I think Purple Rain is a better album, but 1999 may be a better collection of songs.

1999 loses cohesion after Automatic to my ears. Not that the songs get worse, it just doesn't sound like an album anymore. More like he added a bunch of b-sides at the end.

Also the production is better all through Purple Rain. But Purple Rain would not have been what it was without 1999 setting the stage.
