It is a better album becuz of the fact it makes sense, the music flows and does not sound like it is in between (like stuck in the middle of Dirty Mind and 1999) Becuz the besides were of high quality, becuz the art design is WAY cooler, becuz it ain't got stupid songs on it like Ronnie, and even if the songs are stupid (like Tamborine, well it is) they are at least damn fonky. The B-Sides do rock, but the album itself is weighbed down a bit by its opener and closer. It's sad though, as I love this album. Am I the only one here who adores "Ronnie Talk to Russia?" Ronnie and Annie ruin an otherwise great album for me  Should have been Tick Tick Bang and Lisa.

Actually, the latter couple would be a great choice for that album to replace Ronnie and Annie Do you remember "Annie Christian" live, and how much it rocked? I adore that song, but it took me a while to warm up to it as well. I've always loved "Ronnie" though. Just the strange taste that is my own, I suppose. I do remember. The live version was very good. If the album track had been more like it, I could probably hold the album in higher regard. | |

Controversy has gots 2 go ! 
Okay,so the bassline 2 Let's Work is a classic (AWESOMELY slinky/funky!), Do Me, Baby is 1 of his sweetest,most enduring ballads & the title track has that winning vibe of almost inhuman sounding music (somewhat akin 2 the production of its predecessor, Dirty Mind, which i still feel is probably his punchiest album) but asides from that i rarely give it a spin. "Ronnie Talk 2 Russia"? Do me a sodding favour!  As if Reagan was going 2 pay a blind bit of attention 2 a man in high heels & suspenders ! (Well, maybe if he was pointing a gun at him). | |

ian, I like "Ronnie" also... I'm starting to think that all the people who don't like it are judging it wrongly just just because it mentions Reagan. I used to dance like crazy to this tune!! Too short. And "Annie" is cool in that it is SO different from any other song Prince had written up to that point. I used to put that one on repeat, which wasn't easy considering I had to walk over to the record player and reset the needle each time. Controversy has songs to fit almost any mood. I put many of them on "repeat" at various points in my life. It is WAY too early for this album to drop off the list. | |

The lyrics DEFINITELY don't help! And yes, lyrics r HUGELY  important.

Funny, I think ATWIAD has got wonderful lyrics and fascinating instrumentation. From the first baby gurgle Prince utters to that final death gurgle in Temptation, the album seems to have this pounding heartbeat throughout, whereas Controversy is a machine that is just not quite oiled yet...I call it a wanna be 1999. Maybe ATWIAD is a wannabe Parade, but is just makes way more sense to me. Also that snippet of melody after "say papa, I think I wanna dance!" is so groovy it hurts. (sample some of dis) I must admit that the two songs I did not like, but that grew on me were also Temptation and then Condition Of The Heart. Temptation has this piano at the end that just kills me everytime I hear it... Oh well, can't have them all... | |

Gooey, I love that song also. It was trip bringing that album home on the first day of release and playing it on my record player. I'll never forget the feeling the whole album had for me that day... so different from what I had expected.
Dorian, so yeah, I can understand your feelings for it. I just need to respect the different reasons we all choose to like something. Controversy was one of those special days for me also. I sat there for the whole day playing the entire album over and over and over again! Ha, when I played the last song I remember my mother saying, "I know what that song's about!" I kept the volume down on that one from there on out.  | |
