I really think the fact that he was playing more organic music on that album, and the use of a great drummer (John Blackwell) is overshadowing the lack of good songwriting and compositions on The Rainbow Children. Next to that the lyrics on The Rainbow Children are toecurlingy bad, and irritating towards everyone with some common sense. They makes this album almost unbearingly to listen to IMO. Sorry to say, for me The Rainbow Children wasn't an improvement over New Power Soul and Rave. It was different, sure, but personally my respect for Prince as a musician and lyricist was at an all time low point when he released that album. I see Musicology and 3121 as a slight improvement. Personnally, TRC is in my Prince top 4. It is the album I did not expect anymore from Prince. In terms of musicianship, I would even say it is his best effort to date. Everything is great on this cd : the musical "texture", the musicianship, the complexity and sophistication of most compositions, the flow, the voices, the arrangements and the amazing John Blackwell. TRC was a new road for Prince, showing that he could renew himself without picking in his past tricks. NPS and Rave were very average cds (I thought Rave was so bad I smashed the CD after a few listens !). Musicology was ok. 3121 was pretty good. But I think there are fans who like the "mainstream" prince and those who like the adventurous one. That's the last one I'm really interested in. TRC is a masterpiece. I don't even care about the vocoder. I really dig it in fact. And regarding the religious aspects, I don't give a flying fuck. [Edited 6/22/07 5:15am] It seems Riverpoet is seriously out-numbered here small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

That was a great observation and distinction sark; the mainstream Prince and the adventurous Prince covers all the bases. When people say, "This song sucks or that song sucks" what they are really saying is, "I like my Prince songs predictable and in a certain style." Personally, I like everything Prince has ever done except for most of Chaos and Disorder, but that's only becasue I don't like hard rock guitar in general. But the great thing about Prince is there will always be something for everyone, he's so prolific and creative. "I like country music too..." Single #2: Somewhere Here On Earth Single #3: The One U Wanna C Single #4: Future Baby Mama Your picks? Are "Somewhere Here On Earth" and "Somewhere" not the same songs. I am assuming that they are, but am not sure. Is "Somewhere" not the b-side to "Guitar." I agree with your single choice #3 "The One U Wanna C" but would add "Chelsea Rogers" as a probable single. Also, nobody is talking about the title track. We know the lyrics. I wouldn't be surprised to see it as a possible 3rd single. I've got a guitar that can part the sea.

Ten fucking songs? What a waste. All you others say Hell Yea!!

But what if those songs comprise a suite similar to Lovesexy or if they're each 7 minutes long?
I'm OK with only ten if they're all killer.

Cute one, Nikkie! It's fun to pass the time waiting for the release date to come by speculating, isn't it? The more I think about the album title and and track titles I suspect that this will be P's social activist statement- you know, global warming, world hunger and other moral dillemmas as the subject matter. In that context, Resolution and especially as the closing song title, makes sense to me. Lots of P's past work after he became a JW has hinted at revelation. Now it's time to take action- bring the dillemmas to resolve; hence Resolution. And hey, to the fam who was complaining about the miserly amount of music on this disc- if there are only 10 tracks listed maybe there will be some hidden tracks to take up the slack; wouldn't that be cool? I guess the initial track lengths were wrong with the 6 and 7 minute songs reported. I liked the idea of a longer version of "Guitar" than what is being promoted on radio and video. Oh well.

I bet you didn't say "9 fucking songs? What a waste" when Purple Rain came out or better yet, Dirty Mind with its 8 songs clocking in at 33 minutes. "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

I'm all for a shorter album if every track is solid and no filler, but after having heard Future Baby Mama and Guitar, 20% of the album is average at best. And from the reviews, there's likely to be more sub-par material, especially in the middle of the record.
I think Prince is at the point where he can still put out a few great tracks on any given album, but even a 10 song lp is going to be padded with fluff. I heard the new Paul McCartney record yesterday and was blown away at how fresh it sounded. Hopefully Prince can recapture some studio magic in his 60's. [Edited 6/26/07 23:19pm] No hard feelings.

Heard it. It is a nice tune. I'm not always a fan of Prince ballads but I really dig the sophistication of the production. A lot is happening underneath the voice layers.
The melody is infectious. Grower.
