According to a statement made by Wendy, they did indeed very much help write it but ended up with a composer credit for Computer Blue, instead, which they didn't help with at all. lol

If it's the version where he starts off the final verse and messes up the words, and later says 'Alright, go straight to Bb. No more stops' ...

It's not a '1999 rehearsal' from 1982. It's from a rehearsal in 1983.

I don't know when the recording is from, though I'd guess 1983, BUT Wendy was around during the tour as she was shacking up with Lisa (and it was on this tour that Prince met her).

The 1999 tour carried on into early May of 83. Dez was obviously still there. Wendy knew P a while BEFORE the 1999 ALBUM was released being that Wendy is on backing vocals along with Vanity, Jill and Lisa on the song "Free". Wendy again is on vocals with Lisa on "I. Bitch", b-side. I heard that Wendy met P in his dressing room during a Dirty Mind show in early 81. This is very likely being that this was Lisa first tour with P. Lisa had known Wendy since they were kids. There would have been no way that Lisa wasn't going to introduce Wendy to P early on. Therefore, the whole Melvoin family, if they weren't already hip to P before this, being that P had a bonafide hit with "I Wanna Be Your Lover" they became hip when Lisa tried to get an audition with P once word was out that that Gayle had left. P spent a lot of time visiting Warner Bros at this time, which is located in Burbank, Ca. Lisa snd Wendy both grew up in the valley where Burbank is located. Lisa saw the chance to join P's band which meant that at the very least, she was already aware of Prince and liked him as an artist. Wendy, like Lisa, already being a musician, probably kept a close eye on P's band situation. There is no way Lisa wasn't telling Wendy about things that were going down and things that were ABOUT to go down. Wendy had already been getting prepared and "ready" for the chance to join P's band. She had the inside track. She knew what to expect from Prince, his personality, his moods, his work ethic, shit he didn't like, etc. U know Lisa told Wendy all of this shit well before Wendy ever actually joined the band. As soon as shit got bad with Dez, which was easily around the Controversy tour, Lisa hipped Wendy to it. When did Wendy first appear on a Prince album?....1999. P started recording this album during and after the Controversy tour. Wendy already knew what was going down with Dez cuz Lisa told her.

Yup, that all sounds very logical to me... I've just heard that Prince didn't really become aware of Wendy (or at least her guitar playing) until the 1999 tour. I think it was a W&L interview where that was stated.

I heard that, too. But I believe it was before then. That was a short ass period for Prince to just thrown her in by the First Ave gig in 83. A very short period from April, when the 1999 tour had actually ended. I believe P had been hip to Wendy playing guitar. He at the very least, found out when she was in the studio with him doing the backing vocals to Free. There's no way she's going to go into the studio with him and not mention that she too, is a guitarist.

Wendy just added a new chord to the song that P just happened to dig, so it stayed. I agree with ya about Wendy's lead playing. A lead guitarist, she isn't. I saw P 3 times on the Purple Rain tour alone and every single night that I went, she fucked up the intro and the middle solo to When Doves Cry. Dez's solo to Little Red, is easy, and like u said, she would blow that one as well.

Yes. P took the front part of the first one, the middle of the second and the last part from the third. I'm not sure why P leaked that info since I know P himself does it to his leads. His most well known solo that has been drastically edited and pieced together; Purple Rain. And it needed it to. P noodled around on that solo at First Ave, totally ad libing, with really no direction.

I always find it interesting that this guitar solo is so often found in the top 100 guitar solo lists that come out, and yet that solo was never actually played. Also, I never knew Prince leaked that info - why did he do that? I read about it in Dez' book, though there I recall he said it was a mix of 4 different takes.

Yeah, I found it odd that it's incluses in the top 100 as well. Often cited as played by Prince and not Dez! Don't know what u mean though, Machine, as the solo not actually played. It was actually played 3 or 4 times. Probably more than that. They just took the best parts from 3 or 4 of the best takes.
