Mavis Staples talks Prince

Humo magazine, may 18, Belgium.

interview excerpt:

...
Prince just kept on going, hours on end, all through the night.
By the time we left the studio it would already be dawn. When i asked
him if he ever slept, he said: 'Mavis, sleeping is a complete waste of time'.
Then I replied: 'Well then with your permission I'm goig to waste at least
eight hours of my time.'

HUMO: When was the last time you saw Prince?
recently at the Superbowl. And before that, in Las Vegas.
If i'm not mistaken it was the 19th of January. He owns a
club and a restaurant, so he invited Yvonne and I. We stayed a
couple of nights. We had a good dinner and saw a brilliant performance
in his beautiful club. Yeah man, Prince is painting Las Vegas purple.

HUMO: Do you think you're ever gonna collaborate again?
(shakes her head) Whenever he's playing in Chicago I sing a few
songs with him. But, cut a record together? I don't think so. He's
a Jehovah's witness now. That makes things difficult. Because I am not
a Jehovah's witness he's not even supposed to hang out with me. They are their
own people. Although, I really wonder if his faith still means that much to him.
Recently, in Vegas, he seemed very much like the old Prince.
...Your coochie gonna swell up and fall apart...

Kind of a bizarre comment if you ask me. It's not like every person around Prince or working with him is a JW; nor have I ever heard it said JWs can only hang out with other JWs. Religion can sure put up barriers but sometimes the barriers are simply imagined.

I gotta question if this is Prince's issue or hers. He doesn't seem to have any problem working with non-JW's.

He wants to sing with freaking Amy Winehouse after all!

Have you heard her new album? It is really "southern protest songs", with a "dirty/gritty funk" instrumentation. Production is the opposite to polished, Ry Cooder on board.

Some really excellent, spine-tangling songs on it.

Anyone else here has heard it?

agreed. prince went to two wendy and lisa largo shows and hung out with them a couple times then performed with him at the brit awards show...if prince had some non-jw issue then obviously those two would be banished for life from him.

maybe mavis was just joking around...who knows but i wonder if prince will want to work with her after her comments. lol

But it is more than possible that Prince may have tried to 'preach' a little bit to Mavis, who may not have been in the mood for it. Wendy and Lisa etc would be used to all that kinda mumbo jumbo by now.

I think it's a great thing that he seemed like the 'old Prince' to Mavis... she was with him at some of the best times (of course not to say W&L weren't...)

I don't think Mavis was saying Prince can't "perform" with non-JW's -- she said a few lines up she performs with him whenever he is in Chicago. Cutting a record is a different story -- I think that requires a lot more time together in a setting that is not a concert stage in front of thousands/hundreds. In that scenario, I can definitely see Prince's religion posing a barrier to them working together -- who knows who he lets into his studio with him

Tamar would be a good example -- who knows if she is a JW or not.

my understanding is that prince is VERY aggressive about converting the people around him - not to a point where they feel afraid for their lives lol , but you know - it's what witnesses do: they WITNESS. it's a super-evangelical religion. and for someone who is already resolute and secure in another faith for many years, i can see how they could feel a little put off by someone coercing them to give it all up and become a JW cuz princey sez so. it's good that he has something to be enthusiastic about, but that kind of zeal has its consequences socially sometimes, as i'm sure he's learned.

Now you got to get rid of you friends if they don't follow the same religon as you. What a shame. eek

Mavis was correct about the date she was in Vegas, 1/19. I posted this in my original report of that night. I'm still kicking myself in the ass....she and her friend walked into the cuisine for dinner right alongside my friend and I- and my idiot self was such a nervous wreck with pre-Prince excitement that I didn't recognize her. boxed
(Of course, I hadn't seen a picture of her in years, and never saw her live.)
The hostess had begun to address us, gave us the chocolate CD's, but then saw her- and turned her attention to them, saying "Mavis?" "so and so, (Lena maybe?, I really don't know), is expecting you, where would you like to sit? Music room?"
Would have thought hearing the name Mavis would have done it for me, right? lol Nope, I was too busy, saying "Music room? We'd like to sit there too!"

So, anyway, the hostess goes off and seats them and comes back for us, seats us a table or 2 away from them. (Hostess had obviously been distracted herself, because she ended up giving us another chocolate CD at the table. ("a gift from Prince" biggrin ) Someone came out the kitchen to speak with Mavis and I heard them tell her whoever was expecting her had gone outside for a cigarette. Shortly thereafter, I noticed she was gone. Didn't think about it again until the show, when I saw her dancing up a storm a few tables away from us in VIP, and in my calmer state, realized who she was.

go ahead, kick me.....duh
Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...music

If this is the correct quote from Prince it is a stupid one.
Sleep is important for your health

http://www.khqa.com/news/...x?id=29937

QUINCY -- We all know we'd be better off if we got eight hours of sleep a night, but most of us don't. We looked at some sleep studies, and found that Americans average just under seven hours of sleep during the week. To find out how sleep is affecting our health, we went to the Blessing Sleep Center.

When you walk into the sleeping bedroom, you may see a room that looks like your typical bedroom. But these bedrooms are part of the Blessing Sleep Center, where they monitor patients' sleep patterns. One way doctors and technicians help their patients is by using cameras and equipment, where they can study the quality of their sleep. So why is sleep so important for us?

"I think sleep is one of the most important facets as far as human beings go--the more important function is for the brain," said Dr. Najappa Somanna, M.D. of Blessing Physician Services.

The Blessing Sleep Center helps patients cope with, if not get over their sleep problems.

"Any physician who thinks a patient may have sleep apnea or a sleep disorder would sent them there for an evaluation," said Dr. Somanna.

Lack of sleep increases your chances of getting sick because it can lower your immune system. It also can be associated with irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. At the Sleep Center, doctors monitor a patient's oxygen level, muscle activity and brain-wave levels. Depending on what the tests show, patients are treated with medication, surgery, or other recommendations to get more rest.
"The No. 1 thing is to get at least seven hours of sleep at night. If you have a chronic sleep deficit, you will do poorly on your exams, you will do poorly on your job. There is no shortcut to that; you have to get your sleep," Dr. Somanna.

If you don't get your seven hours in for a short period of time due to traveling or another reason, don't worry about it; your body can handle it for a short time. Here are some recommendations from the sleep center for a better night's sleep:

*Make sure your bed isn't too lumpy or bumpy.

*Adjust the temperature in your bedroom so you won't get too hot or too cold.

*Wear loose clothing to bed so you'll be comfortable.

*And don't hesitate to talk to your doctor if you have trouble sleeping. The stress of worrying about not sleeping can only make the problem worse. For more information you can also log on to www.americanacademyofsleepmedicine.com or www.sleepfoundation.org

i wasn't even suggesting that JWs or prince are that "insidious" - though if witnessing isn't about conversion (for lack of a better term, i suppose), what is the point of witnessing?

"jehovah is the one true god...like, for what it's worth. actually, ya know what, never mind - forget i said anything. how's your mom?"
