Yeah, he is definitely shutting the mouths of critics in the U.K. Also, based on the success of 3121 in Europe (#1 on the Album chart), it would seem to lend credit to the argument that many fans from outside the U.K. will be in attendance.

Who gives a crap, he's already sold 140,000 so he doesn't need you or your friends!

I must admit, I was not sure that doing 20 nights in a huge venue was a wise move, but he pulled it off. There must be more lurkers on this site than we think.

Yeah, it went to #1 on the European Album Chart. It was on top for one week – a week after its #1 debut in the U.S., I believe. I’ll try to track down the chart site for you. In the meantime, here’s a link to an article about it below. Also, Black Sweat and TAC went top 40 in about 10 or 11 countries in Europe. Maybe this is part of the reason for the U.K. gigs.

Nope, Prince has played Wembley Stadium - I was there too. Not my favourite gig though, or venue. I was on the pitch and the surge forward when he came on was quite scarey.

Was still cool, but I've been to better. There was quite a moment though, when there was a cool guitar solo near the end of the set and before the encore and a shooting star streaked across the open roof of the stadium - a bit hippy, but it was a stellar moment wink

Yep I was at that Stadium gig too. Not his best but the place was packed out. The problem for me at that stage was that this was at the 'is he changing his name or not' stage. I seem to rememeber a lot of "what's my name?" calling from the stage.

He rocked out at the end which was a little too much for some I recall!

For me I much prefered the Apollo ONA gig. Smaller venues suit him best IMHO. I was hoping for him to play at the smaller IndigO2 venue too but it looks like it'll have to be an Arena show if I'm to catch him this time around.

No.,the ticket sales would go through the roof in any country at that price. Come on, when did he ever do something like that in the U.S.? It would be nice, but not likely.

I don't really understand how he got so popular these past few years. He couldn't even sell out the Lovesexy Tour in 1988 but then the Musicology Tour was such a hit when he had been out of the public view for awhile. I guess maybe he actually added some fans of different ages through the years, but it is perplexing.

I am not surprised. It seems to me that his European fans have always been there for him. I think that people in Europe really love music and art and they will support musicians and artists. Prince is a rare blend of creative artist and musician and that enhances is popularity in Europe.
There are a lot of musicians who cannot make it in the States but yet seem to be popular overseas.
I personally know a blues musicians who had a hard time getting gigs here in Cali but when they would go to Europe, it was a different story.

Neither Black Sweat nor Te Amo were big hits im the UK. 3121 went straight in at No 9 and dropped to something like 36 the following week and then down to 50 something the week aftewr. Not a big seller.

The reasons Prince has sold so many tickets is simple. He's playing a string of dates in London, which is fairly (and cheaply) accessible from continental Europe, where he retains a sizeable and loyal fanbase to go with his hardcore UK constituency. The prices are cheap (when most acts of his stature charge three to four times that amount .... for nosebleed seats). And the hype - news items, billboards has helped too.

Plenty of tickets left for every show. Especially those very reasonable VIP ones. Six more dates tba.

Correct, neither the album nor the singles did well in England, which is why I didn't mention the U.K. as one of the countries that those songs went top 40. Should have made that clear. Sorry about that. However, the success of the album and the top 40 single positions in several continental European countries may possibly be one of the reasons for coming to Europe. It sure as heck didn’t hurt the cause. Obviously, accessibility and media attention are definitely other reasons to choose London. This is, after all, most likely a European tour (of sorts), and not only a London performance by Prince.

They're booked, so they will be. In due course. As of this afternoon you could still get Lower Tier seats for the September shows.
