Now, the "Let's Go Crazy"...that's essential. No way! It's funky.

Now, the "Let's Go Crazy"...that's essential. No way! It's funky. I like album and remix equally. They each send the song in a slightly different direction genre-wise. "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

It's on disc 2 of the "Ultimate" Prince CD. I have that shit on vinyl. . . and I loves it! He's giving us much attitude and talkin' mo shit. Quintessential Prince! I didn't get the Ultimate CD cuz I've got all that stuff on vinyl and put it on CD myself. Is there anything new or previously unreleased on it? [Edited 5/24/07 20:21pm]

I ran a thread on the remix version sometime back. call it his "black version" cuz, that's exactly what it is. At that stage of P's career, he was shooting for a crossover hit in a big way. He knew this song was going to do it for him. So not only the mix but his inclusion of Dez's vocals and most telling, Dez's guitar playing, shows where P's head was at regarding this song. Although P always smoked on his rock leads, P, like Jimi, Hazel, Isley, sounded black. Which is a very distinctive sound to have. And a very beautiful sound to have. My point here is Dez, although obviously is a brutha, had more of a 'white" sound in his leads. And I'm refering to Dez's playing live, not just on this track. Dez's phrasing on his leads, his choice of sounds, his guitar tone, is more akin to white players as oppossed to Jimi, Ernie Isley, Jesse, etc. P obviously knew this and wanted that type of sound and feel in Little Red. Again, even on Dez's vocals, he doesn't have that blackness in his voice like P does. So P having Dez and Lisa on vocals to this song, combined with the mix from the album, it ooozed FM radio. P's target audience dealing with this song, was white folks. he already had the black audience. Cuts like Lady Cab and DMSR and International, that was for them. The song 1999 was targeted for both. U see he had the two vocalist that he had on Little Red, Dez and Lisa, on 1999. BUT, who was featured the most on this song? Jill. Jill sang with waaay more "blackness" without sounding like Aretha and that was perfect for what P was trying to do. Anyway, the remix, I think was P saying, "This is the way the song is REALLY supposed to sound like." The album version had already done it's thing on MTV, which is what P wanted in the first place. Now, he could do what he wanted with the song. Knowing he couldn't have that bass guitar thumping and popping like that on the FM version, he had the green light now. Let's not leave out the fact that this was the best song he'd released as a single to date. It's not surprising that it was his crossover breakthrough hit. Not only was it a top-notch rock song, it was a top-notch song. And despite how good some of his previous material had been, none of the singles up to that point had been a song of this calibre.
