Prince is a good singer, with a great capability to hide his shortcomings.

So people who say he's amazing, your only argument is "because he can hit high notes" ?
Does that make him AMAZING ? Seems like people judge Prince only based on his falsetto. And forget that Prince sings most of the time with his natural voice, and his natural voice is NOT amazing. And if I stay true, his falsetto is pretty much the only thing that makes Prince's voice special. Because his natural voice has absolutly nothing special. Prince's natural voice is average and good at best, he can't go any higher like Stevie Wonder or any deeper like Isaac Hayes. He can't handle long notes and he doesn't have a strong vibrato. From this point of view, I don't see how Prince could be labeled as amazing singer. And I can't even remember one song or one perfomance where he really sounds AMAZING with his natural voice. Amazing falsetto ? definitly. But amazing singer overrall ? no way. There are MANY rnb singers who can sing better and don't even need to hit super high notes to shine. [Edited 6/2/07 14:47pm]

Not overly a fan of his normal voice - a bit too thin for my liking. But, as a whole, it works.

3 to 4 stars depending on the era and song. Better than Good, less than Great.

*****Prince has a good/great voice (definitly not amazing). Prince is a quadruple threat. He has a good strong voice, great composer, great rhythm/dancer and an excellent musician. All things combined make him one of the best entertainers in the business. But to say he has an amazing voice is not entirely true. People like Luther, Rashell Ferrell, Whitney, Jill Scot and Marvin all have amazing voices but they lacke one or more of the other qualities that makes prince who he is.
*****One thing that is remarkable about his voice is the fact that he has an R&B voice, alternative voice, and a rock & roll voice. But to be amazing in the R&B world you have to be able to SANG not SING (if you know what I mean).....and prince can sing [Edited 6/2/07 22:00pm] [Edited 6/2/07 22:03pm]

Sure there are singers that may have a better *tone* to their voice.
But with Prince, it is the emotion generated in his voice. Couple that with his extraordinary range and you have a very unique type of singer. Prince does not just sing a song, he acts it out and puts his heart/soul into it. Selling every note. He is a convincing actor on record. This is what makes his voice so special to me. **** Great. But this is after I heard Wayne Cooper from Cameo sing. And his falsetto was way more amazing than Prince (as well as Philip Bailey's). I'm sorry, he was.
But then again you gotta give props for Prince's vocal versatility. At the very least the man can carry a tune, and that's what it's all about at day's end in Soul music. He can go from falsetto to tenor to baritone to doing all sorts of weird and crazy effects on vocal altering devices. Another thing you gotta give Prince credit for is his multi-tracked vocal harmonies. Since our hero is pretty much a one-man army in the studio, it's great to hear how well he can layer his vocal harmonies together in a song and make it sound beautiful. Listen to "For You" and you'll see what I mean. Another thing is that he's very passionate and soulful when he sings. Whether he's singing a soulful ballad, or a hard-rockin' song, or a light pop song, or a nasty-ass funk track, the man can make you believe the words he's singing. And it's not even just limited to the lyrics. The interjections ("Whoo!" and "Owwwa!") add more depth and creativity to his sound. Now that's talent. I would kill to have a voice like Prince.
