keytar in 'Gold' video?

The video for Gold features Tommy B playing a Keytar (strap-on keyboard) during Prince's guitar solo.

Anyone know what the model of his keyboard is? Couldn't find it anywhere!
It starts on a C, seems to be 4 octaves, and the end of the neck attaches back around to the body. Not a Roland Axis - but what is it??

(Then there's the question of why somebody would have been using this in 1995, but - oh well!)

It's definitely a custom instrument, it's always been known as the 'Purpleaxxe' but I'd be surprised if it's anything more than an off the shelf controller built into a fancy nob shaped case.

Not sure what model it is as I can't recall any controllers with such a large range, but I had a look on http://www.vintagesynth.com/ and it looks like it could be a Lync LN-4.

It seems Prince has actually patented this, just in case anyone would rip it off.... http://www.google.com/pat...&zoom=4&dq

Awesome!!
I forgot about the PurpleAxxe!

Just noticed - the patent seems to expire in July 2008.
New PurpleAxxe industry, anyone? smile

I´m not familiar with that kind of instrument ,I mean, I´ve seen him play it live in Berlin in 1994 but I don´t understand what´s so funny about him or Tommy B. playing it in 1995....is it outdated, just cheesy and corny or technically unnecessary ?

It's just that it's so associated with the '80s in a cheesy/silly way, it would've been like going onstage with a Jheri curl in 1995.....

In a couple of the drawings in the patent, part of the body looks like an upside-down scrotum. The whole thing overall looks like a dick with a pitchforked head.

I can't be the only one to have thought this.

Flip it around and see what I mean?

There're only 2 instrument voices that can be selected, Organ or Bell.
