Prince in Jump The Shark Book

I came across a new 'Jump The Shark' book about rock stars at Tower Records today. For those of you who don't know, "jump the shark" refers to the point when something started to suck & go downhill.
Now here's the crazy part: The book claims that Prince jumped the shark when he broke up the Revolution & released 'Sign O The Times'! They even called SOTT "a mess".
Now I can understand when somebody says Prince jumped the shark when he released 'Graffiti Bridge' or when he changed his name (which is what I thought the book was going to choose). But SOTT?!?! Huh?!?

I think he jumped the shark right after Graffiti Bridge -- trying to give people what he thought they wanted which led into the WB fiasco. Not to say that there weren't lots of good songs during the time, 'cuz there were -- afterall, he's still a great songwriter no matter why or what he chooses to write.

I think he's steadily been on the rise since the mid-90s, but The Rainbow Children and his live performances during the last couple years are a definite sign that he's back!! It's good that he's touring the rest of the world now to make this known.

I think we can all, or most of us agree that assesment was wrong. Whoever wrote that was just a person who loved the Revolution.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

I thought he jumped the shark with Under The Cherry Moon and the MTV sweepstakes that went with it.
The movie tanked & he breaks up the band.
So the new Prince record better be hot shit to make up for the band & the movie.
Sign o'the Times did not get great reviews from everyone.
Rolling Stone called it a patchwork quilt of songs - yet months later named it one of the records of the year.
There wasn't a hit single until U Got The Look which was the third single.
There were no videos until the third single.
It was not the hit machine people expected after Prince threw away his band.
Then the problems with the Lovesexy cover.
Batman was a career move not great art.
The reception of Grafitti Bridge the movie.
The assless pants
And finally the name change.
It was kinda one big long lasting shark jump.

He deliberately jumped the shark with 'ATWIAD'. He then became addicted to shark jumping. Hell, he's king of the shark jumpers!!

I would hardly call that jumping the shark. If that's the case EVERY artist has jumped the shark. No album gets great reviews from everyone, no matter how critically acclaimed it is. And it has always been critically acclaimed.

Prince Jumped the shark when he made "Under the Cherry Moon"..

trying to do movies and hit homerums and music and hit homeruns is almost impossible.

this is where Prince started to get bad press.. when he kept making movie and BAD ones.

also pissing off some with the Lovesexy album at the sametime where you can't click around on a CD

didn't help..

The wave turned with the critics with the movies.
