At some point or other, I've heard so many people here talk about this song. Or at least they used to. I've heard the name several times. I've listened to it recently and fell in love with it the first time I heard it.

Is this one of Prince's most famous songs (even though it was never officially released)? Or is it more "infamous"?

It's remarkable, isn't it???

You bet!

It's the most extraordinary thing I've heard in a while (which is kinda weird, considering he's an extraordinary person)...
but I don't think I've heard anything in a while that sounded this close to his soul. Or from the depths of his heart. That's what I feel seperates him from everyone I've checked into before.

don't call me a fan. giggle that's Prince rubbing off on me.

I consider myself a quick learner, but a lot of my prior knowledge did come from my intuition about him after seeing "Purple Rain" (2nd hour only). There's still a lot I don't know about him, his music... and how to listen to it "properly", I guess you could say.
But he has helped me along the way and I'm glad I've had this site to grow as a person and as a "fan".

It was at one point going to be included on the 1988 unreleased album Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic, in revamped form I believe.

It has also been rumored that it was going to be included on about the last 6 or 7 albums.

I can confirm that it is on Planet Earth, revamped with a killer guitar solo.

My source for this info is a guy called Tom Ato he works for Sony in the catering deptartment and got a sneal preview of the new album last night.

Would love to see him revisit this if he ever decided to record with Wendy and Lisa again.
I think it would work great with Go, Splash, Roadhouse Garden, There's Others here with us and anything else from that 1983-1986 era, along with some newly written material possibly.
It's far fetched and not where Prince is right now, but I would love it.

just listened to it again today.

Actually, I gave myself a pretty good Prince fix... felt like I haven't done so in days.

It definitely sounds like he was influenced by one of those huge rock bands like Queen at the time... cuz I get the same vibes when I listen to the chorus.

Talk about a good rock ballad.
If this were released officially on the 1999 album, it probably have defined his sound and what he's capable of. Not that it'd be his defining moment like the "Purple Rain" project was... but I think it had that ground-breaking potential.

I think it's one one P's best unreleased songs. I think because it sounded too similar to Free, he didn't put it on the 1999 album. Could have put it as a b-side. Hey Dreamy, good ears. Queen was an influence on P.

yes, I have.
It took a couple of listens for me to get into it, but I do like it. I don't think it belonged on the soundtrack in place of "The Beautiful Ones", though.
Based on the title, I thought it was gonna be a heavy rock type of song, but its the exact opposite. And I did get into it quite a bit.

Glad you like it, it's one of my three favorite outtakes, next to "Xtra Loveable" and "Wonderful Ass".

I kinda understand why this song didn't make it to the final 1999 cut.

The main theme from the album is 'lust'. It would sound outta place in there,,,,I agree though, great song.

It took me a long time to appreciate it though.

I always thought this song sounded like David Bowie (especially Life on Mars) this is probably why he didnt release it.

yeah, I wouldn't know. I don't know what David Bowie really sounds like... I just know that he's been lumped up in the "weirdo musician" category... and I kinda think of him as weird... but that's cuz I don't know him too well yet.

Well I know David Bowie is not to everyone´s taste on this site, but I rate him highly. I dont know if he influenced Prince, but I see a similarity with Life on Mars for sure.

I think Life on Mars is a great song and you dont have to be a Bowie fan to enjoy it, it just stands up on its own. If you ever get a chance, have a listen to it...

I think I posted this before but here it is again:

After some time in Minneapolis, Prince returned to studio 2 at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. With him were a number of tracks he had worked on over the past month. It had been a busy time with him wrapping up work on an album by The Time, the Vanity 6 album as well as his first double album, 1999. On Tuesday, July 6, 1982, Prince went back into the studio for a little over a week to tweak a few of those jams and flesh out some additional ideas. The first day belonged to “Moonbeam Levels”. The session began at 6:30 PM with Peggy Mac back engineering (in Minneapolis, Don Batts engineered much of his home recording during this period). The next 7 hours were a live jam, but as far as I know, the song was NOT tracked on this day. I think it was started back in MPLS.

That is from the book "Prince: The Studio Sessions". Hope that clears up it's origin a little bit.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
