I just took a listen to "Free" again and for some reason I now just can't hear what I heard when I first posted here. I could cleary hear him sing "all those motherfuckas are free" but when I listen to it now it sounds much more like "all the men and the women are free".

confuse

Hah, listened to it too and heard the 'motherfucker' part the first time, then I read the rest of the comments on this thread and now I can't make out that part anymore. It sounds like something completely different smile

Whew, so I'm not the only one! I wonder why? hmmm

That's what P wanted. I just always heard that part. If I listened to it today or tomorrow, I'll hear it. It's as clear as the sun or the moon in the sky to me. Perhaps what it is funkenstein, is that u have to know WHERE it is that he says it. It's definately a timing thing. He says it slightly behind the beat. That's also intentional. he knows that it's natural for the listener to follow "on time" right along with Vanity, Lisa and the rest. When P shouts this, his dragging behind them. That's the key. U heard it the first time when I brought it to your attention. But u have to know where u heard it the first time to hear it again.

I finally heard it lol

Blackguitaristz is right about Prince trying to "distract" listeners on this album....trying to hide what he's really saying. On the song "Automatic",when he says "I'll go down on U...all night",notice the cymbal clash...as if he's trying to hide that dirty lyric, lol.

thanx, soul.

I definitely hear "all the women and the men" at exact that time where I before heard what you hear. P works in mysterious ways... smile

Nah, it's called "multi-tracking".

Snap

this is my favorite album -- i can't say how many times i've listened to these songs. today, i took several listens again to "Free," and to me, it sounds like he's doing at 3:27 what he did at 3:12-3:14, just a little different... i guess you could say (and you did) that he's mumbling the MFer part as Morris did in PR when he's talking to Apples for the first time: "either someone slipped something in my drink, or you're the finest MFer i've seen in ages" -- but i'm gonna have to bow out on this debate and just say I believe that Prince is not mumbling or masking his lyrics but is instead singing "I'm so glad, I'm glad I'm free, yeah..." -- i believe he's only repeating the same thing he did at 3:11-3:14 with "I'm just glad, I'm just glad I'm free, yeah..."

let me know if you hear any other things like this in his other songs... i always like finding something new... or at least trying to listen to the same old song in a different way

peace

I can dig it. You're close in the sense that at exactly 3:13, he does do the Morris mumble (excellent example) but here as well as at 3:27, he says "all those motherfuckers" and then he just repeats it again on the top of the chorus when he screams it. But like I posted earlier, you've got to know where to listen. U have a few folks on here who at first said that they did hear the "motherfucker" and then went back again and lost it. Out of everyone who posted, there's more who say that they do indeed hear it. This thread has gotten way more views that posts so, I'm sure some of the people did go and check it out. What they heard, who knows?

Kat, you're crazy cute and all, but uh,...nah baby. P doesn't say "all the women and the men" no where in this song. That's a cool line though.

You know blackz, I believe you, really, but I cannot understand a word of what he's saying there! lol

But this is a cool thread, especially I think for some non-native English speaking orgers. Such hidden things might get over our ears easily. Any more of such little messages?

Yeah, I get ya now. And I also understand the "Listen" phrase. Some folks just have sharper hearing than others.

I missed this thread sad

"Free" is probably my least favorite
from 1999... aside from "Little Red Corvette"
I don't dislike LRC... but it's one of those
popular songs of his like "1999", "Purple Rain", etc
that I've heard so many times in my life
I don't have to hear them again

I will check it out though cool

because those who mind don't matter
