-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Discussion and Theories about the Symbol Name PLEASE NOTE: These messages are in reverse order, with the most recent messages on top, and the earliest messages on the bottom. If this is your first time reading, jump to the bottom and read your way up. If you keep returning to this page, you need only read the top messages to stay updated. It has been about a month since I first discovered this page. I am fascinated by this discovery! Could this be a mystery to ? He has said before that he doesn't know what the symbol means. At the end of the movie "3 Chains O' Gold" he says that he only knows that it is his name. Who he has become. Sure he must have read up on alchemy. But I don't think he takes it literally. He even he recommends the Bible to those who have a open & metaphoric mind. (From a flyer that was pasted out at the Dec. 28, 1996 concert) In a Italian magazine (Sorrisi e Canzoni, Dec. 22-28, 1996) that can be found on the Uptown web page, he said "I believe in the existence of a God that rules our minds. But I do not believe in all the religions that men have wanted to create" This leads me to believe that he does not belong to any religion or organization such as The Golden Dawn. Like all artists, he loves metaphors. Its how he gets his messages across. It keeps things interesting. R&R bands use them for names. Why not the Artist? Even if it is a symbol. Good God, Rock & Roll is a metaphor for sex (Slang, from the early fifties I think). So as far as all this alchemy stuff goes. I'm taking it all seriously but, not literally. - Barbara Neilsen (bnielsen@netcom.ca) Watching on TV today, holding the symbol guitar, I was immediately struck with a very interesting thought. When he holds it to play, it points up in the exact shape and angle of the "original" Soapstone symbol. Check it out!! I never thought of it until I saw him playing... - Lee Schultss (schultss@voyager.net) The symbol looks to me like overlayed symbols. The most evident is the part that looks like the traditional symbol for female - the circle with a line protruding straight down with a small perpindicular dividing line half-way. The next overlay is the arrow shape that is common in the masculine symbols of Mars and of Sagittarius. However, this arrow is pointing down rather than up at a 45 degree angle. Could mean he's now a man firmly grounded in his feminine aspect. The half mustache-like symbol seems to unravel from left and open to the right. Could indicate his unraveling and opening into the "right" direction. Given he was raised in the west and the west reads from left to right and up to down, it's not surprising at all. What I find most interesting is that there is no evidence of the glyph for Gemini (which is his sun sign). Just some speculation. - Gregory Brian (asta@erols.com) Its very interesting to read about the origin of the symbol. I agree that he (or someone direct around him) has seen the alchemy-sign and based the redesign of the symbol on it. But it reminded me too on what I saw before the concerts he gave in Holland in 1992 (D&P tour). Anyone who have been to the concerts in may (26 & 27) and in July (5, 7 & 8) probably will remember it. Before the concert started you could see an promotion on the (then still unreleased) album (with pieces on video's and more). At one point the video showed the title of the album (with the sound of a big bang). The interesting thing is that in may it was the 'original' O+> (male/female) sign and in July it was replaced by the symbol. I know that he has control on such things, so it looks like he changed mind in the period between the end of may and the beginning of July 1992. Can anyone who have been to the concerts in that period confirm my story? Maybe we can find out in which concert he actually changed the video. - JanF (prn1996@worldaccess.nl) A "new" discovery... the symbol for gold is a circle with a dot inside it, and [look at] the CD from the 1992 album, where it is just covered with symbols with dots in them, and rays coming from the circle. Can U say "Children of the Sun?" Very interesting! - Amy M (amc@soujorn.com) Regarding the "3 Chains O' Gold" part of the theory... I think it can quite easily be split into 3 pieces. Think about it, it is IMPOSSIBLE to split that symbol into 3 with no duplication of parts. The male sign O-> and the female sign O+ share something in common, the O . The newly discovered Soapstone sign (+> also shares something with the male sign, the >, and shares something with the female sign, the +. So I think the "new" symbol is a very logical combination of O+ O-> (+>. Each separate symbol has a part in each of the others. Perfect... - Lee Schultss (schultss@vixa.voyager.net) Some [people] have recently been talking about similarities in 's music to certain aspects of alchemy and the Golden Dawn. . . lots of good ideas in there, but if I could add one of my own, I'd have you all look to two books by James Redfield. . . now, this may be corny but "The Celestine Prophecy" and "The Tenth Insight" have some fundamentally sound philosophies and views which I can't help but see running through TAFKAP's newest music. One particular idea - that has been in his music since the beginning - is the whole power of love theme; love is the cornerstone of the CP. Also, there are striking similarities between TAFKAP's "awakening" (going from "May U live 2 see the DAWN" to "Welcome 2 the DAWN"; the name change; the concept behind "Most Beautiful Girl In the World"; to name but a few elements of it) and the 6th-9th Insights; transcending common boundaries in mind, body, and soul. Well, I'm not trying to convert anyone, but if you haven't read the books, I'd suggest them. Also, for you students of Alchemy - or just those who are perusing it a bit - a good book to pick up is "The Eight" by Katherine Neville. The book is a fictional tale with factual underpinnings. It deals with alchemy and several other things (including chess and symbols) which I think you all might find of interest. Mostly, though, it discusses through these things the idea of vibrations (also highly prevalent in the CP), which ties in dramatically to musicians. - C. Thomas (IWishUHvn@aol.com) Alchemy has traditionally been associated with the transmutation of base metals into gold. The ancient Alchemists made clear in their writings that the substance of their transformation was the human soul. Their goal was the transmutation of the base metals of human emotions and instincts within the subconscious mind into the gold of self-realization. The vehicles of this transformative process were the archetypes, the Inner Guides." - theartsitcurrentlyknownasmelissa (biggus@nwrain.com) I have not, as yet, seen this symbol in relation to soapstone. It seems to be a combination of other symbols. Soapstone is compacted talc. It is also known as Steatite. It has been used to carve fetishes, due to it's softness. I would be very interested in obtaining this symbol book. As an elixir it can be used for birth control and to cross over the "veil" of dimensions. - Tami ~ Ancient Voices (stoneple@sedona.net) I flipped open my dictionary (coincidentally the SAME one seen in the Love41Another video used by 0(+>) and looked up "Hermetic" just to get a "non-biased" perspective. It said: "of or relating to the GNOSTIC writings or teachings arising in the first three centuries A.D. and attributed to Hermes Trismegistus." So I flipped to "gnosticism" where it said (I kid you not!): "the thought and practice esp. of various cults of late pre-Christian and early Christian centuries distinguished by the conviction that matter is evil and that EMANCIPATION comes through gnosis." And "gnosis" is the "esoteric knowledge of spiritual truth... essential to salvation." - Kathy (LaserBlast@aol.com) Mind you I don't mind at all if 0(+> is into some esoteric or Gnostic beliefs... being open minded and into esoteric thing myself. Though I have a feeling some fans will. I get the feeling 0(+> might also believe in reincarnation based on some of his lyrics "Contrary to popular belief, no one's life is brief. U go there once U come again... again... and again." Probably got that wrong... but that's my interpretation of the line. But who knows...maybe he's talking bout sex. As for the "soapstone" symbol... it looks to close to Prince's new name to be coincidence. Of course the old "male/female" symbol also a lot like the "soapstone" symbol without the "horn" shape. And there isn't any secret meaning behind the "male/female" symbol is there? Of course the question we have to ask is who came up with the new symbol? If it was just one of the art directors on the "0(+>" album... then it's possible that they were asked to come up with something new and come across this symbol in looking some Egyptian themes. "Damn this symbol looks so much like the bottom half of Prince's "male/female" symbol... let's use it!!!" So they took the symbol with realizing it's meaning. Of course... only they and 0(+> know for sure. But it makes for ripe speculation doesn't it? Let the fun begin... - Victor (enigma@dorsai.dorsai.org) I believe that many of his "connections" (that we see reoccurring in his songs, his aesthetics) happen in the same way- he simply finds the preexisting links and feels some kind of cosmic resonance, i.e. FATE, rather than coincidence... That is the method of the 'genius'... Notice, too, to support your theory, that the first album accredited to the symbol was NOT the "Androgyny" one, but rather The Gold Experience (as noted in the recent wedding contest answers.) And, NO WAY would he ever give one singular name to his symbol- it, as you have noted, stands for a crossroads of a variety of discourses that couldn't possibly expressed in the limitations of a singular word [of course even words have multiple crosscurrents/interpretations, O{+> makes use of this fact in his lyrics/music] but most people are more inclined to stick to more bounded resonances with words than with pictures. - Erin Kelley (eekelley@ucdavis.edu) First of all, I too have to admit that the similarity between the Alchemy sign and The Artist's new name is no coincidence. One look at that picture, and Eye No! he's also seen the Alchemy sign. But if I were you (the one's conducting the in-depth research of Alchemy) I would not continue to spend too much time trying to understand the relationship between Alchemy and The Artist's new name. I tend to agree with the person that said he probably was flipping through this book when he saw the alchemy sign and noticed the similarity between his now famous male/female sex/love sign (without horn) and the arrow and cross portion of the alchemy symbol and was "blown away". I suspect that when he made the connection he probably did some reading on the subject and was immediately inspired to use "gold" as his new color and theme, which ultimately led to recording "3 Chains O' Gold", the NPG "Goldnigga" project, and of course "The Gold Experience" Now, to truly understand the name change, you have to go back to the time when he made the connection. I suspect that this was in early to mid 1992 (obviously before he completed or released the O{+> album) It's not uncommon for a Prince/O{+> album to undergo title changes, but if anyone else can remember, the O{+> album was reportedly at one time going to be titled Androgyny. I believe that he was going to display the old male/female sex/love sign in much the same way that he displayed the new sign (with the horn) on the face of the cover of the album. I also think it's interesting that the album is titled with the symbol, and the movie/video for the album is titled "3 Chains O' Gold". So the question is - what are the 3 chains of gold that make up his name (1) the male sex symbol (2) the female sex symbol, and (3) the alchemy sign. But the three things combined take on a much stronger meaning to the artist, something that cannot be put into words. Here's something to think about - someone once posted on the PPML that the bottom portion of Prince's cloud guitar (where the amplifier plug is located) resembles the horn part of his name, it's just upside down. If anyone has a clear picture of his guitar you will see that the resemblance is almost as stunning as the alchemy sign. But, any fan knows that the cloud guitar was first introduced in "Purple Rain" in 1984! (and yes, I've looked at a 1984 picture which clearly shows that the design of the guitar has remained unchanged throughout the years). This is why I believe that he was "blown away" when he saw the alchemy sign, because not only does it contain elements of his combined male/female sex/love sign, the alchemy symbol also contains an element of his beloved guitar! I can only imagine the thoughts that must have gone through his mind at that point - he had finally found his true name, and the rest history. Although he may explain someday what the symbol means to him, I do not believe that he will ever give a pronunciation to the symbol. The reason is this: once the symbol is given a pronunciation, everyone will refer to him only by his pronounceable name and the symbol at that moment will cease to exist - giving way to the pronunciation. I think the symbol which he has taken as his name is much to important for him to destroy - they are the nucleus of his soul, "...melt down no they will never. They will shine 4 ever!" God bless him for allowing him to find his true name. - Mr G Berusch (PYFY63A@prodigy.com) This leads me to believe that Prince must have used this exact same book since the author mentions that he "recreated" the symbols, and the (+> symbol (number 366 in the book) does not have a reference to another work or drawing. - Richie B. (richie@ljouwert.et.tudelft.nl) I was listening to Budokan, and this quote came up: "This song is about the ingredients changing right in front of your eyes..." The song it is about? GOLD - Kevin L. Smith (cckevin@amber.indstate.edu) Well, I'm not sure why I'm continuing to look into this, but your original discovery has certainly piqued my interest. Toward that end, I started on a thin thread of research on the www. My initial findings turned up a bunch of information on alchemy. There are many sites devoted to this "science," which you can find with a quick search on Yahoo or some other search engine site. I did not turn up the actual symbol. Something that interested me, though, was that C.G. Jung (the "father" of modern psychology) is linked with some alchemy pages. I was consequently led to the Jung Institute of Los Angeles web page. This page lists a piece of work called the Transformation of Libido, a "Seminar on CG Jungs Symbols of Transformation." I know Michael Bland has cited Jung as a very "cool" philosopher in some chats with fans. I have not read Jung's stuff in a long time, as I minored in philosophy for my undergrad a few years ago. In the end, I'm just having fun and this "research" is not very serious, but I thought you might like to hear about what goofy tree I'm barking up. I'm wondering if you might find a useful resource on one of these alchemy pages to whom you could e-mail your scan of the symbol and ask for suggestions on tracing the roots of the symbol? - Skeye (Skeye@ix.netcom.com) Lets be honest, you've discovered where Prince got his new name from, surely nobody will dispute that, and I congratulate you sir. Does the circle at the top signify anything in the book or is it just an addition of Prince's I wonder? - Simon (squinn@glam.ac.uk) Some of the purposes of Alchemy are to: get rid of addiction - (his aversion to drugs) heal sexual/mental abuse - (papa) Love/God/Spirit - his whole concept. I truly think that we/you have found the reason for the name change! I would not be surprised if the man himself didn't have some Alchemical Therapy, and someone pointed out they symbol connection to the old O+>... - Kevin L. Smith (cckevin@amber.indstate.edu) Based on the reading I've done on alchemy, I believe that Prince has undergone some type of spiritual transmutation from the Omnipotent One, which explains why his name is inexplicable. I think he's just majorly aware that he's not "in the world" but "of the world", very special and (un)common... - Leslie Timms (LLTL5C@harold.law.nwu.edu) Since none of us (I assume) can read the mind of The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, I don't think we'll ever know exactly what he means by his symbolic name. But the connection with the soapstone symbol is quite obvious. Maybe he was simply flipping through that book one day, noticed how the stem and point looked like his O+> symbol, and thought it would be cool to change it, but maybe he doesn't put much faith in the alchemic principles behind it. Or maybe he has been reading extensively and practicing a Midas touch in the private rooms of Paisley Park. Unfortunately, that extent we don't know, and may not ever know. But his symbolic name is OBVIOUSLY derived from this symbol. Very fascinating... - Lee Schultss (schultss@vixa.voyager.net) I know what u mean when u mention the 3 chains - but unfortunately haven't been able to find any 3 symbols that put together make our man's. I'm really not an expert regarding alchemy and symbolic representations, I've been acting more as a moderator in this whole process, receiving info from several fans and trying to make sense out of it. It might take a while, but I'm confident this will take us somewhere quite interesting - I've been getting amazing comments and info, though not able to digest 'em all. Hopefully we can build a great forum for discussion and research. In the SS&S book there is no other symbol that includes the horn/clef thingie as represented on the soapstone symbol... There are a few different symbols for gold, a few for silver - but none resembles our man's as closely as soapstone. You could see a vague suggestion in the style they're drawn, but... that's about it. Bronze isn't even mentioned. So, to sum it up, I don't know if we'll find the exact meaning of the symbol that soon, but a huge door has been opened into a field that is very well worth exploring. - Hyperpessimist (halvelos@grupo.bfe.pt) I thought that because whenever 0(+> decomposed his name, he did it into three parts (three chains o' gold) there were three parts to his name altogether. But on your interpretation there are only two parts: a circle and the soapstone representation. Could you see if there are two parts in the book you quote from that, when added together, make up the same thing? Would it also be possible to see if what the alchemical symbols for silver and bronze are, as this is what I take your two of the three parts of his name to represent? I think that you are pretty much on the right lines for working out what is going on, and I would be very interested to hear if you can find any other symbolic information. - Craig (J.C.Walmsley@lse.ac.uk) I think [the part about rulers fearing those who create gold] is VERY relevant in face of the WB / SLAVE struggle. You could sort of read it like this: Rulers (WB/corporate industries) suppressed it ([The Artist Formerly Known As] Prince's creativity) since they feared that the power of individuals to manufacture an unlimited supply of gold (great songs, masterpieces) would undermine the fundamentals of their absolutist reign (overflooding the market, not squeezing all the money out of each song). "Lemme know your ideas regarding this symbol, maybe 2gether we can solve the name mystery..." - Hyperpessimist (halvelos@grupo.bfe.pt) Return to Symbol Page Submit your thoughts on this discovery to the Paisley Park Mailing List "All That Glitters Is YOUR SOUL" -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Same applies here:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This is an illustration from page 74 of the book Symbols, Signs and Signets by Ernst Lehner, published by Dover Books - Copyright © 1950. The similarity between this symbol and the name now used by The Artist Formerly Known As Prince can not be mere coincidence! Does anyone want to renew speculation on what his new symbolic name means? The symbol is included in the section on "The Materials" used in alchemy, and the author says that this is the ancient symbol for the material SOAPSTONE. The book doesn't say anything specific about the symbol itself, it just presents it along with a few dozen others and an introductory text about the origins of alchemy. This introduction, from page 67 of the text, is reproduced here: ALCHEMY THE ART OF ALCHEMY was handed down through the centuries from Egypt and Arabia to Greece and Rome, and finally to western and central Europe. The aims of the alchemists were threefold: to find the Stone of Knowledge, to discover the medium of Eternal Youth and Health, and to discover the transmutation of metals. To the medieval alchemist's mind the different metals were but the same original substance in varying degrees of purity. GOLD was the purest of all and silver followed closely. All his work was directed toward one goal: the discovery of a method by which the purification of gold could be accomplished. In the Dark Ages the practice of alchemy was under ban. The church opposed it as a black and satanic art. Rulers suppressed it since they feared that the power of individuals to manufacture an unlimited supply of gold would undermine the fundamentals of their absolutistic reign. In the early days of alchemy the astronomical signs of the planets were also used as alchemical symbols. Then in the centuries of medieval persecution and suppression every alchemist invented his own secret symbols. Charlatans, quacks, and cheats took over and alchemy became, along with sorcery and witchcraft, the cesspool of fraud and extortion. In the 18th century scientists tried to pry loose the real achievements in chemistry, pharmacology, and medicine from this nearly inextricable jungle of science, magic, quack medicine, half-knowledge, and plain swindle. At the beginning of the 19th century, John Dalton, an English chemist and physicist, published his chart of atomic elements and created the scientific basis for modern chemistry and pharmacology. Good source for Prince news - unfortunately buckled under Prince's attack on websites. it was a sad day, because she was one of the nicest people in the community... she really cared about what was important (the music)... anyways... sidenote... she did something prince would NEVER do. she refunded the balance of subscriptions to her newsletter. there was no wait. a check was in the mail. folks didn't even have to ask how long it would be... yeah, it was a sad day. I really miss getting those "Prince Family" newsletters in the mail every two weeks.I still have all the old newsletters dating back to '93! They're fun to take out and read.

Then how about..."decided to call it quits"... or ..."ended a successful run"... My point was she ran a really good site that ended because of outside influences.

The Interactive Experience website, The premier Prince website for the UK, although eye cant for the life of me, remember the actual site address!! It was so cool for 2 reasons:
1. It kept me in touch all things Princely in the UK as eye used 2 live in the States at the time it was up and running!! 2. Eye had just started contributing 2 it as MPLS correspondent!! This site is now succeeded by The DawnExperiece and is run by Freedom!! Also there was another website that had just started also called The Bumpsquad, which was also out of the UK, run by some guy called Goodlove!! That was also so exciting and fresh!! Then there was the TruthAngel website, which had a very interesting Spiritual side 2 it!! Eye think the blackest time in Princes history was when he brought out those lawsuits against all these beautifull sites for such stupid pathetic reasons, of which none of these sites were doing, mainly the IE, all because they declined 2 join his Collective that he started!! Although The TruthAngel did join!! Eye dont think that the Prince site community is nearly as exciting as it used 2 b!!!
