"TGE is the next Purple Rain"

Sorry if this has been beaten 2 death. But I feel like I need to ask.
How many people honestly believe that is true?

I've familarize myself with both of the albums over the past 2 months (as long as ive owned them both)... I wouldn't believe it for a second. If Prince told me that was his intention, I don't think I'd even believe him, of all people.

The 2 are a decade apart. Prince has changed a lot in 10 years (more than just his name), how can you honestly say that TGE is the next PR? Wikipedia boasts that it's "due to the rock and roll feel."
Rock & roll has changed as well. It's nowhere near the same it was in the 80's as in the 90's. It makes no sense 2 me personally. disbelief

In fact, the very thought of it kinda gets me a little... angry, I guess is a good word for it. Comparsion is just impossible. Right now, I can't even bring myself to say "TGE is so much better than PR, how can u compare them"... it's higher on my list of rankings, but I'm not about to tear PR down completely either.

I love both albums... I think the whole ideal was just another marketing strategy... I never would have thought of that myself unless someone told me.

Wow. You really like analyse Prince.

Anyway, that was said THEN. And I think it was more along the lines of "Gold" being better than "Purple Rain" the song. Regardless, I disagree on all counts. And in hindsight as far as lasting impact of these two albums no way can TGE hold a candle up to PR. Subjectively, TGE has far more filler, it's highs don't match the highs of PR and it lacks that sense of urgency and all around angst that made PR a pop-culture classic. Simply put: PR worked in its context and sparked a sensation, TGE didn't.

P told mayte that he had a song that was better than PR.

He was talking about the song,,not the entire album.

Yeah, this was in reference to the songs themselves and not whole albums...

I don't agree as I think Purple Rain (the song) has more emotional resonance than Gold.

However, as far as albums go, I think TGE is much, much better.

at least we all agree on something.

At first listen, I didn't know "Gold" was supposedly the next "Purple Rain".

Ironically, those are my two favorite Prince songs.

Purple Rain is pop culture cuz the movie was unlike anything released at that time. It's so famous that it's in every single store you'd go into. At Target, it was the only album they had.
I doubt, outside of the "familiars" (us here who r in the know about Prince), anyone would think that TGE was the next Purple Rain.

As for the songs themselves, they're nearly identical on the formula level
verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-steady build-up to a guitar solo-fade-out

And the subjects are similar, so they get lumped together a lot. I love both songs incredibly, but Gold & I have more of a history (although u can barely call it one considering how little time has passed)

Haha, you guys know me. cool

the purple rain album is wishy washy drum machine oriented pop. which never enters my stereo.

the gold exp is prince at his best. allways in my stereo. its more advanced, more mature and just much better than pr.
