Wonderwall

Strange Relationship

Private Joy

Play In The Sunshine

Anna Stesia

Adore

Girls & Boys (this got more airplay in Chicago than Mountains...I thought it WAS the 2nd single til I saw Mountains single in the stow).

Billy Jack Bitch...no question would've been a hit.

Sleep Around

In This Bed I Scream

And God Created Woman

17 Days as a single and not a B-Side would have been just as big as When Doves Cry IMO

My picks (i only choose songs that were never released a a single):

* I Feel for you: the most catchy track on that album after I wanne be your lover.

* When you were mine: a classic Prince song, strange that they didnt release it as a single.

* Private Joy: indeed a very commercial sounding, catchy track.

* 17 days: a b-side with the quality of some of his best tracks

* New Position: minimalistic funk in the line of Kiss, the album version is a bit short, so maybe he could have extended it.

* Sometimes it snows in april: its just a beautifull balad, and also the kind of song People arent expecting from Prince.

* The Cross: this was a big fan favourite in Europe in 1987, the anthemlike caracther could have people remind of Purple Rain

* Hot Thing: Catchy, sharp funk-rock, should have been released after U got the look, instead of the bleak demo-sounding version of I could never take the place of your man.

* Annastesia: it could have flopped maybe, but also have been a great hit (but maybe the god=love part is TOO much for the casual listener).

* Electric Chair: instead of Scandalous.

* Question of You: just like when you were mine, another classic Prince track that has never been released as a single.

* Still would stand all time: another anthemlike ballad, that could have done well with the people who loved Purple Rain.

* Willing and able: a nice catchy, swinging track, but again the songs that were allready released as a single all screamed 'single' themselves.

* The Continental: Not my personal favourite, but it could have done well.

* Billy Jack Bitch: a favourite with the DJ's when Gold was released, definitely a potential single (and dancefloor material)

* I like it there: could have been a minor hit.

* Emancipation had some catchy, polished singlematerial like: Jam of the Year, Style and New World to name a few. He should have marketed this set a lot better.

* From the Crystal Ball set: Hide the Bone is shamelesly catchy pop-funk, could have been a top 10-hit.

* Man'o' war (maybe a bit too long) and I love you but i dont trust you anymore are quality-ballads from an otherwise stalled, mediocre album. Especially the second song could have been a surprise hit.

* Five Women from The vault could have been a minor hit: its a catchy blues-pop song in the vein of Robert Cray (who also scored hits with that kind of material)

* The big mistake Prince has made with marketing 3121 IMO is NOT releasing Love as a single. That song, accompanied with a good video, could have been huge.

I agree w/ most of those, my only thing with "17 Days" is - what would it have replaced? There were no weak links on "Purple Rain", and that album already had 5 singles. And I would think "Baby I'm a Star" would be a single before "17 Days."

And you are sooooo right on "Emancipation." He doomed what should have been a huge project by releasing "Betcha By Golly Wow!" as his first big single after the WB breakup. What was he thinking?!?!? sad He was trying to re-create the magic of "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", I guess....

He would have been much better off with "New World," or "Sleep Around," or "Damned if I Do" or probably a dozen others.

And I totally agree on "New Position" - it would have been hot on the radio. Maybe re-record it for a single mix, a little bit longer.... would've been a great single. I'd have done Parade as follows: 1. Kiss, 2. Girls & Boys, 3. Anotherloverholenyohead, 4. New Position (remix). I love Mountains (and I adore the 12"), but it seems like an album track to me.

Although "Hot Thing" was a very good song, it was eventually released as a single unlike "Adore". "Adore", a love song that everybody from here to eternity likes, was probably the biggest miss of all time. Think about it! I hear "Adore" played all the time on late night stations (radio) and that's pretty amazing for a song not released as a single. It would've definitely hit #1 or top 5 at least. Another missed hit I think is "Live For Love". This is probably one of the greatest songs to end an album with. I was hoping this song will be released but instead we got "Willing and Able". Not that it's a bad saong but just Live is much better. Let's go way back. "Sexy Dancer" was a huge miss. It was released as a 12' single but somehow miss hitting that mark. Finally, the last song I think that was overlooked was "The Beautiful Ones". Almost the whole Purple Rain album had a single released and you would've thought this was the sure fire one. I guess not, Prince nor WB released it and it was a powerful song and had an important mark in the movie. Execs, what do they know anyway. Hollar!

Crucial - defintely (Did he even release singles when he finally released Crystal Ball?)

The One - edited

Any song from 1999 that wasn't a single. It's that consistent and that good.

When U were Mine

I Hate U

Shh
Somebody's Somebody (was this a single?)

Strange Relationship

Not on topic, but if he would have recorded a Prince-ish version of Manic Monday (which he gave to the Bangles) and of Uncle Sam (which he gave to Tevin Campbell), they would have been huge. Obviously, Manic Monday was huge anyway.

I definitely agree w/Shh... I would have loved to have had that played as much as they played & played... & played Tevin Campell's version. rolleyes

Another one that I always felt was a huge missed opportunity: "Dance On."

Imagine it as the first single from "Lovesexy".... I think it would have done much better than "Alphabet St."

Gotta disagree with you there lol "Dance On" wouldn't have worked as a single. It's too erratic and not really danceable.

His first big miss was he should have put I feel 4 U out after I wanna be your lover, but he put out Why u wanna treat me so bad, which bombed, its a good song but I think confused a lot of the audience that bought lover. I feel 4 u is a great boppy floor filler and happy happy dance music, it would have gone Top20 at least. Then he should have dropped Sexy dancer that would have hit too with Bambi as a B side I think.

Next big miss, when u were mine as opposed to Uptown (they didnt get it) when u were mine is a catchy and weepy ballad.

Lets work should have been first single of Controversy.

Pretty happy with single choices of the next 3 albums

I agree Girls and Boys should have followed kiss into the charts

Definitely Adore after S.O.T, then happy with rest U got the look onwards.

Lovesexy after Alphabet street and Annastesia not much hit material there

Grafitti Bridge definitley Cant stop as first single, then Thieves in the Temple

Next two albums, ok maybe seven b 4 Sexy MF

Come and Gold Experience Ok

Chaos and Disorder no real hit material there

Emancipation, One of us and Eye can't make u love, sex in the summer as an R and b single

Rest of the albums, not really much single material there, he became more of an album act then.

"Illusion Coma..." instead of ballads

"3121" with a sureeal concept party video or "Lolita" with some upcoming model. Fury is very boring as far as mass excitement appeal in my opinion.

As far as "Housequake" Prince has a record of believing songs are too cool to be an a-side single, especially the wicked dance ones. Irrisistible Bitch, Erotic City, Housequake, P-control... etc. And he went even further underground cool with the non release of "Days of Wild"

I think "Now" would have hit if pushed by the record company.

all I can say is when I had a mass of friends that are not prince fans listen by chance, these tracks were deemed cool for such an "uncool" artist.

I think Take Me With U is the weakest track on Purple Rain by quite a long stretch but despite its catchy appeal I think Erotic City would have made a better replacement than 17 Days on the album. 17 Days would've been a good choice for a single as it suits repeated air play where people barely listen to tunes or are busy doing something elce while listening to the radio but it's too repetitive to cohesively fit on the album.
