OMG no fucking way is he anywhere near ANY of master classical composers.

But, in a hundred years from now, who knows what they're going to be listening to, and what they will consider as noteworthy.

hmm

he may been seen as great for this time period but not compared to the likes of Mozart.

Miles

Until Prince masters extended musical forms, such as the symphony, and sonata form, which would mean doing deep theory learning (not saying he should), any comparison between Prince and Mozart is limited only to comparing their short-form songs.

Mozart was also a multi-instrumentalist, as he was a keyboard virtuoso and also respectable on the violin, as well as (I believe) being able to sing, which he seldom did in public.

Imo, while brilliant, P is no better than Stevie Wonder at his best, in terms of musical sophistication, and has yet to reach the greatness of someone like Duke Ellington, a self-taught blues/ jazz/ pop/ classical influenced composer, who was a great songwriter (musically, not lyrics), composer and bandleader, who went some way towards mastering extended form in his later multi-part suites.

Perhaps a better comparison would be to ask - Is Prince the new Ellington, as Miles Davis said he could be if he kept going as he did in the '80s. smile

Finally! A great OBJECTIVE response. Thank u headbang

I've noticed that the most rational responses usually come from actual musicians or lovers of music, not just Prince.

I don't know, Rock and roll gets no real respect in terms of a technical art but it can get really sophisticated and dense, that is one of the things that some people look at in classical. I don't, the simpler the better, Beethovens fifth, the main part, was simple. the rest is window dressing. In terms of could prince move me, (the only person i really care about being moved) he does it more than most of the classical composers and more than most of the rockers too, so if that means he's a great composer to me then the answer is yes. People don't realize how hard it is to craft and produce music. He makes it look easy but it's not. I doubt if the great composers could do any better.
