightenment"... and I think I'll just shut up now. That's the other problem I have... once I get going, its impossible to stop cuz I don't want to stop talking about him... cuz things seem so much brighter since I welcomed him into my head. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. I think the most difficult thing will be the fact I want to expand my collection to at least 12 albums... how do I go about explaining that?
Can't be done. My folks will probably look at me and think I'm hung up on the guy... but it is so much more than that. I don't want to get more of his stuff so I own more of his stuff... its cuz I want to know him better... and also have a good array of music on my shelf. The 6 albums of his I own are 1000x better than everything else I own. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Its such a dramatic book. I love it- the memories he had to bear, the learning of simple concepts such as color and choice. "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

That line says it all doesn't it? I enjoy the decidedly weird oddness that is Prince.org, where the obsessive, fanatical, and all around fixated come together to debate what is funky, which hairstyle is best, and when the last truly classic song was recorded...You know the REALLY important stuff. This may in fact, not be "reality", but I love it here! [Edited 6/10/07 19:43pm]

i can absolutely agree. i have converted my two younger cousins and still working on my lil sis, and my bf likes prince music as well, ... but i can see it in their faces, and my bf has expressed to me that lately all i do is talk about Prince and listen to Prince(my home, car, at my cousins', work, ipod, etc). I'm just so excited by what he has been up to and by all the jewels i have come across lately. He has sooo much music out there!!! and now, .. i'm just heavily addicted to him and talking about him.
i need to calm down... but i don't know how. (my younger cousins, i turned them to prince with 3121.. the 15 yr old is really digging Face Down right now! It's just so exciting!!!)

I think I have every album he has made, minus "Karmasutra" which doesn't particularly interest me. And then once you get into the CD singles, it's a whole new world of awesome remixes and alternate versions too! Not to mention one off releases that never made albums. |

Yeah i totally understand, over the years i've had many a strange look about listening to his music, but 1 thing i've learned over those years is that you listen to what makes u smile regardless of what others think, so i say go buy those albums u want!!!
Oh and i've managed to convert my neice/nephew and a best mate into my way of thinking over prince..... Tomorrow the world "Fella's would u look at that tail............... would u eva....."
.....I don't do this because i have a choice.........it was pre-determined b4 my birth.........

YES! Thanks org members for providing an outlet for my Prince obsession! I've been a long-time fan, and many people I know can't believe how excited I still get about the man and his music, even at my age I listen to a lot of music, different styles, etc. but once I get started with Prince, there's no turning back! we're like two petals from the same flower, baby...

Well, I want to set a reasonable goal for myself... owning 12 albums of one artist might sound a little ridiculous to some... but its not like I'm going around saying, "I have to get every single thing he's done." Sure, I'd like to get more and more of his stuff and get to know him better... but I gotta draw a line somewhere. My collection will be various, but I want to focus on the important things, so it will be concentrated on a few diff. areas. I wish I just knew more people personally that I understand him. Saying I like him turns heads because he is notorious for being weird... I understand why they would think that, but I wish they'd see him the way I do. These days, I keep in my back of my mind that when he's not onstage, he's very reserved & a bit eccentric (as most geniuses are)... he just expresses himself so openly and people don't want to see all sides of him... I suppose they think it'd be better if he kept those secrets to himself... but having said that, that's very brave of him to put it all out there. If given the chance, I'd ask him "if your music is so personal, why do you insist on sharing it with the world?" for that reason. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. I don't want to have every single thing thats every been associated w/ him...
