Songs for the closing of an old millennium

I had my iPod on shuffle the other day; and "Blue Light" came on. Suddenly I was transported back to 1993. I could clearly remember attending three consecutive nights of the "Act I" concert and loving every moment of it. "Blue Light" sounded good; but at the same time it sounded like a bit of a swan song to me. Now, I'm not saying it sounded like some sort of masterpiece that one could gracefully end his career upon; but it was just enough where one COULD HAVE bowed out gracefully.

There were many times in the mid 90's when I thought, "This is it for Prince; it's all over". I look back at pictures of him from 94-97 and he looks so thin and unhappy. I guess the stress of his battles with Warner Brothers really took it's toll on him. I've recently labeled the music from that era as "Songs for the closing of an old millennium". Who would have thought that Prince would have endured all these years in the biz?

Today, we have a happy and healthy looking Prince; putting his best foot forward with the music he creates and SHARES with us. I guess the whole point of my article today is: just to say "THANK YOU PRINCE". You have to admit, that we, as Prince fans, are some of the most demanding, and ungrateful fans there are out there. Nothing he ever does lately is good enough. And thanks to the wonderful medium of the Internet (and this site) we're constantly able to voice our opinions, and bitch and moan about every little "The Ladder" that Prince has ever released. So every song IS NOT going to be a hit. Every song is not gonna be a form of mass hypnosis that just gets everyone into a groove. So what? Prince is only human, and secondly, he's an artist. We as fans need to learn to be more appreciative. And if we truly are the supportive fans that we say we are - we need to learn to grow and experiment WITH this artist.

So, To Prince; on your 49th Birthday - I say THANK YOU for all the gifts that you've shared with us. Even, "The Songs for the closing of an old millennium".

Yeah, must have been tough, poor guy. The $100 million contract probably helped, though.

Prince DID NOT get that money. It was Promised to him and then revoked. Remember he was also given a VP title and Warner Brothers? None of those promises were kept.

The promises were kept. He just fucked them up.

See what I mean? People still wanna take props away from the man no matter what. Who cares about how much money he has. He STILL could have quit the biz in the 90's. Glad he didn't.

He also could have quit in 2001 at the start of the new millenium when he released The Rainbow Children and his legacy would have been intact. That was about as close to a masterpiece as one could get, and it was definitely the most uncompromising effort he had since Lovesexy.

The only problem would have been having The Wedding Feast on his final album but, hey, nobody's perfect wink

Record contracts are much more complicated than that, with advances being handed out with the promise to deliver the album.

As for Prince, he pissed away that money promoting Carmen Electra for a year, and then delaying the album a couple of times, and it flopping. He spent it making videos for songs that weren't intended for release. He spent it on ridiculous stage designs. Wasted it on crappy Paisley Park albums. Etc.
