I've also really grown to love Musicology over the last couple years - I definitely appreciate the songwriting craf and Prince's intentions with the record.

As Dreampop put it, it doesn't sound particularly Prince-esque, which may be the reason I didn't like it initially.

Interestingly, 3121 sounds like Prince trying to create a Prince-esque record and not succeeding at all to my ears - I'll take the "unPrincely" Musicology in a second over 3121's bland tunes.
I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

Go out and enjoy your Prince experence for yourself and not through the prism of the wannabe music critics on the org. Every Prince album is an experence that should be savored like a fine wine.

It is so funny to listen to this generation of fans diss the music and "praise" classics like Lovesexy, Come , TGE . The so called critics of that time dissed those albums like you all diss Musiclogy and 3121. In my 10 years of being around the ORG it has only been in the last 5 years where you hear of TGE being a masterpiece. In 5 or 10 years people will be praising Musiclogy, 3121, and Planet Earth as classics.

Believe it or not you do not need another persons approval to like Prince's music.

Musicology is a great album.Didn't know so many of u guyz liked it! wink Cool.

It really signaled his reemergence into the popular culture, but that's not why I love it (although it was kind of gratifying to see critics falling over themselves to offer Prince props after years of acting as though he were a joke). Plus, I'm really proud of him for using what was his most commercially accessible album in years as a forum to denounce Bush and the war, at a time when artists were losing airplay and sales for doing so.

i am proud of Prince too. It isn't easy to express an opinion when it pertains to Politics or Religion because there is always some person that will disagree with you or not understand the other person's viewpoint. i'm proud that we stood up to the enemy.

heh, I've always followed that rule... but I do take the advice of others every now and then... they do know what they're talking about when an album is supposedly really good (TGE).
I've been considering Dirty Mind more cuz of what people keep saying about it.

And I am in this for myself... I got Musicology & 3121 even though people have been like "they're not on anyone's top 10 list"... and I love Musicology.

It's weird, thu. Cuz when I started listening to it for the first time, I was thinking "this doesn't sound like Prince at all"... and I do agree that it's "safe" compared to w/e came before it... but I'm not concerned with what's safe and what isn't... I want my collection to represent Prince the best it can and also shape the way I perceive him to be. Dirty Mind might throw me for a loop when I get it, but that was a part of him at one time... its unavoidable

I have been a Prince fan since 1999 and outside of the Dirty Mind-Lovesexy period many fans seem to disagree on what is great.

I did not fall in love with SOTT until a month after I bought it (Apr/May 87).Then I could not put it down until the mid 1990's. I hated Lovesexy until 1992. It was released in May 1988.Come was collecting dust on my music shelf until a year ago.Now it's in the rotation.

My advice to you is to follow your own ear and don't get put off at the first impression of the album.

I love Musicology- the songs are so great, relevant to today and a taste of "old school" at the same time. The videos for the singles are great, and I totally connected w/ Cinnamon Gril- since i'm half-asian. LOVE this album. and the intro when u open the CD is pretty cool too. cool

Musicology is a basically a nearly forgettable Prince album. I put it up there with Chaos and Disorder although C&D is better.

Actually, I do agree with that cuz I checked it out after letting it collect dust for a few months.
When I really got into it the first time (it being about what "real music" sounds like), I loved it... so much that I let it sit for a while because I didn't want it to get too old too soon. But I felt like why listening to it, Prince could teach me so much about music... and I like letting him teach a few things I wouldn't know otherwise.

This morning, I had various songs in my head (Call my Name, Cinnamon Girl)... and I'll admit that this album is kind of an outsider in my collection cuz I don't recall the songs off the top of my head all that often. It'll hold a special place for me because it was the first one I bought.
