Jon said this on another thread. He has stated my exact opinion on the matter. This is not a matter of it being a joke or not... the joke was not only a joke, it was also a poor business decision.

Jon said:

It still baffles me that people use the same arguments over and over again. Those in support of Prince and his club continuously state that he can do or say whatever he wants on HIS website. And this is very true. But what seems to constantly be forgotten is that the website in question is not just a vehicle for him to express his views, it is also his business.

Irrelevant of what, when, how or why a statement is made, making such a statement that might offend is truly silly and detrimental to his business.

Safeway or K-Mart have every right to sell shit in a can if they wanted, but that would not be good for business and would certainly not do them any favours in terms of expanding their customer base. Even if the avid Safeway/K-Mart customers chose to defend it. So instead they do not try to promote such irrational products.

Prince has every right to his views, as do we. But by expressing those views whole heartedly through his business vehicle is just plain irrational.

What Prince should really do in order for him to be as expressive as he wishes is use another site. NPGopinion.com or something similar. Leave the club site to promote his business with impartiality so that it can be informative about relevant topics such as concert news, promotions, retail and ‘business’ news. Let his views, no matter which side of the fence he is sitting, be expressed elsewhere where we can comment, debate and not give the guy shit for offending through his official media.

All those that defend his views, fair enough. But please do not defend his mode of communicating those views. The club website is his official means of selling product and building a customer base through which he collects money. This should remain impartial to all views, creeds and colours – his own included.

Ever wondered how many people have decided NOT to join the club after visiting his website and seen some of its content? He puts out a CD on general release and advertises that club within the sleeve notes. That CD can end up in anyones hands, from any walk of life, with any and every view imaginable in any possible country in the world. For that person to then log on to the internet and find the site and see such specific views which could possibly alienate them is truly irrational and defeats the object of the venture entirely…… They will not join out of principal.

Prince, get an opinion forum and give me the choice as to whether I want to be part of your thinking or not. But let me join your club anyway, give you my money and listen to your music. I will then be the one to decide if I want to give you my business on the basis of what you are selling, not what you think. Fill your music with your opinions if you wish. If I don’t like it I will stop giving you my money. But filling your site with opinions means I may not even get as far as hearing the music and giving you any money in the first place….

Sometimes even the very basics of business principles are lost on our favourite song-meister. I really wish he would employ someone to help him out and advise him constructively.

What I don't get is exactly what is new here. Prince has been alienating people, including his fans, for his entire career. The whole "prince is a pompous ass" thing certainly isn't a new development. When I first started to seriously listen to Prince in the early eighties I quickly reached the conclusion "this guy just might be a prick". Didn't really matter cause I'm primarily interested in the music. I don't know the man so his "prickness" really doesn't concern me. The only difference I see nowadays is that he is alienating a different segment of the fandom than he used to.

Personally, I've been offended by Prince in the past, I expect I'll be offended by Prince in the future. That's just part of the deal at this point. Who really wants a kinder, gentler, non-offensive prince anyway?

Not me... I like atheist jokes. Like "Your momma is so atheist she won't moan "Oooh god!" when she fakes it for your dad."

i thought this was wrong b4 ... i mean i am partly religious in that i belive in that there is some kind of a god and spirts and stuff and i mediatate and pray myself sometime .. but i don;t belive in going to mass etc etc .. Prince has said something like "if u don't belive in chirst ur goinna go to hell" i mean if he said it in a interview or something when somebody asked him his opinon fair nuff .. but at a concert??? when he knows full well people in the audence might not belive in Christ .. Sorry but thats just slagging off ur fans ... Hey maybe this is all a publicity stunt .. i mean telling a fan that they will go to hell for having a tatoo of his bloody symbol thats just not on ... he already put a sticker on the rainbow kids saying it was "controversal" i don't have it .. How is it controversal?
my opinon on the whole thing? Prince is getting old .. his marrages have failed (Does getting divorced mean u will go to hell btw Prince?) his kid died .. he was once very popular mainstream now not so ... These things i will say are horrible and i feel for him esp when the kid died..
u all don't know what that stuff will do to your head .. esp if u have all the money in the world and u still aren't happy ..So what ? u turn to religon ...
and u go OVERBOARD .. i could even think that Prince could see himself as a jesus like figure ... if he preches to the world through his music then maybe god will forgive him for his own mistakes anf for the fact that his rich and famous ..
On being a prick ... Elton John most famously told this story ..." iwent up to Prince and said i'm a big fan of your stuff and he looked at me and just walked off .. left me standing like a twat.He a prat but a clever prat"

I *was* offended by the joke, being an atheist. But it doesn't surprise me. It's very typical of the new Prince. Lift up your own beliefs at the expense of all others'.

How could you be offended by the joke? I've read some of your posts. You shouldn't be offended by anything.

I'm agnostic (If one must be labelled) and indifferent to P's religious beliefs but I respect this message as an attempt to rile and spark debate amongst his fanbase. He succeeded.

I don't doubt tens if not hundreds of Prince fans have become fully paid up JWs since their idol made his faith so clear...

I think it's kinda funny, actually. I don't find it judgemental, really. I mean, isn't that what atheists really do think? That there's no point in believing in an afterlife because it doesn't exist? smile

The point is he's shoving shit off on the people who've been putting food on his table for years, whether they be atheist, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, etc. To tell us we're not going anywhere, or presumably to Hell is retarded. I hope he goes to his Hell for being a judgemental asshole.

But I still like the music. eek

For "someones" sake take a chill. biggrin

Too many essays in this thread. If u can't make your point in an economical, interesting way, just don't bother because it takes too long to wade through.

Exactly.

That reminds me, I've been meaning to write a letter to Barnes and Noble about their philosophy section. . .I really think they should eliminate all of the books that are longer than 100 pages. If you can't say it in 100 pages, it's probably not worth saying. Kant and Heidegger and all of those other wordy German fools can kiss my ass.
