I have to admit that Rave is probably one of my favorite albums.Werever i go what ever i do (the last song) is awesome, i LOVE the greatest romance ever sold, tangerine is fun.I don't care that most people don't agree. There are only maybe two songs that i don't listen to on the album and that is alot for any cd.

yeah, I never really got into that song myself.
Sounds to me that Prince was in one of his "moods" when he wrote it...

There are a lot of great songs on Musicology...

But the progression thru tracks 8-10 is pretty weak, but that's just me.

I might enjoy them more if I had any clue where he was going with them. He's been sending me mixed signals over it.

He blends them together, which tells me that 9 is supposed to continue from 8. But the storylines make no sense together.

Is he storytelling with them? Or are they based on life experiences?

I mean, I think the songs are great, but I don't know where they fit in the whole scheme of things.

I don't think anything (except for track 10) boring on Musicology. It's got so much personality that I blew me away the last time I listened thru it.
I haven't done so in so long... but maybe this week will be the week cuz, according 2 a clip I got out of the newspaper, tomorrow is the 7th anniversy of when Prince took his name back. I figure what better way to celebrate his full freedom?

It's got to "The One" -- very possibly the most underrated song of all time.

I always argue that if this track were included on "Musicology" or "3121" it would have won Grammys.

Yes, both songs are about Prince wanting a girl who is with someone else, and thinking he could be better for her...

The Marrying Kind is written to the guy she is currently with, claiming he will do his best to take the girl's attention :

"Tonight, she's gonna miss U at first
But then she'll get used 2 me
All of the tricks Eye would try
2 make her take this ring and make love 2 me
"

...and If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life is written directly to the girl proclaiming how negative an influence her current man is and how much better he would be :

"If he's with another now U best believe the party's crackin
Ur getting played girl, U better get your mack on
and do onto others as they do onto U
U call me on the day that U and him r just 2 through

If Eye was the man in your life
Eye'd make U happy
Eye'd treat U right
Eye'd buy U flowers every single day
Eye'd Give U power
Eye'd do whatever U say
"

I think the fact that he literally joined the songs together into a 'suite' of sorts is very interesting. Also, as an added dimension it sounds as though the first song is written prior to Prince and the girl hooking up but the second, directly to her, is more vague... it could very well take place in the same time frame OR it could take place after she's moved on to someone else given the line s:

"he don't deserve 2 say that he ever knew Ur name
much less he get 2 smell the perfume Eye gave U
please don't tell me that U all got down
"

I've always wondered if this has something to do with Mayte in some manner given she moved on to another singer after they got divorced:

"Sure U know he got plenty lyrics, yeah, up his sleeve
and after he got what he want he just go up and leave
"

..and this is turning into a rambling dissection. lol

I don't read it that way, personally. I think he uses "lyrics" to denote (no pun intended wink ) lines that have been written and rehearsed ahead of time. He's saying the guy is a player. He knows exactly what he's doing, he's done it before and he'll play by his script again.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Well Theo, I think this would have been easier if you had suggested which albums you feel are the weakest since opinion varies quite a bit on that....that being said here's my twocents

The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale
Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

Agreed - probably the best example of a great Prince song on a weak album (the weakest of them all IMHO).

OK - we should probably redefine "weakest album" - because D&P was one of Prince's most successful albums! Based on purely commercial terms (airplay, tour, sales, singles, videos - this album was huge).

When I think of weakest albums, a few immediately come to mind, such as NPS and C&D (keep in mind that even his weakest albums have their moments of brilliance, which is what this thread is about!)

phew... okay, I'm gonna need to copy/paste this somewhere so I can digest it/look over it more. But thanx 4 the assessment, I really needed it.

its almost as dizzing as me trying to figure out how I truly feel about "Come".

Don't hate it, but not completely crazy about it.
