The first Prince concert I ever attended: august 19th in Rotterdam.
And it’s the best concert I ever saw!

We got a paper just before the concert ... the lyrics of Head were explained in it!
I really didn’t realize the explicitly of the lyrics before:
It felt strange to contribute to this song during the concert.
But I really wish Prince would be this provocative again.

The parade concert will kick the ass of any show today live! back in the day my brother used used to play this concert on video over and over again, i was not a prince fan at the time, and every morning i'd wake up to the blasting sounds of POP LIFE, LIVE DETROIT (THE PARADE,) with my brother dancing in front on the Tv with a knife and a carrot stuck on the end of the knife ( to imitate a microphone) i wanted to rip my hair out i hated prince. Then 1 day after hearing the concert 70 million times i got hooked just like that i was a prince junkie! Ive got the version on DVD now, its still mind blowing! and in my book, the best concert he ever did
smile smile smile smile

Where did you get this DVD????
I cant see it on the net anywhere.

I taped most of that off the TV years ago and it's my favorite period of Prince ever...
On my DVD copy of Under The Cherry Moon is the music video for Anotherloverholeinyohead which I believe is from that same performance...

I would looooove to see that again... My VHS has been swept away in the mists of time...

14th august 1986, wembley arena. incredible.i think it was at these shows that the british music press reailised that behind the tabloid rubbish, here was a talent that only comes along once in a generation, and to their credit for the next few years he was worshipped by the likes of NME and Melody Maker. he got ron wood and sting on stage for "miss you" the rolling stones track, while he did his mick jagger impersination ! (sting and ron looked completely lost onstage!). the revolution were sooo tight as a band.the horn section of eric leeds and atlanta bliss gave it that jazz review feel that is still with him now. prince played guitar only on "head" and "purple rain",beautiful acoustic "sometimes it snows in april" with wendy on guitar, lisa on piano, and prince in chequered full length raincoat with hands in pocket. at one point prince stood atop part of the soundsystem and threw dozens of red roses that were sitting in a giant bucket into the royal box seats. (it emerged years later in a'kiss and tell' interview with a page 3 model called jackie st. clair that she was prince's 'companion' during his stay in london and he was throwing them at her). also noteworthy is that jackie was a girlfriend of simon cowell and remains a friend of his, possibly explaining simon's less than complimentary views on prince?

That was the night I was there ..couldn't rememeber the date

If this is true than you're right that explains the negative comments he has made about Prince

AlfaRomeo

August 18th, Rotterdam
It was pure magic.. The start of the show with smoke coming from underneath the curtains and that haunting flute from ATWIAD and then whan the curtains opened... I've never felt anything like that before at a concert..
When I see the detroit video I still think it's his best life performance

Once, I thought I saw him at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
It turned out to be just some effeminate Puerto Rican dude.

Yeah but he's more than just a quitarist, what about his showmanship, the band, he owned the stage and the crowd (anyway im sure he did play some guitar).

Great thread NWF!
I was only 14 and wouldn't get to see Prince
until Lovesexy, but I sure remember seeing
those awesome live clips in 86 on the
MTV UTCM premier. I totally recorded the
stereo simulcast on to a tape and rocked
that funky shit!
Then a couple of years later a got a videotape
with the 86 Detroit Birthday show on it.
All of that tight shit! Controversy, Mutiny, Automatic,
Head, Life Can Be So Nice!

I LOVE the Parade tour!

& those warm-up shows in Minneapolis & Boston
when they do that Dream Factory shit
& dissin' St. Paul! Oh man, hot shit!
