In A Large Room With No Light (Appreciation Thread) This has to be in my top 5 favorite outtakes and one of Prince's best outtakes. This song is completely perfect, the lyrics and music, everything. With a nice little message. I wouldn't change a thing in this song. The horns are incredible. Prince has some great outtakes from 1986, and this one is a real good one. In A Large With No Light rarely get's mentioned. I just thought it sould have it's own thread for some Appreciation as a great song. If you heard it, Share your thoughts. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

That song is the shit!!!! The music speaks in volumes, he was dealing with Miles Davis a lot during that time, thats why the horns are so profound. I discovered this song on a bootleg copy of the Crucial album a friend of mine in high school made for me and when i first heard it i was like "WOW !!!" it was clearly one of Prince's most experimental songs, it's one of my favorite songs of his i play Drums to.

Classic funk hornz!
Actually the lyrics and tempo of the song are quite disturbin and uneasy. Lana drew a picture in school 2day One that made her mother cry A picture of a woman with a drink in her hand Standing by a child with no eyes Washington reaction based upon revenge Babies blown 2 kingdom come Damn the logic Cartoon characters look better when they're on the run Danny dropped the dime on his girlfriend He said he didn't wanna go 2 jail alone The seed lives in the same mind With the thought that says we all should be stoned And people lookin' 4 angels in the sky Whenever they're broken-hearted Love is grown, seeds are sown A fire don't burn unless it's started Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny In a large room with no light? A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations That aren't right Everytime U wake up there's a little motherfucker Talkin' big stuff in your face (Are U happy?) U only get the kind of people that open their mouth just 2 swap feet Welcome 2 the rat race Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny In a large room with no light? A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations That aren't right Oh, if U could just pass your history class Maybe life would be alright Until then U'll be lookin' 4 a penny In a large room with no light Yeah! Life {repeat 2 fade} Sam 8) Prince 2010 Good Luck for Future & Tour

brilliant song/sound. when i hear it, i think of this:
"He had that relationship with other people, Sheila E particularly and of course Wendy and Lisa. From a conceptual basis, Wendy and Lisa were the two musicians in any of his bands who were able to tap into him on some subliminal level - they really did have a musical relationship that was closer than with anyone that he worked with. My relationship was a little bit more from a player's standpoint. Because of the tremendous drummer and percussionist that Sheila is, [it meant] that relationship was very important. Some of the more interesting and more enjoyable music from my point of view was when Sheila, Prince, Wendy and Lisa and I would just go into the studio and just jam. I've got quite a few tapes of sessions like that. Purely ad lib, instrumental sessions, where we'd go in and just make a lot of music. None of it was going to get released; it was for our own enjoyment. Wendy and Lisa don't really come from a jazz background [but] they shared in the ability to be very spontaneous. Our ability to go in and spontaneously play some music and at the end of an hour come out with some music that at least we could say has some kind of musical validity and continuity. It may not have the harmonic sophistication of a straight-up jazz band, but the ethic was very similar." - Eric Leeds http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

beautiful, simply beautiful. if he's still creating gems like this, they must be tucked away in the vault someplace. [Edited 6/13/07 8:54am]

I'd like to say lots about it but for me it's 1 of those tracks I can't find, That and "moonbeam levels" are said to be fantatsic, but I've never heard either of 'em.
Crucial is very inspiring for me

I wish someone could find the epic thread about this song that was here a few years back.
Not to be self-aggrandizing, but I started it with a post called "Show Ya Love -- In A Large Room With No Light" in which I examined the lyrics and praised the song to the heavens. Yomomma (I'm pretty sure) came in and put all these incredible images to the text. It was awesome. This was also the beginning of a wave of "Show Ya Love" threads. Good times... Peace, David

I was living in Oz between May 2003 and May 2004 and a very kind Aussie friend copied me a lot of bootleg CD's. This song was amongst the treasure trove - fabulous, fabulous song that reminds me of my life over there.

I agree...but there is one small problem - there is a wee word amongst the lyrics that wont bode well with his current beliefs - and the thought of him butchering and putting an unbearable noise over the top of it just makes me cringe - so lets just let the song remain underground.

released when? and on what? I have no idea when it was released, but it was flagged as Dream Factory outtake. It's still a boot, but good quality. I'm hot and I don't care who knows it...I got a job to do.

Brilliant song. I wish a better quality version of it was circulating. It really sucks not to have this amazing track in pristine quality.

I love this spooky style of his. Great tune!
Hard to put my finger on what I like about it, but it's irresistable. I do think these more experimental times of prince are over. In a word, the poor bugger has lost his nerve.
