THE "HIGH" ALBUM NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

there have been a few posts on the org about how much better the unreleased "high" album was compared to rave unto the joy fantastic. what utter rubbish. i have been a huge prince fan for twenty years and love almost everything that he has released but if he had put out the "high" album, it would have been the poorest album by prince by a long way.
rave was one of his weaker albums but compared to the quality of the songs on "high", it was a masterpiece. i do not think prince ever planned to release this collection of songs anyway, it was a throwaway effort at best. i would advise anyone who thinks "high" is a good prince album to play that and sign o the times cd back to back to hear what a real prince album sounds like.
now off to bed you go and no more nonsense, ok.

Why is SOTT still the hip point of reference to measure the worth of everyhing that Prince has ever done? And why does anyone even bother to make an argument about what album is etter than any other? Doesnt it all simply come down to what the invidivual prefers; not what someone tells him or her is good.

oh come on,anyone with any knowledge about music can make a reasonable judgement on what is great music and what isn't.
innovation, creativity and strong songwriting are how most people would judge an album by and "high" just does not stand up to the rest of his work.

Of all the songs released in NPGMC Year 1 has Prince performed any of them live on the ONA Tour? Seems like those songs are his forgotten children - a fate I dobn't think songs like Daisy Chain & Vavoom deserve. While I agree the High project - especially the song High - doesn't look like a hit cd it did contain some cool b-side type music.

See, I've heard that Prince decided not to release this as an album and give it to his club instead for many reasons. I don't think he thought the songs were shit. He just realized that they didn't hold together as an album very well. Which is true. He decided to put them out as downloads so that people could make compilations of them however they so choose. And I like the idea. Most of the songs released through there I got very excited about when they came out and I love almost all of them. It's the same thing as Rave- if you take the songs individually on their own merits, most of them are pretty great. They just don't add up to much in album format. I like thinking of the NPGMC tracks as another Crystal Ball type grab bag.

Uh, hello? One minute your asking why this person uses SOTT as a point of reference, the next you're touting the importance of what the individual fan prefers. Make up your mind.

I remember in 1984 the so called experts with the knowledge of what great music is, didn't like when doves cry. They said it was a demo, must have a base line, and it would never work, well WDC is Prince's biggest hit. That same year WDC wasn't even nominated for a grammy although the 4 or 5 songs that were sold only 1/5th of what WDC sold, WDC was Number 1 for 3 months. Played and song by everybody that liked good music, people that didn't care what the experts said. Prince knew it was good, and so did 2 million other who didn't have much knowledge of what great music was, but knew what they liked. Again Great Music is up to the individual's taste. Peace.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

I find High a strange thing. I severely like most of the songs and the style is quite coherenet (funky electro-pop). But when I burnt them to a CD I couldn't find a configuration that worked. The songs did not add to a greater and better thing. I enjoy the songs better in the NPGMC CD's I faithfully burned each month.

This comment is actually also valid for Rave. Several very good to excellent songs, some less spectacular, but together they don't make a 'real' album, simply a collection of songs.

I thought Rave made a "real" album, it was a collection of coherant albeit weak attempt at pop songs aimed at the radio. I was listening to it again today and save for maybe 4 songs it really is pretty bad. I find myself listening to songs I know I don't like such as TGRES and trying to like it.

please people, rave un2 the joy fantastic is an excellent record! i don't know why it is always getting bashed, maybe 'cause p was aiming for a hit and didn't really get one. but, IMO it is very solid. i'm also a 20-year p listener, and was extremely pleased with it when it came out in '99 and still love it. much stronger than high, which contains some good trax, but not strong enough for a whole record. BTW, the official configuration of high, according to uptown mag does not contain vavoom. it opens w/ supercute and closes with when i lay my hands on u. check out issue #49. then go give rave another spin, and listen this time!

To me the High tracks were real good. I enjoyed "Supercute" and "My Medallion", they reminded me of those old excellent b-sides that I treasure! I think tho, when I heard TRC I felt as tho Prince took more risks it was some different water he was drinking or something that made TRC sound strange and the songs were good, it was somewhat more of a complete picture with TRC. The High tracks reminded me of the stuff prince did in the 90's! Sounds life some of his better sounding stuff from that period. I think the high tracks deserve to be released on a real cd thru 1800-new-funk for everyone to buy. My non-Prince friends grooved to some of the High tracks liked them much, they like how umm "My Medallion" told a story. Maybe High will be released years from now?! WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT THE "MADRID 2 CHICAGO" TRACKS??

Look, this really really irritates me...

None of us have any idea of if there really was a High album. Sure, some songs were written but was it ever finished? So, can we ever judge it like so many of you are doing?

Uptown swear blind they know the completed High tracklist. Bullshit! Look at it for God's sake! It ends in a funny way, it's really short - it was never completed! There was no full High album! So let's stop going on about it!

In my opinion the following songs are horrible off of Rave:

Hot with U
Rave
Baby Knows

and the following average at best:

Undisputed (with a slant towards horrible)
TGRES (the song sounds forced)
Silly Game (pretty boring)
So Far, So Pleased (guitar is the only saving grace)
EDIAWinding Road (slant towards horrible)
WUgoWUdo (not that bad...could be better I thought)

the following I like:

Tangerine (too short though)
Sun, Moon and Stars (I actually like the rap part)
Man O War (the remix is not too good though)
Luv U, Don't Trust U (classic song)
Strange But True
PrettyMan (Gotta luv Maceo)

Generally there are maybe only 2-3 songs I don't like off a Prince album.

I'm really intrigued by the "Madrid 2 Chicago" album. We only know of the title track and "Breathe", but I thought they sounded really interesting. Breathe was only 2 minutes long, and isn't much of a song, but it really set a mellow, erotic, and hypnotic mood. Madird 2 Chicago was also in a similar vein. I would love to hear this album.

Because its his best album maybe!?! The one album that doesn't actually sound as if it came from any era at all. Purple Rain and 1999 sound like products of their time, albeit great products. SOTT just exists on it's own plane.
