Prince's "rock" songs I'm trying to school someone on another board about Prince. This guy has very cursory knowledge of P and claims The Artist Currently Known As doesn't play "rock".
Can y'all help me put together a list of Prince's rock songs (YouTube or audio clips would be a bonus).

well, this is not as easy as people think. you have to understand the relative meaning of rocking to people that like Rock music. You know, it needs to give them the urge to pick up a guitar and chug a heavy chord, like AC/DC or Sabbath etc. Prince's guitar sound is often somewhat weak and processed for a rock fan. If tryig to find an album cut, it will be tough. oldies like Bambi are "ok" but still lack some beef in the guitar sound, and his vocals would ruin it for most rock. Closest I think as a song, not necessarily guitar solo is Darling Nikki. This conclusion I came to when a rock fan friend came to a Prince concert really only wanting to ear Darling Nikki. Others maybe Peach for it's 70s Bolan style rock, Why you wanna treat me so bad, cause it's good two nice chords that you can just keep chugging away on, The Cross because it has such an 80s Simple Minds/U2 vibe and Let's go crazy, at the very least for the classic overdone rock screeching ending.

I agree about his recordings. It's been different at his live performances over the years, though. In fact, I'd say the current arrangements of most of the stuff he's playing in concert right now would be considered rock. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Fury on SNL rocked pretty hard, though his soloing live still tends to follow a minor or major scale with those wierd and wonderful prince notes and phrasing. Rarely a classic Rock/blues scale like Angus Young or Gary Moore may unleash. Again leaves classic rockers confused I feel. Even a blues number like The Ryde on Sacrifice of Victor video - and I just adore that performance - any other rock guitarist would probably have kept it classic blues pentatonic scale, but Prince hits those unexpected notes throughout.

machinegun what the fuck are you talking about???
prince plays blues scale in many of his solos(example purple rain) every guitar playewr in rock music play pentatonic scale/ but its boring to play only pentatonic.so prince plays other scales, modes i AGREE THAT prince sound can be proceseed but that aint the caSE these days. prince is fusion of styles but when he rocks he rocks realy hard. tell me that ending section of family name isnt rock at its hardest.

I certainly enjoy them and Family Name rocks for a few seconds, but I would not give that song to a rock fan and expect to convert them. They would have years and years of rock shredding as their frame of reference. From our Prince perspective he's rocking, from a rock fans perspective, he's usually not.

I'm going to a soul weekender in Birmingham tomorrow, and ppl there consider everything Prince does to be rock
A Prince song would clear the floor there, even if it didn't have a guitar on it...

A Prince song would clear the floor there, even if it didn't have a guitar on it... Prince's music is always that way. The funk and R&B crowd think he sold out to be rock and the rock crowd feel he's more funk and R&B then anything. Then the crowd that likes the punk funk and soul hate how he gets all jazzy nowadays...

those scales a distraction????
c'mon man so that means steve vai, satriani they dont play rock music because they use modes combinated with pentatonic. do you know how boring is to play only pentatonic. don't get me wrong angus young is great but there is much more about guitar then pentatonic. and one more thing if prince wants he can rock harder then everyone. but (hard) rock is only one aspect of his interest.

lovers to go and see young prince combined songs from the first two albums giving them heavier rock edge. have you heard i wanna be your lover live from atlanta 1980 (supporting rick james)??? that version of i wanna be your lover is full of distorted rock leads and noises by prince and dez and untill these days still remains the best version of the song to my ears.
