Emancipation Thread

How good is this album??!!

i bought it from hmv for £2.99 back in 2004, its so good. i listen to it atleast 4 times a week recently. evry song is amazing.

I especially like:

Jam Of The Year (Very funky, and Rosies vocals are amazing)

Betcha By Golly Wow! (big and powerfull, but it seems almost sad to me)

Mr Happy (cheesy 90's rapping, and a addictive synth line)

Holy River (my all time fav prince song, i love the way it builds up to the guitar solo)

Face Down (also in my top ten p record)

La La La Means Eye love u (albums best ballad, very catchy, like a cousin of Eye Hate U)

Style (funkiest thing ever!)

Sleep Around (more funk, sounds good loud)

My Computer (albums strangest song apart from Human Body, although i canot hear Kate Bush)

One Of Us (almost to religious but very powerfull)

The Love We Make (another good ballad, has a very sad feel to it)

this album was princes last masterpice imho, although im one of those fans who loves evrything prince has done. nps was great but this is 10 times better.

Yep...

Here are some:

Slave 2 The System
2020
Feelgood
Journey 2 The Center Of Your Heart
Eye Am The DJ
Goodbye (can be found on disc 3 of Crystal Ball).

There a very nice bootleg called "Emancipation - The Secret Chapter" that has those are an early version of Emanciapation (the track) that is excellent.

I think that Emancipation's biggest flaw is the excess of material. If it had been
a one disc set...man! Pure GOLD!

Yeah, I like this boot and keep it filed beside Emancipation. Liner booklet has Versace pics too, which are v. nice.

i like disc 3 pretty well, and there are a handful of songs from disc 1 i like. only one or two songs from disc 2, and the rest i think are either too sappy or too sad, considering how things turned out.

It's still high on my priority list.
Everyone keeps saying how lame it is and (sometimes) what a waste of time it was making it 3-discs and such.
Considering the place he was when he made them is motivation enough for me to want it in my collection.
I'll be more than ready to tell off the "haters" after I get it.

3cd set that is cohesive sounding. Many others have 3cd sets but they don't sound cohesive and are usually outtakes, hits or live. Maybe for 3 discs it was a little too cohesive??? though it offers a little something for everyone, the production is the same.

Prince has been content with recording single cds for sometime but I would love to see another epic set like Emancipation or a collection like Crystal Ball.

Damn, Coughing on a Crystal Ball 2 peanut..again.

She Gave Her Angels, Van Gogh, 2morrow, The Dance (NPGMC version), Livin' 2 Die, Hypnoparadise, Heart Of Stone (or whatever we call it now) and Poom Poom were recorded around then.

also, a few C&D and Vault tracks were recorded then as well.

and the alternate versions of Slave, Emancipation, Soul Sanctuary, etc.

I think there's even enough good stuff on there to make it 2 discs, esepecially if you throw in several of the outtakes (actually, most of them).

How things like "We Gets Up" made the cut, I'll never understand.

Some great stuff. Some average stuff. The problem I have with Emancipation is the production. It all just sounds a bit samey.

Compared to how the original Crystal Ball set would have sounded (I'm talking 'bout the projected 1987 album here btw)

I agree. The whole thing is just soooo long, but I like disc 3 and bits and pieces of the others, especially 'Holy River'

have you heard the original? he took a beautiful, melancholy, heartfelt song and turned it into the same-old sexual come on.

No, I haven't heard it yet, but I'll give it a listen. I still like the way Prince sings it though, it sounds heartfelt, with only a bit of "sexual come ons" razz
