I thought the same thing. This is the second "tracklist" I've seen like this. If they are on the album, wouldn't they automatically be the "album" version"?????

Well, looking on the bright side (as I'm trying to do), this must be some pretty hot album if Prince and Columbia are willing to release something this high profile with a running time of what was, ten years ago, considered contractual obligation length in Prince terms.
I mean, I know the 80s albums were all pretty much about 40-45mins with a couple of exceptions, but that was mainly because the main-selling mediums of the time restricted the length of selling anything longer without going down the double album route.
But what with the potential length a CD can handle, mixed with Prince's usual enthusiasm for releasing lots of music, there must be a damn good reason why both parties are happy to create something this short and hopefully sweet.

Here's hoping for the Lovesexy of the 00s. Or failing that, just something worth listening to over and over again.

When the album comes out I will remember this post - You make a very good point... I hope you're right!

No, but Sinead's latest comes in 2 CDs with the same songs, a pop version and an acoustic one nod

Romeoblu

Most of my favorite albums are under 45 mins.

One of the best albums from last year was Razorlights album and that was only 39 minutes.

Chromeo's fantastic new album is only 40 odd mins long. Records this lenght are less likely to out stay there welcome.

Plus 45 mins is about the time it takes me to drive to work each day so I can fit the album in before work and before I get home. I hate not getting the chance to listen to an album in one sitting.

I am feeling grateful that we will be blessed with new music soon!

'Future Baby Mama' caught my eye, is it a funny kind o song or deep?

Maybe its the long version of 'The Rules' ???

I am wondering if P. is hip to the whole steampunk genre with his lovely man corset. Purrrrr.

One thing that feels hopeful to me about guitar, which I'm really diggin more that I listen to it, is that there is a live band feel to this, unlike Musicology which was all studio and felt extremely plastic in places. 3121 was very plastic but it wasn't gaudy like musuckology.

I didn't think before I saw what may be the final tracklisting that number of songs or album length really meant anything but I guess 10 songs can be considered kind of short. I thought it would be at least 12, oh well lets see how it goes.

i can't help shake the creepy feeling that once we get Planet Earth
we will be able to compile a classic prince album out of all three,
Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth together.

the rest can be relegated to the b-side folder biggrin

What's giving me hope here is that although Musicology was a CD clearly aimed at the masses with its commercial sounding songs, it was the first time in a while he'd released such an album; the first time since Rave, I suppose. So as a fan, I accepted that it was an album designed to get him back in the public eye and perhaps make a few dollars - and there's nothing wrong with that.
3121 seemed to have the same idea, and the two worked as book-ends. 3121 seemed almost like it was introducing those who'd discovered his work via Musicology into his world of 'concepts'. But instead of trying to scare those new fans off, he gave them more of the same, but with hints of the more obscure elements of his previous work. The title track for example, along with The Word (very uniquely Prince) and even Love shows Prince doing his 80s synth thing (to great effect) which I'd guess a lot of new fans would have found very distinctive of Prince.
So with Planet Earth, I'm hoping that he's doing that thing he often does by taking his current vibe through a couple of releases, and then introducing a wonderfully perverse version of it.

But I'm probably going to be wrong and as IstenSzek says, it'll be part three of the Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth suite that in future years we'll all be trying to pick the best tracks out of to create the perfect album from. neutral

I always liked wackin with the idea that he should release 2 versions of a CD. A mainstream version for sale and the rough demo version for the core.

It's nearly midnight so I can't play the Verizon download and the Sony download (which automatically comes up in WMP with the name "Guitar Mastered") with any real volume, but it seems like there are some subtle differences between them. I've had the Verizon download on repeat for a week and have become very familiar with it. As soon as the Sony version started it sounded different (better) without me even thinking about comparing the two.

Of course, I could be wrong...but this way my experience tonight.

Peace, David
