There's probably a good reason for that,She married another man who was abusive to Prince and so he left home but his mom never seemed to care, he once said she introduced him to Playboy magazines when he was a kid.

It use to be on HQ before they took all the videos off. She let Prince live in somebody else's basement and chose her second husband over Prince. Did you hear that he use to get so hungry that he would stand outside of McDonalds just to smell the hamburgers?! A child should always have a mom that will at least feed him sad

yeah, I read that also. the stepfather and Prince had a tension filled relationship when Prince got to be a teenager. Prince moved in with his dad, but got kicked out when he found out that Prince was having sex with girls in the dad's home.
So prince moved in with Andre Anderson (aka Andre Cymone).
He also spent some time with Susan from V6/A6... his high school sweetheart.

EDIT
I mean he lived with Susan for a spell.

But I get the feeling that when Prince became an adult, he and his mom put aside his differences.
He took care of her, paid for her hair dresser etc. during the PR days etc.

She was a guest of honor at the PR premier.

I don't usually psychoanalyze but I watched his performance of Reflections with Wendy on the Tavis Smiley show and these lines from the song seemed very personal...

Read it here on the org,
autobiographies.... etc.

the hair dresser story, read about here on the org by someone who lived in Minnie and knew people who went to the same hairdresser when his mom was alive.

The PR premiere... I read about here on the org... his mom made a comment about how there were so many people at the premiere.. like she was in awe that "Skipper" had made a movie that a lot of celebrities types were going to.

The kids whose house he crashed at was read from the "Possessed" autobiography

his dad gave him that name from what I heard. It was his group "The Prince Rogers Trio"... a jazz ensemble.

I have also read that Prince's father wanted his son named after his band.

Now we may both be right here... Prince's father tells his wife I want the boy to be named prince... and the mother complies and puts the name on the birth certificate because the mother is traditionally the one who fills those forms in the hospital...
so, who named him? shrug

Really though, I doubt that it was exactly like that. His cousin said in an interview that he and his mother argued a lot. And he did not get along with his step dad. Prince's dad threw him out, and would not let him come back so he ended up first at an aunt's house but then in Andre's basement. And I think it had a lot to do with Prince being kinda anti-authority and having that "nobody can tell me what to do" attitude. Clearly Andre's mom was more lenient than his own relatives. I highly doubt that Prince was starving ever or treated as creully as he claimed and allowed fans and the press to believe. It isn't like he was homeless or something but he was expected to obey rules.

nod

that is my take too.
We are looking at this with hindsight... Prince is now this musical genius who needed to be nutured to allow his talent to grow so that he can later rock us all. rolleyes
but to his parent he was a hard headed kid who bang on the instruments a lot, and didn't obey the rules... you know "smelling his own piss".

Well today a lot of parents would trade a son that did the things that Prince did which seem normal for a kid growing up. Show business people have never had the reputation of being the best of parents, sounds like nobody took the time to try to understand him but look how he turned out so many teenage boys wind up in prison and on drugs. Emotionally he probably raised himself no wonder he seems strange sometimes confused

I got to say something about this. Some times a kid smelling his own piss is just that.
If he was challenging the authority of his stepfather... his mom and stepfather maybe thought presenting a united front was the best thing for him. Like many children of divorced parents, when things didn't go his way at his mom's he went to his dad's. His dad had rules... no girls in the house. He didn't follow the rules there either. Remember this is Prince He was probably even at a early age wanting things his way. At 19, he went into a record company and refused to sign unless he had total control of his material, play all the instruments HIS way, produce his album HIS way.
Now that is all good, and we love him for it... but do you think that attitude started at 19? Do you think he was an obedient, mindful child... then just flip the script when he turned 18?
I don't think so. I think he was head strong as a teenager. And as a teenager, every thing he liked or every decision he made was not always the best.

I can't believe I have to say this. I mean he was a TEENAGER WHO DIDN'T GET HIS WAY, SO HE LEFT HOME to live with others who let him do what he wanted to.
How many out there are parents to teens or tweens? Can you feel what I am saying?

And about the kids that end up in prison... most of the "bad" that grew up into troubled men were raised with very indulgent and lenient parents.
My uncle could do no wrong, lost his mind using drugs.
My husbands best friend... the only boy and his dad treated him like he was special... OD at age 40, his other friend... the baby to follow a toddler sibling who died at age 3... this guy is cracked out, been in prison...
my nephew... who like Prince was back and forth between divorced parents... 22 and a total loser, warrants for arrest, convicted felon, shits all over all of his family.
Every one of those men needed to have some1 whup their azz when they disobeyed, became belligerent and mouthy. Maybe they would have learn the word respect, first of elders, then later of authority. They never learned... and it showed in the way they lived their lives. expect you fuck up in society, and they throw your azz in jail, you cheat or disrespect a hustler on the street, you get your azz shot. That is real.

I knnow what your saying.I'm gonna have 3 teenage gils at the same time in 10yrs.Imagine it a 13yr old 14.5yr old and a 16.5yr old.God help me!Prince would've been head strong since he was a wee boy.Hence the genius!

I always go back to the "DMSR" book whenever I want to read about a Prince's personal info.

Charles(his cousin) said @ some point that the whole rough childhood thing was blown outta proportion. He said none of the family felt sorry for either of Prince nor Tyka, they have everything other kids in the family didn't(including their mother's over-protection).

He even implied that the things he went through were self-made, like ya'll said the brotha was stubborn and there's a point where you HAVE to grow up by any means necessary. I can relate to that becoz I was a wild kid in my heyday but reality always struck whenever I got too big for my britches, momma would lock me out untill I learned who's the boss in that house - and I'm not talking about Minnie Wood, I'm talking about rough ass Harlem.

My take is, nobody can judge his parents for what they did. I'm a firm believer that when the sun goes down, still the fact remains that EVERYBODY love their kids strongly yet differently.

From the outside lookin' in, it seems that they gave the boy a hard time but I'm positive that they loved their kid and when the going's got rough on him, they tracked & looked over him when he's out on the streets, and when they saw that things settled down, they left him alone.

I didn't hear about Tyka being thrown outta the house, maybe that says something.

I don't think that Prince's relationship with his step-father is as bad as what it is made out to be. I know for a fact that he owns the house that his step-father lives in.
