I'm bored of Prince's most famous songs. 1999, Purple Rain, When Doves Cry etc. I never listen to these songs anymore, not with any feeling anyway.I think he's moved on, and wants his fans to do the same.I can understand a new fan of his music getting excited about his 80's stuff, as 'discovering' Prince and buying his back catalogue was the most exciting time i had as a fan.
That old stuff doesn't do much for me anymore though.I guess it might have something to do with the fact that these are the only songs of his that are deemed good enough for radio, which i feel is a shame. Are they Prince's epitaph? are they the only songs he'll be remembered for.I think so and that's depressing as hell. am i alone in feeling like this?

I can tell you I feel about the same, not that the songs is bad, but too exploited. I mean, how many times haven´t you heard Purple Rain, 1999, Little red corvette in media, not the complete song, just parts of these songs, like a reminder... I guess that makes you most tired of hearing these clips all over and over and over again... Such a bad way to listen to his music...

Yeah I agree. To me, those songs are ok and not as special as some stuff that isn't that well known.

I remember tellig this guy i was an obsessed Prince fan, and he said," U like Prince? Man I listened to all four of his albums! etc." I was like...
Any way I think he was just trying 2 get in these draws. But yeah, I don't really even listen 2 the top hits that i still hear on the radio. ESPECIALLY KISS. Got damn cant stand it anymore because of over-played out-ness. But I gotta give it 2 KMOJ in Minneapolis. If they play a Prince song, its gonna be a new one or one that they usually dont play no more. When was the last time u heard Scandelous, U Make My Sun Shine, The One, Blue Light, on the radio? I dont think Prince cares anymore about exploitation of his music like back in the day, but the new interview coming on Jay Leno should get some people knowing about him. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I think the Purple Rain album was over played. I have adored this mans music for 18 years and Purple Rain is the ONLY CD I do not own of his. It's not that it isn't amazing music, the radio stations over played it and killed it.
This man is so versatile with his sounds, I'm tired of only hearing his so called mainstream shit on the radio stations, mix it up a little and play some of the real funky stuff like Calhoun Square or better yet Family name.

I think what you're feeling is natural for a true fan. But it doesn't bother me that those big hits could be the only ones he's known for. It's disappointing, but I'm not depressed about it. This type of thing isn't exclusive to Prince. And at least one of the alternatives was to not have any sort of commercial success at all. Fact of the matter is, Prince could be innovative and commercially accessible at the same time - most recording artists aren't capable of that. Some are either adept at one or the other, if either one. If I had never heard "Doves" almost 20 years ago, and just heard it recently, I'd still feel the same way I do about it now. Regardless of its airplay, it is, and was, a groundbreaking song. Only its constant 18 year familiarity could possibly breed a true fan's contempt. Radio saturation can kill any song. Look what it did to "Stairway." ahhhhh.... [This message was edited Sun Dec 1 15:43:03 PST 2002 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Kiss.. shit, such a good song, but I agree, I can´t stand that one anymore eather, and the video aswell.. Just saw a parallel to James Brown aswell, if you say you listen to James Brown, nobody knows more than "I feel good!" and that´s it. Isn´t that really a shame to the todays generation to just let 'em know the most commercial stuff of the few of the real artist that is still alive..?

I do get kinda bored with hearing the same Prince song over and over again but I'm glad that the radio is playing any of his music, new or old. It would be so cool to hear Housequake or The Question of U or 1+1+1 is 3 be played one day but who knows. I'm just grateful that new music is being made so that I won't have to rely on Kiss or When Doves Cry to remember him by. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'm not.it happens too all Artists.it's better too be Remember than too Be Forgotten.it brings back too me a time when you earned your keep as a Artist.you make Songs too stand out&hopefully they will have a Life all there own?I never get tired of the Songs because it represents a time period as with any Artist there work represents a certain time period&vibe.Classic Songs Never get Old too Me. mistermaxxx

Yes, I feel the same way.I'm always looking for Prince
to like other than his radio hits.A friend of mine always wants to hear "Kiss", and at first it was cool but dang not all the time,it's my least favorite song of his. Once in awhile I'll listen to his commercial songs, but that's only after listening to all his other unrecognized material. This is why I feel Prince is underestimated because people only know his big hits and not his other brilliant songs. There's so many it blows my mind. My name is BISCUIT...and I am funky!

Thanks for the answers guys. It's interesting 'kiss' keeps getting mentioned, that is the one 'classic' that i don't and will never tire of.I recently got the 12" version on CD single after someone stole my vinyl version.it's got a whole new lease of life on my stereo.
