i think i had this one from first listen but you make an interesting point about the hallway effect it adds to the weirdness of the song check 2:57 where it sounds like he bumped into the mic but he leaves it in the mix adds to the weirdness some more including various odd-notes by that electronic-chime-type synth breathing noises (3:22- inhale and 3:23- two quick exales) extra Linn beats for no particular reason (3:02) he later takes this Linn-experimentation to a new level with PR-era songs also, as you've already stated prince does a lot of multi-tracking with his vocals on this album check out the background vocal of "who... u r" at 3:17 the lead "who u r" at 3:18 followed by another background "who u r" at 3:19 this predates the "forever in my life" bgvox experimentation and he doesn't really seem to care if we understand all the words or not for example, in this song, he may be saying all kinds of things in the background but as long as it matches up with the lead vocal, it's hard to separate it note on "little red corvette" at 2:08 where one prince vocal says "a body like urs ought 2 be in jail" and another prince vocal (using a different rhythmic style) says "a body like urs ought 2 be in chains" both words landing on top of each other: "jail/chains" which one do YOU sing along with?

But that was P's backup safer word and the loudest of the two. P wanted a hit and didn't want to blow it cuz of some bondage vibe. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. OH My Prince!!!
I always thought he said "Bet you think your special, well so do I". damn one word off and it has new meaning. I was 9 years old when that album came out and when i first heard it.. at 9 you don't pick up on the nasty words as clearly and kind of just stuck with it all these eyars LOL

Definately! If I play this for people and they look at me like I'M crazy when he screams, I know they are not gonna like Prince's stuff. This one was an easy one to hear though, I guessed everyone knew this one - keep the threads coming! [Edited 6/6/07 2:12am]

blackguitaristz said: Here's yet another thread regarding my favorite Prince album of all time, 1999. This time, the song is "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute). Weird ass song. The weirdest on the album. So keeping in theme with the other two 1999 threads, "Free" and "All The Critics", I'm highlighting where Prince curses in a song and in some form or another, he "shadows" it or "disguises" it. In "Something In The Water" at precisely 2:49, P, says again, the word "Bitch". Just like he does in "All The Critics". Here he "masks" it with putting a hallway echo on the word. To the point where a casual listen, u won't make out what he says. This is the third song that comes from this album where he uses this word. Well, "I. Bitch" doesn't really count since it was a b-side to "Let's Pretend". Now "Let's Pretend" has a gang of cursing, especially towards and at the end. In that song, Prince manages to mention "that he's in love with God" and a serious curse word all in one phrase. Blasphemy in a funk pop song by a black artist was definately something new. That's one thing from P I wasn't and still isn't cool with. Anyway, getting back on track with the song "Something In The Water", has anyone else ever notice where P just blurts out the word "bitch"?
In contrast to the other two songs I actually love SITW. I'll take a listen to it again. Because as usual what you point out here is not something I've thought about.

Ok, I listened to it and this time it's so obvious, even I can hear it. I'm not sure why you bring this up though because he's not making any secret of it. Despite the echo you can hear it loud and clearly so it's nothing hidden, is it.

No, it's nothing hidden on this song. I bring it up, like what I wrote on the thread. I'm simply doing a series of threads revolving around the 1999 album and P's cursing and where it's placed in various songs on that album. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Yeah, that song sounds like it belongs in Computer Blue's chronicles... and yes, that pun was intended. I couldn't help that.
So Prince wants to refer to himself as a computer, fine... the song shows when Computer Blue is in a better mood, whereas the latter is when things definitely don't compute for him. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

This song is what made me wanna buy the album. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Yeah...I'm always telling folks that P was a VERY spooky cat. He had a very spooky element about him. Not anymore. He hasn't had that since UTCM and Parade. He was so happy that he had become famous that he let go of all of that. But I think it was the combination of his rage, anger and his serious desire to have something to prove that he was gifted as a hell, that drove his best work, i.e., his 1999 album. He tried to regain that "edge" somewhere in late 86, early 87, which begat The Black Album. Which was a straight crime that P didn't release that album. Cuz baby, Warner's sure in the hell wanted too. Cuz thy knew that album would have sold through the roof. What happened with P's state of mind is interesting. It was like he needed to prove that he could still do that hardcore, rough, crazed, thuggish type funk/rock shit, ala parts of 1999 and parts of the Black Album. Then once he saw he could do it, then go with an uneven album like Lovesexy. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
