Prince haters can fuck themselves nod

A Prince-hater once told me that the best part about being able to fuck yourself is that you never have to look your best.
He also added that buying yourself some flowers afterwards is a great way to show appreciation for having such a gift,
but if you ask me,
I think he stole that part from Oprah.

i can totally relate. whenever I get a BSB album, ppl think its to update this collection I have- which isn't true. its the same way with Prince. I don't want to have every single thing thats every been associated w/ him... I just enjoy his music soo much. 12 albums is a good goal to have. right now, I'm focusing on getting the soundtrack albums (Parade, GB) and one or 2 more.

i know alot of ppl think music for me is just singers who have good looks or can dance. but it isn't. its so hard to describe the feeling I get when I listen to my favorite music.

heh, actually that's what I did with the BSB... I just wanted to get the latest... I wasn't THAT deep into them. But again, Prince makes me do things I've never done with any other artist (or will ever do, most likely).

I thought yesterday, maybe I don't really listen to Prince because it's good music. I want to experience it to take something away from it... I felt a little bad about that cuz music's #1 purpose is entertainment, right?
So I listened through a few on my computer in whatever order came to mind... and I really did enjoy the music. More than anything else as of late.

But I was thinking "are Prince fans a minority?" that's what it feels like sometimes. But enthusiast (spelling?) would cover me. I soak in EVERYTHING, the music, lyrics, his tone... but most importantly, I think about his state of mind at the time. That's always an interesting thing to figure out.

Check out my latest blog entry on this matter. http://www.xanga.com/DreamyPopRoyalty

The funny thing with Prince is that more and more, I feel like I change my mind all the time about what certain songs are about or mean to me.

You all know how much I love Gold. But I don't feel it like I used to. Yesterday, I couldn't sing along because I felt like I really had to listen to it to figure out what he meant. I thought flat out "I don't understand"... but I think I was getting tired @ the time (we're at nearly 1 am here), so I need to find a more suitable time to rediscover what it means to me. It'd kinda suck cuz I call it my "soul tattoo" and feel like I have nothing to show for it anymore.

12 albums isn't a great deal when you consider that P has damn near 50 albums at this point. I think I have every album he has made, minus "Karmasutra" which doesn't particularly interest me. And then once you get into the CD singles, it's a whole new world of awesome remixes and alternate versions too! Not to mention one off releases that never made albums.

Well, I want to set a reasonable goal for myself... owning 12 albums of one artist might sound a little ridiculous to some... but its not like I'm going around saying, "I have to get every single thing he's done."
Sure, I'd like to get more and more of his stuff and get to know him better... but I gotta draw a line somewhere.
My collection will be various, but I want to focus on the important things, so it will be concentrated on a few diff. areas.

I wish I just knew more people personally that I understand him. Saying I like him turns heads because he is notorious for being weird... I understand why they would think that, but I wish they'd see him the way I do. These days, I keep in my back of my mind that when he's not onstage, he's very reserved & a bit eccentric (as most geniuses are)... he just expresses himself so openly and people don't want to see all sides of him... I suppose they think it'd be better if he kept those secrets to himself... but having said that, that's very brave of him to put it all out there.

If given the chance, I'd ask him "if your music is so personal, why do you insist on sharing it with the world?" for that reason.

12 albums is not at all unreasonable. There are many artists that I own at least 12 albums of - Tupac, Nirvana (inc. boots since they only had 3 'studio' albums), Nine Inch Nails, Michael Jackson....many many more.

It's not really a great deal especially when it comes to Prince. Most people consider everything up to Lovesexy in 1988 to be absolutely essential, and that alone is 10 albums (including The Black Album)

man, this argument could go on for days. lol

I think I already own more Prince albums than any other artist in my CD collection. The only that comes remotely close is the Backstreet Boys and I own 5 of their albums (including their Greatest Hits).
I think I can handle 12 for right now... if I want to go beyond that, I will... but when that times comes. I gotta take things one step at a time. And I'm really just trying to give myself a little time in between getting more albums. My next purchase will probably come next month, given that my bday is coming up at the end of July... but I have 4 other CD's I want to get before losing myself completely to focusing solely on Prince.

Ah OK. What were you thinking of getting next, if you don't mind me asking?

If I recall, you have 3121, Musicology, ATWIAD, Purple Rain, Gold Experience and Come, correct?

I never mind anyone asking what I plan to get next. Although half the time I really don't know what I say.

And you are correct.

1999 is at the top of my priority list right now. I'm in the mood for a little excitement... something up-beat... plus its pure 80's, so of course its essiential.
Emancipation, I've been looking at for a while... but right now, I have no real motivation to get it other than the fact that it might be hard to find.
I'm interested in prince also because it comes before Come and it kinda starts his era under a different name (for obvious reasons).

But Dirty Mind & Controversy might be the next time I get... everyone keeps saying how DM is one of his best... and someone recommended I get Controversy b4 1999 to prep me for it, I guess.

I'll have to see, though. I change my mind a lot depending on the mood I'm in.

oh yeah, and Parade I've had my eye on for a little while too. just remembered.

omg u HAVE to get 1999. its awesome and one of his best. i'm listening to it right now coincidentally (sp?). it definetly fits the bill of exciting and upbeat, and its sound is pure 80s.

And I do love 80's music... I mean, it's essiential.
lol lol I think I'll be getting lectures from a lot of diff. people on what's essiential in a collection of Prince albums.
A lot of people'll tell me that I need to get his first albums.
Soft & Wet, I've heard a bunch of diff. versions of and like it. But I also want my collection to be very Prince-esque, so I'm not so much interested in the first 2 albums where he was being compared to Stevie Wonder & such.

Dirty Mind set him apart from the other artists at his time... even though the material might be a little too risque for my tastes, anything's worth a shot, I suppose.

My interest in getting Diamonds & Pearls and Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic has waned over time cuz I really have no motivation of getting them. They'll have to wait if I get them at all.

The top albums on my priority list right now include 1999, Parade, Controversy, Dirty Mind, and Emancipation.

You guys are full of so much advice that I could always use. And my decisions are aided by our conversations here.

And most likely, there will be a huge gap between Musicology and another album I own that came b4 it... cuz Musicology was known as his "comeback" by the general public. If anything, Rave might be the closest album I have to it that came b4 it.

But I've started a few interesting "trips" for myself. Come/TGE is an example of the transition from Prince to prince... so I need to get a few more albums from that area. PR/ATIWAD is also a great trip I've started... Parade will definitely come and SOTT will come miles down the road, most likely.

And if anyone wants to discuss this, message me or wait until I start up another "what should I get next" topic. Cuz I set this topic up with a diff. idea in mind.

i dont even speak to people about prince who have no PQ (prince IQ) cus theres never enough time to educate them on how talented the brotha is. i've also found that most people in the dark about him (just his talent, they dont have to be purplenecks) are usually followers who let the media tell them who a person is. prince led me to understand and appreciate the genuis in others like Miles and Jay Z .

Welcome! You're gonna love it here.
You already know I do cuz I made up this thread.

There are a lot of "the best things" about this site. It's good to be among people that know what they're talking about (know considerably more about him than I do) and they know exactly what I'm talking about.
When I first got here, I thought Prince was the coolest thing ever and I just had to tell somebody about why I like him so much. The list could go on and on.

But to me, he's more than just another musical artist that I listen to. I keep him in mind whenever I listen because everything he sings came from inside him.

Welcome as well.

When I got here, I just went to topics that I felt like I could contribute to... like what I already thought about Prince as a person and generally as a musician.
At my time of signing up, I didn't own any of his albums and I've only heard a couple of his songs (Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, I would die 4 u and Baby I'm a star)... and it's good to voice my opinions about my albums... and also get advice on albums I want to get or should get.

I like making my own decisions, but they are "aided" by the many friends I've made here... and I think being here helped me blossom into a better "fan" because I'm among people that know him better than the general public.

And there are probably certain things that I'd rather not say out loud... and I come here for such reasons.

I think Come is a brilliant album (and TGE)... but I really can't talk about or play them w/o having to deal with a bunch of questions or lectures.
I'd like to talk about them, sure... but I don't want to be lectured in what he's really talking about when he talks about "certain things"... I think I know enough to have the basic idea... coming here avoids that kind of awkwardness and judgement.

Here, I can be completely honest with my beliefs and not have to deal with too much critisms

And actually I do... I just don't do much cuz I'm spending too much time trying to figure out what every little thing he says means... mostly to him.
