I watched the Parade tour before creating this thread, and while watching the Parade tour, it reminded me the reasons why I wasn't really convinced by Prince back in the 80's. In fact I didn't see him as a GREAT singer, and still don't. And I judge Prince as an rnb artist. I only started to take him serioulsy when I discovered his early albums when he used to sing mainly with his falsetto. Prince has an amazing range and his voice is exceptionally versatile. True his natural voice may be a bit flat, but his expression more than makes up for it. It's another instrument he knows how to use to its' absolute maximum.
For sure Prince can sing, but saying that Prince's got an amazing voice is like putting Prince in the same category as Marvin Gaye. 
To me he may sound amazing sometimes and not that great at all other times. Prince got some strength (his falsetto) and some weakness (his natural voice)...That's why I vote *** and half. I think Prince voice is unique in the sense that his natural voice doesn't sound like a true soul singer. [Edited 5/16/07 18:40pm] | |

ooo... good question.
He doesn't have the greatest voice in the world. I mean, his voice is not extraordinary in comparison to someone like Josh Groban, sure... But the truth is that he's got probably the best range I've heard of any male singer I've heard. He can pull off a high falsetto (Kiss & Black Sweat) and his voice can go really low (Solo is the only one that comes 2 mind). That alone makes his voice amazing. One of the quotes here says it all "I don't think I'm the best. I simply like my voice." - Prince With all the things he can do with it, I give it ***** No one else's voice can make me feel so many things at once... he has an incredible talent. He's not the very best singer in the world, but I still think highly of his voice. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone | |

I think Prince's range and vocal variety is great and I like the fact that he doesn't feel the need to shriek most of the time to prove his vocal range like many 'soul' singers these days. Don't get me wrong - I love a good Prince scream as much as anybody but it is usually well placed and heart-felt. Btw, did anybody else notice a big improvement in Prince's vocals around the 1999 period or is it all the layering and effects he used? | |

Amazing singer with amazing range... and I really like his voice...
Even if he was only an average singer, I'd definitely prefer listening to Prince over other singers... too many great singers that just all sound the same to me... | |

Prince is beyond amazing. He has range that most artist don't have. Most male singers don't have his range just mostly the females. That's why so many female singers love doing Prince songs because they can pull it through more. So your answer top this question would be amazing and beyond*****. Peace and be wild! | |

If you seen him perform the "Beautiful Ones" live at the 2004 Musicology concert in L.A. shit you would say amazing also! The way he was hitting them high notes had me hitting high notes if you know what I'm saying. surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
