Well i have to admit i still get excited when a new album appears, and would still pay up to a certain amount to see him live, but i'm not as obsessed as i was in my younger days.

In my teens and twenties i spent all my money on his music and anything associated with him, but at 31, daily life and mortgage have a higher priority than owning or seeing everything.

The man's had 22 years of my money, i could be rich!!!! Saying that for the amount of hours of enjoyment i've had sharing his music it's all good. Guess i've got a little bit of richness it that.

thumbs up! Yes it's all good

Having more family responsibilities definitely dictates whether I will drop everything for an impromptu Vegas romp nowadays much more than when I was solo.
In terms of the music, I find it easy to be a fan as his styles have aged with him and me. It's not like going to a Def Leppard show 20 years later and still hearing the same teen bop. Then again, he was doing Jazz Influenced Styles back in 87. We're cool. Not drinking anymore helps too, as I won't sacrifice the rent money for a 2 day in a row concert blowout anymore.

I do find it harder to be a fan, based on his stupid "secrecy" problems, thinking that last minute shit is cute and clever. Guess what? It's not cute and clever, it's childish. Not all of us are gazillionaires who can just ship off whenever they feel, most of us have obligations, financial and familial.

On the flip side, Trent Reznor slams his own label for deliberately gouging his fans. I think at this point, I'd rather see NIN than Prince

Hey, the London concerts went on sale almost 3 months before the first date and run for over 1 month. How much notice and flexibility do you need? Plus as I said already, for £31.21 you don't need to save much or plan much in advance.

Prince in the Hamptons this Summer?

http://www.eurweb.com/sto...r33684.cfm

Prince has been mentioned among a number of artists scheduled to perform at a series of charity events in East Hampton, NY this summer. According to NME, the events are scheduled to take place in July and August and will be held by The Ross School to benefit its scholarship fund. Also on board for the Hamptons concerts are Tom Petty, Billy Joel, James Taylor and Dave Matthews. However, the events have yet to be granted a mass gathering permit needed to move forward, reports NME. Unconfirmed reports are estimating that a ticket to gain access to all five events will cost around $15,000.

broken down..that's $3,000 each..far cry from $31.21..wouldn't you say? disbelief

Anxiety

i don't know if it's because i'm older or he's older, but i do find it harder to be as excited as i used to be. i feel like it's more difficult to see him these days, and that the payoff isn't what it used to be. i'm not crazy about the setlists i'm seeing, and i'm not a huge fan of 3121 either. his only draw for me anymore is his guitar playing, which i will always love.

i don't think it's me getting older - when bjork dropped her new album and played in chicago this month, i fammed my ass off. i can get excited about an artist i love if they give me a reason to be excited. as much as i'd love to be running around to vegas and LA and london this year, there are other artists doing things i think are more interesting, and i want to give them some of my money and time for a while. underneath it all, i'm still an enormous prince fan - i mean, hell, i'm editing the news for this web site, i BETTER love him! lol

i know other prince fans are crazy about the whole vegas/3121/concert residency thing, and i hope it's a success for him - it just doesn't work out for me personally. is part of that my age? dunno. shrug

&!!!%^$%^$WTF!!*^&*^ That's nuts! However, this is a special case. Celebrity charity events may often charge ludicrous amounts like this. It's not aimed at the common fan coming to watch a gig. Consider, so far, 14 nights in London, 20,000 seats each night, that's 280,000 seats mostly sold for £31.21. HOw much fairer can you get? At the same time: -
Aerosmith: £45 (standing in the park)
The Police £45-£90
Rod Stewart : £55-£65
George Michael: £75-£100
Streisand £100-£600.

Prince is still cheapest.

Easier to be a prince fan. Kids are grown and can house/dog sit while we travel. Now that he's doing smaller venues with comfortable seating we're more apt to attend his concerts. There really isn't any other artist I care to go out of my way to see.

The older I get, the easier it is to be more relaxed about it. The Prince Experience isn't a requirement anymore. It could be because I'm getting older, or it could be because of his output for the last 10 years. I buy all of his albums the first day they're out, but I'm not obsessed with him like I was at 16. Or 20. Or even 25. I'm glad it's levelled out, as fandom can easily make itself a full-time job. But I need one that pays, so it's definitely not such a high priority. But maybe now that I'm on this site, that'll change, and I'll become obsessed again. biggrin

Easier. And what's interesting is that I find way more acceptance among my 45- to 55-year-old friends about my interest in Prince.

In the 80's/90's, these people said "He's such a freak!" Now, they say "That guy is one hell of a performer!"

It's not harder, it's different.
I understand Prince so much better now. We've both had similar experiences in life : the loss of our firstborn child, divorce,..
I know how much that changes you and how you can never return to being the person you where before that.

In the nineties I was pretty obsessed by him and spent huge amounts of money on concerts and memoribilia.
Now he's like a good friend I've known all my life - when he's in town I'll do my very best to see him, but if I can't because there are other priorities, I quickly get over it because I know there'll be years to come when I can see him again.

In fact, I just can't wait till he's NOT FAMOUS anymore. Then he'll always perform in small venues and after the show he'll come and chat with his elderly fans razz

Actually no. There is a guy that I work with that is a HUGE fan. I can talk about almost any album and he can identify. Anyone that can talk about the embarresment of buying Lovesexy or that Rave could have been marketed better knows what they are talking about.

Then you get those people that say they have been fans from the start (they mean the superbowl) who claim to know all his material. Just bring up something like 'The Truth' or 'The Rainbow Children' and they are silenced.

It is refreshing to meet someone who doesn't give U the whofarted face if U just want to discuss something U heard on the news or the possibility of a show. I had one friend tell me, "It's time to grow up. U're a grown-ass woman!" confused

I love the ones who say they have "all of Prince's albums" and then have no clue what you're talking about! lol

[Sexy note: I'm speaking for/directly quoting my pops, a retired plant operations engineer with a love for all things old school. He's good with the compy, but isn't really a fan of message boards and such. He checks the e mail, checks his bills and stocks, then it's off to Star Trek. cool I am too young to be an older fan yet. I wish I could be...y'all have existed in the blessed "before time"....pre-Te Amo Corazon, pre-3121....and pre MP3s. bow y'all rock the hardest outta all the fans.]

My Papa Ronnie D.W. Wrote:

I find that as I am older, it is indeed harder to be a Prince fan. My daughter has fallen in love with him. I guess I'm passing the torch on to her. I still respect him as an artist; but I just feel a little cheated and indifferent because it has taken him a long time to get back to playing his old songs again. As my daughter will tell you (or has told you); we paid 200 bucks and then some to see him. He played very few of his old songs, and totally ommitted the desired classic; "Purple Rain". That is my favorite album. I know there were LOTS of fans there too expecting it. His (Prince's) change is fine and well. He is getting older and mellowing out. I can understand. I'm 54 myself. I just feel that he should give the fans what they would like to have...and not forget where he came from and who got him there. It's harder because he has changed...and I just can't hang.
