it seems to me that in many photos of his hands his middle 2 fingers are held close together with his pinkie and index finger spread apart. is that my imagination or what? and if not, is it due to playing instruments?

You are not crazy...I have noticed that for years. I think it's just something he does. You know how some people hold their pinkies up when they drink. It's just a Prince thing. But I feel it makes his hands look sexy and elegant! But I have a thing for his hands!

I've noticed this, but I attributed it to Prince's mastery of self-image. I'm sure that, just like anything else in personal image, there's specific ways to present oneself to look one's best. Knowing how much of a perfectionist he is, it's no leap of logic to assume that everything he does in public, especially when cameras are around, has been practiced ad nauseum to ensure it is second nature to him.

I've always thought Prince does that by design -- and if that is the case, he wouldn't be the first.

Fred Astaire used to hold his hands a certain way, especially when dancing, because he felt they looked oddly large on film. Astaire was a fairly small guy -- only wore a 36 jacket. So it's possible his hands were large compared to the rest of his frame.

I noticed the same thing the first time I saw Purple Rain over 20 years ago. It's really noticeable in the scenes where he's wearing the leather gloves. There's something about the way his hands naturally fall where his pinkie falls away or something. Kinda like how folks would say it's something wrong if a man raises his pinkie, but it's not that but it does something different. Regardless he's got the most beautiful hands EVER! Seriously, he is a highly creative person, with a lot of energy. It is natural.

I thought at times I noticed some pigment loss in his hands, but that could be lighting.
