None, but I would have him stay away from Larry Grahm.

Diamonds and Pearls, for me. Apart from "Gett Off", which was great, I don't like the songs, the production, his band, his look (all that yellow - ugh!), "the typhoon", the graphics, or the videos ("Diamonds and Pearls" - neutral )

He reached a crossroads at the beginning of the 90's, and D+P wasn't a path I wanted him to take, personally.

I'd delete Purple Rain.

Hear me out: It's not because I dislike the album (I like it well enough), but because it catapulted him into superstardom. That album--and evenmoreso the title track--is so entrenched in public's association with Prince that it sometime seems both a blessing and a curse. Even Prince has said Purple Rain (the song) is like his albatross.

If this is all speculative, which it is, I think it would be interesting to see how he career developed without the huge success of Purple Rain. ATWIAD was a direct reaction to the sound & success of PR, so without Purple Rain would ATWIAD been the same? Would it have been a hit album?

imo, Prince still would have become a star w/out Purple Rain, but perhaps it would have been a more steady acension instead of meteoric. shrug It's always interesting to me to imagine what results could come from changing just one little thing.

Otherwise, I'd delete Emancipation. I do hate that album musically, but also because it seemed like prince wanted so badly for it to be a huge success but it wasn't. And that, coupled with the name change had the opposite desired effect on his career. If Emancipation would have be bigger/better, then the name change might have seemed not quite so futile.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Its rude, i know, concerning myself as a Prince fan, but in retrospect i would delete all officially released albums between 1996 and 2004.... confused

I mean:

The plastic, Kirky-J produced disasters:
- Emancipation
- New Power Soul
- Rave

The jazz-rock with and without JW-lyrics
- The Rainbow Children
- News

The two contractual releases from this period (Chaos and Disorder, the Vault) i like even more then those albums, and those two contractual albums were, as far as i know, recorded in 1993 - 1995, before it REALLY went downhill.

And, umm, rating Princes career in term of periods:

The disco/pop years: 6,5/10
- For You
- Prince

The reign of the Minneapolis sound: 8/10
- Dirty Mind
- Controversy
- 1999
- Purple Rain

Prince and co unleashing their creativity: 9/10
- Around the world in a day
- Parade
- Sign of the Times
- Lovesexy

The 'where to go with my music and career?' years: 7,5/10
- Batman
- Graffiti Bridge
- Diamonds and Pearls
- The Gold Experience

Contractual freedom, plastic production and image problems: 5,5/10
- Emancipation
- New Power Soul
- Rave

Prince withdrawing, getting even more obscure (musically and lyrically): 4/10
- The Rainbow Children
- News

Slowly coming back in the highlife / to 'normality': 6,5/10
- Musicology
- 3121

What about Come & The Black Album?
