Well, 1st of all, welcome aboard. It's always cool 2 hear from new FAMS. I honestly recommend u get ALL of his albums if u really want 2 get 2 know his music. Rainbow Children is unlike any album he's ever done if u ask me, so I'm not going 2 try and compare it 2 SOTT or any other album 4 that matter. I personally don't think all that much of SOTT either, but it certainly doesn't suck. As 4 The Rainbow Children, it's not his best album in my opinion, but it's still worth it. Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

I like SOTT, but I don't think it's his best album like many here do. Personally, I say get TRC. It's not a direction he's gone into before. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

You should probably just save up for The Hits/The B-Sides and Cystal Ball (you might find it cheap used, I've seen it priced like it's a two-disc set).
Considering that you don't already have Lovesexy and The Vault: OF4S, it might be a little weird for you, but it's definitely nothing like SOTT.

I think you'll dig the Rainbow Children given the music you already like. You may find the lyrics difficult to vibe with but the music is some of the best he has recorded in a very long while.
If you like R n B, you will love Emancipation.

Sounds like you dig his more commercial efforts. You may want to pass on TRC and hunt down some of his 12" stuff and b-sides to satisfy your fix.

YES! Buy it NOW!!! | |

Foxylee...I've been reading your posts elsewhere (and welcome to the site, btw!)...I agree with those who have recommended Emancipation for you. I think that's the album you'll get the most enjoyment out of based on what you seem to dig.
As for TRC, if you like his fast commercial sounding stuff, I certainly wouldn't guarantee that you'll like TRC. The first track is a somewhere-near 10 minute jazzy, mostly instrumental track with a chorus and spoken lyrics, and there are a lot of tracks that I would label as "segues." I can't think of one song off TRC that would "fit" on the albums that you mentioned you have and like. Personally, I love TRC, but I also love Sign O The Times, which you didn't like. If you're going to spend the $$ for the concert, I'd buy TRC just so you'll recognize more songs. After you spend $100 for a ticket, what's another $14 for the CD? Plus, after you see the concert, you'll like TRC more. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

I don't understand how you can hate SOTT, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. lol
Based on the albums you do like, you should probably get Emancipation and The Hits set and forget about TRC. I swore I would not buy TRC, but of course, I did anyway. I can only stand to listen to about 4 songs on it, but I am still glad I have it. You would probably dig The Vault, too.

It depends really. If all you enjoy is his "commercial" sounding music then it might not be the album for you.
What I find most satisfying about TRC is that it is his most "demanding" album to listen to. It definitely is not music you would put on in the background of a happening party. However, in my opinion, Prince acomplished with TRC what he tried to do with Lovesexy. That is make a album that was challenging to listen to musically with a very strong message behind the music and not bury all of it in unnecessary overproduction (you have to admit, if there was ever a Prince album that is guilty of overproduction Lovesexy was certainly it). If you wish to hear Prince push himself musically in a different direction, however, The Rainbow Children would make for a necessary purchase. Who's the private d*ck that's a sex machine to all the chicks?
Who's the man that would risk his neck for his brother man? Who's the cat who won't cop out when there's danger all about? John Shaft ... Damn Right!

Foxy, based on the music you already like, I would highly recommend The Gold Experience, Emancipation, and maybe even New Power Soul. However, there is no guarantee with Prince. He's an eclectic artist who tries many different things, and I would suggest to just try and do some homework (download some mp3s, that kind of thing) before you make any quick decisions. In my experience, you can't go wrong with much of what you get from Prince because even if at first you don't like it, the shit just has a way of really growing on you until you end up loving it!

WOW! A NEW Prince fan/fam.
Welcome abord! U have 2 get TRC. It is by far THE best Prince album in years. If you can get past the prechyness of it, you should be able to take it for what's it's worth. GOLD! MJ 'nuff said. "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.
RIAA 'nuff said. | |

from what youve said
next on your list should be...t h e g o l d e x p e r i e n c e I love 1.Symbol (fav album)5/5 TRUST ME GET THE GOLD EXPERIENCE Rainbow Children should be bought before you go 2 the gig. Sign 'o' the Times took the longest time for me 2 get into. I never liked it but it grows on you... The more Prince music you get the more you start to discover the Prince music you bought already. Is God the same word as Prince (I'm starting 2 get confused) "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"

Thats 3 c.d's for £5 It is worth getting 4 that price but otherwise the weakest of all Prince albums get the gold experience "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"
