Youch! That was a little harsh. I think TRC is very passionate. It just so happens that I'm not interested in his newfound "passion." I think the new music he got out of it is great, though. A step in the right direction, for sure.

tRC is miles davis with vocals? i respect your opinion. but from someone who's followed both of their careers, and has watched prince make idiotic career decisions based solely on money, while miles made decisions based on art until the day he died... if tRC is miles davis with vocals is true, then half of his material since 1989 that prince has put out is fingernails with chalkboard. thank god for his stops in europe 1992-1995... the glam slam/paisley performances that were recorded from 94-96... and all too brief moments during the ona tour... & the celebration... otherwise, many of us would've completely moved on by now...

"TRC is Miles with vocals".
That's laughable. Only someone unfamiliar with the music of Davis (pre-comeback #2) could make such a statement and be so deathly serious. While being quite prolific, Prince hasn't got the musical acumen to flex with the works of Davis' Adderly/Trane sextet, the Shorter/Carter/Hancock/Williams or the quartet with Trane, etc. The music is just so totally different and of a different era. There's no sense in forcing a ridiculous analogy of Prince to Miles. Just let the musical legacy of Prince speak for what it is: A testament on r&b, rock & roll and funk. I'd hate to find someone digging into Miles and saying "HUH? I don't hear no Prince". Best to just accept each artist on their own terms, without any preconceptions. test

TGE is crap I don't see what the 'fams' hear in it. but don't compare tRC to someone who continuosly took risks with his career (and succeeded)... not when someone tries (and fails) to sell out (rutjf)... not when someone tries for 15 years to get back the audience he lost since rap hit the scene... from trying to sound like others (again, failing to sound original) on tRC (the work == james brown, mellow == soulquarians)...
Man, anyone who denies the existence of Miles' low points after the early 1970s should have their heads checked. Nothing Miles did was even close to the music he used to create after the early 1970s until his death. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Everybody who has followed Davis's career knows this. So in that case he has something else in common with Prince when nothing he created in the 1990s was even close to his 1980s music. Both have had very low points. There is no denying that fact. prince needs to stick to his own sound 'family name'/'1+1+1 is 3'/etc
yeah 1+1+1 is 3 has nothing in common with PFunk. Tell us more about how much you know about music. and it's doubtful that's going to happen anytime soon. mr bible study hangs out a little too much with larry, tina, and mani to write anything with passion... imagine if 9/11 had happened in the mid eighties... the songs we would've gotten then... instead... we get to hear about how abraham lincoln is a racist... no intelligent lyrics...
yeah, Pussy Control from TGE were really intelligent lyrics. Sexy Muthafucker from TGE was intelligent lyrics. Know what you are talking about before talking loud and saying nothing.

Mostly I agree, though I find many valid and innovative musical statements being at least into mid-70s: 1974 Dark Magus [live] 1975 Pangaea [live] 1975 Agharta [live] Ironically, I find Miles' late 80s bands (featuring Foley, Marcus Miller and Kenny Garrett) borrowing heavily from conventions of PFUNK's live show as well as Prince's instrumental work (MADHOUSE,NPG). Before that, he meandered aimlessly; flirting with lightweight Herb Alpert pop jazz/vox (the "The Man with The Horn" and "Shout") and Euro-techno YOR'RE UNDER ARREST. Though DECOY and STAR PEOPLE are good they're not as compelling as the 74 - 75 period before he retired. test

Cal, it looks like nobody (including me) recommended In A Silent Way. Damn, I love this album. Maybe more than Jack Johnson. It's intoxicating stuff. Try it. I'm addicted and will probably need to be weaned off the stuff.
But don't expect the straight ahead acoustic jazz if you try it. [This message was edited Thu Sep 26 1:35:43 PDT 2002 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Anyone interested in electric Miles should read the British music writer Paul Tingens excellent book "Miles Beyond : Electric Explorations of Miles Davis, 1967-1991". THANK YOU for the recommendations (and the whole breakdown, Nova!). I think that's why I've been apprehensive to add more Miles to my collection - after striking out a few times & knowing his catalogue is frickin' HUGE, I just didn't know where to go. Coltrane seems easier to me, more predictable in terms of style (but I only have 5 of his, definitely gotta build that up too). coltrane more predictable? listen to "Giant Steps", then listen to "Ole", then listen to "OM"... and you will talk very different. coltrane might seem more predictable because he wasnt living long enough to get into fusion, hip hop, etc. but technically he masters his instrument better than miles did, coltrane was much more of a hard worker and a perfectionist. he is my favorite musician of all times, once you REALLY get in his groove and unerstand his playing, nothing will compare, no prince, no miles, nobody. he is the richest (talking about musical value) ever and must have been the most spiritual motherfucker who ever walked this planet. if everybody was like trane, the world would be such a beautiful place... when he died, he left a whole so big that all jazz fell through it. Trane DAMN! Lemme shut up, I have no clue what I'm talking about! I guess I should have said "consistent" instead of "predictable" - but I still haven't even scratched the surface with him, so "seems" would be the most operative word in that misguided statement. Yea, I should have just shut up... Again, thank you, Soulpower! writing these down Soulpower my fav Coltrane albums: - Blue Train (Blue Note) - Giant Steps (Atlantic) - Ole (Atlantic) - My favorite things (Atlantic) - Lush Life (Prestige) - Coltrane (Impulse) - A love supreme (Impulse) - Live at the Village Vanguard (Impulse) - John Coltrane and Duke Ellington (Impulse) - Ballads (Impulse) - Meditations (impulse) - Africa/Brass (Impulse) - Impressions (Impulse) - the John Coltrane Quartet plays! (Impulse) - Kulu Se Mama (Impulse) My favorite still is "A love Supreme"... imo nothing beats that piece of music... Amen. That record is intense and I felt changed after listening to it. Very powerful stuff. Blue Train is absolutely superb too.
