Lovesexy Album Cover: One of the Greatest Of All Time?

It's been argued for years whether the nude pose of Prince's 1988 Lovesexy album was a stroke of genius, or a stroke of madness and bad taste? Prince himself even questioned if the album cover was a mistake in the 1990 song "Thunder". But now, AOL's Black voices has included "Lovesexy" in a list of "Best album covers of all time". http://blackvoices.aol.co...llery-poll Personally; I give Prince props for this bold move, and I actually get the whole REBIRTH thing he was trying to convey.

This album cover embarrassed me when I first saw it, and turned me off to Prince for a few years. Don't ask me why, it just looked really lame to me.

The album cover definitely made a lot of eyes roll in my circle of friends and family. And I can relate, but I also have a much deeper appreciation of him so the cover didn't bother me. His quirkiness is part of my attraction to him.

I was 12 when I walked into the local "Warehouse" recca stow to purchase Lovesexy and I had a feeling that up to that point I hadn't felt before.

Now that I am an adult I have a name for that feeling. It's called "the feeling I feel whenever I buy porn".

I loved that he challenged his audience. Maybe I've been a fan too long but it seems like that is missing from him now.

This album cover is awesome and it shows true originality, it suited the music perfectly and lo and behold, the record stores here didn't hide it under the counter!

The cover was a metaphor for the music, which (arguably) featured Prince at his freest and most relaxed. Ironically, it was a factor in the album not going platinum. He was clowned on black radio for it.

When I bought it as a 17 year-old kid, it was HARD for a young brother to take it up to the counter.

I feel like the back cover was cooler than the cover itself.

It's said that Prince got the idea from Rolling stone Magazine cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono Jan. 22, 1981

I think the lyrics are:

Love's kiss was running all thru my veins
The bed started shakin', I don't know who to blame
Me or this flower right in front of my eyes
Is this my sweet savior or the devil in disguise

I could be wrong, but if that touches on the Lovesexy album, couldn't that more accurately describe the vision that precipitated the recording of the album, as opposed to the decision on the album cover itself? I don't see how that is a reference of regret for anything.

Right, that's what I'm thinking. The song is about a spiritual revelation. I don't really believe Thunder references Lovesexy.

I get what he was trying to express but IMO he missed the mark and I wasn't impressed. The nudity is not a problem but the pose is cheesy and his facial expression reminds me of someone on thorazine.

Utterly dreadful... disbelief
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Although I may have misquoted the lyric - a RUMOR floated around, at the time, that alot of people were saying that the Filament and Anther of the flower looked like a penis aimed right at Prince's mouth. Which led to THE RUMOR that Prince actually regretted taking the pic, not because he was nude, but because it was misinterpreted.

Interesting, well many people did misinterpret the cover. But it never really bothered me. It's Prince. I mean I don't pull out the cover for people-- but ya know. cool

It's one of his most famous and iconic covers of all time, even the Lovesexy detractors have to admit it...
