Come vs. TGE

This'll be an ongoing thing for me.
Which is better?

For the first time, this weekend, i listened to them within 12 hours of each other. Come made an impression on me, so I couldnt concentrate much on TGE.

Then I checked into TGE later that day... and i let it take me over, like I always do... I think I really enjoyed Endorphinmachine this time around... usually its a little rough around the edges 4 me, and i dont get into it much.

if i hadnt gotten a little distracted, i think TGE would have completely sucked me in, the way it always did... i kinda miss that feeling.

Anyway, until further notice, ill have the two albums tied at the #1 spot of my album ranks

Hi DPR!
Nice reading your "getting into" these discs, I've always loved them, my fav period. I guess it is inavoidable for you to get Crystal Ball asap biggrin "hosts" it has (a.o. other gems) another great album from that era:
something like this
(they are spread over the 3 orig. cds)
Interactive (3:01)
Days Of Wild (9:18)
Acknowledge Me (5:26)
Ripopgodazippa (4:38)
Love Sign (Remix) (3:52)
Hide The Bone (5:03)
18 & Over (5:40)
The Ride (5:12)
Calhoun Square (4:46)
What's My Name (3:03)
Strays Of The World (5:06)

plus it has remixes P. control (Get) Loose and (So) Dark
and She gave her angels, 2morrow, Goodbye which are from 1995/96 as well

Just my advice reading how much you like Come (sorry, had to biggrin) and TGE
Some of the above songs are amongst my favs, I do love What'S my name and Strays loads (more than most on the orig. albums)

Have fun no matter what you get next

thanx. Most likely I'll fill my collection with quite a few albums prince made. And Crystal ball, that idea's always been up in the air. Considering how that period interest me, its always a definite possibility taht I'll get it. but given the size, i might wait a while. at least until i know Come a little better.

I think they'll be my 2 favorite albums and I'll like one over the other depending on my mood... ill probably change my mind constantly for quite a while.

They work beautifully back to back, but I do think that TGE is the superior album. That is no surprise, given that TGE was the one that he was concentrating on and promoting at the time.

I'm pretty sure that originally, he wanted the two albums to be released a fortnight apart. Come represented the death of 'Prince' and The Gold Experience was to represent the coming of prince.
That idea never happened, but they still work as two parts of the same chapter.

Why does one have to be rated as the best? you got to love the music for what it is, not compare it to another piece of work/art.They ALL have good and bad, if you look close enough, mostly good in my eyes, to be honest!

Don't stress, Just enjoy cool

Come for me, The seques on TGE slow down it's momentum and it tends to be over the top in places. Come, though it widely varies in styles, feels more organic.

I agree. You can just lay back with Come and let it wash over you (no pun intended considering they have ocean waves in their transitions).
TGE is a pain to have to snap out of w/e mood its put u in just to flip thru the trax. The only things I skip are the NPG operators (what was he thinking??) and the song "Now". I'm not too crazy about... it just doesn't fit for me.

I'll probably listen to Come more just becuz TGE is used (as mint as it is), I'd rather not wear it down too much.

And the organics of Come probably made me get more into it. And there's a more personal feel to it that I really like. And I just go crazy over Prince's spoken voice. cool

Let's see, highlights...

For Come: (omg, so many)

Come
Space
Loose!
Letitgo
(I might add Solo 2 the list once I get more of a feel for it)

For TGE:
Shh
Dolphin
Billy Jack (since I "got" it, it never fails to make me biggrin )
Gold (need I say more)

Come is more tight, stronger as a whole. The NPG operators in TGE kinda slow things down. Having to flip thru them is a pain. I guess that's why.

They're really two side of the same coin so it just depends on mood for the most part...

If you want personal, pillow talking Prince then you pop in Come and if you want loud, ego-driven, stadium rocking Prince then you put in TGE.

Come is one of the few Prince albums I can put in and relax to at the end of the day. Most of his albums have a more "excitable" feel that's not conducive to my relaxation. ...but Come and Space just kind of lazily float by in a soothing manner and then Pheromone is hypnotic in nature.

btw, DPR, do you have iTunes?

I don't own an iPOD and I don't think I ever will. It's just something I can't get into or excited about. What can I say? I like doing things the old fashioned way (going to stores & buying CD's rather than doing it online).

I think it's safe to say that Come has earned extra points with me because I just didn't get it at first. TGE took me so long to get into... it was so foreign sounding that I think I had this "fear" of it, so I shelved it for weeks b4 picking it up again.

It's hard really to get excited about it anymore. I feel like I have to really be in the mood for it, not play it cuz I feel I have to. It's very strange...
Here's something funny, though. Endorphinmachine, I can't really get into all that much. But after I couldn't get into TGE (after listening 2 Come 12 hours b4), it kept playing in my head, so I felt like I had to play thru the album again later that day.

And I actually enjoyed it! A lot! that's never happened b4. But I feel like I really need to get in the zone with it. One distraction and the "spell" is broken. It's the kind of album I really want to get lost in and go into another world.
I feel like I trust Prince so much more in Come... it's crazy. But I like what I hear.

Pheromone did hypnotize me the last time I listened... cool it was awesome

Come is more of a chill-album. I don't think you can really dance to it (unless we're talking about Pheromone, Loose! & Race).
I'll rank the songs as such. (I don't count Orgasm as a song, but I still listen 2 it cuz it just works 4 me).
1. Come
2. Letitgo
3. Space
4. Loose!
5. Race
6. Solo
7. Pheromone
8. Papa
9. Dark

TGE has too much filler (NPG's... and Now doesn't fit in, but that's just me).
But it also has many different colors 2 it. With Come, u have to dig a little deeper, but I enjoy digging to get closer to The Truth.

how is there filler on tge?? thats crazy talk!

the npg op's were simple introductions to each songs, seeing as there only about 11 seconds each just ignore them.

it interrupts the flow... flipped thru them annoys me.

I don't use an iPod a lot, though I've owned several. However, you don't need one to use iTunes. When I buy a CD, I import it into iTunes and then put the real CD away to keep it in mind condition. My computer is hooked up to my normal stereo so from that point it's very easy to just call up any album or track I'm inclined to listen to at the time.

It's hard really to get excited about it anymore. I feel like I have to really be in the mood for it, not play it cuz I feel I have to. It's very strange...

Well, Endorphinmachine is one of the tracks that was previously attached to several different versions of Come. In fact, after Prince's final scream on that track you can still here the original musical "hum" that segued into Space.

Pheromone did hypnotize me the last time I listened... cool it was awesome

The NPG Operator stuff is rather annoying, especially later in the album where they are voiced over actual portions of the songs... very tacky.

...and I think We March and Shy both qualify as filler considering what he could have included instead (like Ripopgodazippa).

That said both Come and TGE are great albums.

I love both but I seriously can't get enough of "Space". Especially the maxi-single with the acoustic mix and universal love mix.

It's a very difficult choice but I would go with Come. Space is what tips the balance.
