I can't believe they had the nerve though to rip off some of the techniques Prince had pioneered in the studio:

It was a completely self-contained album which was meant to be played from start to finish. - Obviously copied from the Lovesexy concept

McCartney's vocals were sped up for the song When I'm 64 to give it a unique sound. - Plainly the band had just been listening to Camille

Joking apart, even though musically I don't feel there is that much common musical ground, The Beatles pioneered a lot of the concepts and techniques that Prince (among others) embraced 20 or more years later.

In terms of studio trickery, I guess that as soon as we could record to tape there were people chopping it up, speeding it up and slowing it down. Prince has definitely been at the cutting edge of what can be done in the studio, but to think he was the first to experiment shows a serious lack of knowledge.

I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm for discovering Prince's and hopefully others' music, but there is a lot to be said for holding back a little and reading and listening to what is out there before wading in. cool

uh-oh

some ppl will have some more surprises/shocks
like listening to HelterSkelter (Beatles: White Album (actually called The Beatles)) and then to Bambi...
Magical mystery tour and mid 80s Prince stuff (I wonder U, Always in my hair, RAspberry B. etc)
And then Hey Jude
and
Gold (nananananananananananananananana- naaaaah !!!)

but to be clear no stealing no copying
just more or less inspired, influenced
but in the end P. is just influenced by the Beatles mostly via all the artists whose music is based on the Beatles, don't think he listened to a particular song and copied it, rather the Beatles had an impact on what (and how different) pop songs can be (not those 2/3 chord 2 minute distractions to clap to, sth to broaden the mind, a playground for ideas and styles etc)

Well, the beatles did a lot before anyone else. Prince is still phenomenal tho. Prince is the ultimate throwback to such a rich period in music history, and most of todays bands would take Prince's worst day of recording tracks and still be satisfied. So the man's got something! biggrin

Let's cut the kid some slack. It's not WHEN you learn about the greats it is THAT you learn about the greats.

ATWIAD is largely considered to be Prince's "Beatles" album. Go get Sgt. Pepper, listen to it back to back with ATWIAD, come back and let us know what you thought.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

Sure. I just might do that. And yeah, you're right. I guess it is more important that "now I know"... heh. I just can't believe this thread is still active.

I've heard that "Paisley Park" is definitely Beatles-influenced, so I guess it's worth a shot. Cuz I am crazy about ATIWAD... I think its better than a lot of people give it credit for. The fact its not really talked about says that its average and pales in comparison to PR, SOTT, 1999 and several others.

I'm 20, too, sugar. Age ain't nuthin but a number.

But I been in the music industry since the day I was born, so...

Wait another 20 years and see if you agree with what you just said. And if that don't work, wait another 20 and so forth. Man, I thought I knew it all back then, and as I get older, the more I realize how little I do know. Plus, I can't quite do what I could 20 years ago, and I bet I'll be able to do even less the older I get.

Back to the thread: Much props to the Beach Boys and the Monkees as well who did a lot of laboratory work in the studio.

I just heard this on GMA this morning.

40 years ago today, The Beatles released their infamous album "Sgt Pepper's Band"...

I've never heard of this album, but it's apparently voted the best rock album ever made... but I'm not so knowledgable about the Beatles.

They told the story behind it. The Beatles locked themselves in a studio for 4 months to record it (which was unhear of at the time). It's the first album where lyrics were poetry, all the songs fit together like a puzzle and they were the first ones to use a studio like a laboratory.

Man, when I heard this, it kinda took a little of the magic away from Prince. I thought he was the first and only person who used the studio like that. But then again, he's not the first one to play guitar like that (Jimi Hendrix came b4 him) and have that kind of stage presence (James Brown came b4 him there).

It makes him seem a little more human. He merely adopted such things for his own style & has made it work for him.

Just goes to show what I know shrug

I don't want to sound rude, but girl, we're about the same age, how can you never have heard of that album????? Oh girl, that's sad. Saying that you are "just" 20 is no excuse. lol I seriously don't understand how one can live on this planet and at your/our age still haven't heard of Sgt Peppers. You must have seen the cover at least once:

I don't know exactly how you have seen our Prince but of course he is a human being like we all are and of course there have been artists before him who have worked hard to create exactly what they want.
Borrow a few books about the history of music in general and about popular music. You will see the world of music through different eyes! biggrin

yeah good point. After hearing the hint of Queen in "Moonbeam levels", the whole way he incorporates other influences into his work is just amazing... especially when he does put his own spin on the original. That takes true genius.

I don't know exactly how you have seen our Prince but of course he is a human being like we all are and of course there have been artists before him who have worked hard to create exactly what they want.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. I guess before this "wakeup call", I figured he was the first to do the things I really admire about him (put an album together like a puzzle so it speaks as loud as the pieces and using the studio as his laboratory)... I didn't know anyone else did that.

Not that I could ever discredit The Beatles. I've heard less than 10 of their songs (and yeah, should probably start a collection too)... but they did influence The Click Five, a group that I really got into when I heard of them.

I'm not going to go overboard and grab every single Beatles album that I want... but I probably will go out and buy a few after this. If I were to pick them or The Stones, I'd pick The Beatles... because I'm more into their sound.

But now I might like The Stones better cuz, for all i know, their rock sound could have influenced Prince too.

While we're on the subject, are there any other Beatles albums that are must-haves in any musician-fan collection?

This is the FIRST time I have ever heard anyone claim "Moonbeam Levels" is influenced by Queen. Only Prince song I know of with any strong Queen influences is of course "3 Chains O' Gold", but could you elaborate a bit, I mean is there any particular Queen song or Queen era that you feel "Moonbeam Levels" sounds like?

If you ever get a copy of Prince's The Undertaker, you'll want to be aware that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote Honky Tonk Women (which Prince performs). And Richards says he swiped that guitar riff in that song from Ry Cooder.

not quite sure... jsut the overall sound of the chorus kinda reminds me of them in general. But I could just be blowing smoke here cuz I'm in no ways knowledge about anything Queen-related... except I know they did "we will rock u" and Bohemian Rhapodosy... a song everyone in my graduating class (not to mention the current juniors and sophomores at my senior prom) seemed to know the words to... I don't know the words to Bohemian Rhapodosy (let alone how to spell it)... and I've heard it so much at my school dances that I'm sick of it.
When it comes to those regarded as "legends", Prince is the only one I know a lot about (and have given more than the time of day)... everyone else I've just heard of, but never took the time to listen.

But give me a break, people. I have a life... I don't have time to check out everything people think I should check out... all I really got time for is Prince and the artists of today that I really want to check into.

oh yeah... how could I forget Sly...

but I gotta really work my way thru Prince (at least have a decent amount of his stuff) b4 going onto any new projects.

I've checked a little into his history with bringing groups together (Vanity/Apollonia 6 and The Time to name a couple)... and like... wow... man simply amazes me.

Sly and Larry Graham is definitely a good thing to check into... cuz in every single interview, Prince has mentioned Sly at least once...

heh... I've got to get that Beatles album, check into Sly, and The Time kinda has me a little curious now... and I wasn't even gonna check into them... but they were considered to be the most successful of his proteges (apart from Shelia E., of course)
